[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report
Good Evening, Both bands were stronger than they were two weeks ago. Less QSB on twenty while on forty meters had less on those farther west with a fast flutter on those to the east. The sun angle seems about right for longer distance work on forty. By the end of the second net it was dark here. Topics ranged from tuning vertical antennas to humans being launched into space, Boise real estate to Midwestern snow storms. Low noise helped me dig a little deeper to work PA and VA. It has been a while. On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z: W0CZ - Ken - ND K0DTJ - Brian - CA K6XK - Roy - IA NO8V - John - MI K2HYD - Ray - VA KB3FBR - Joe - PA On 7047.5 kHz at 0045z: W0CZ - Ken - ND W6JHB - Jim - CA K4WJ - John - FL K6PJV - Dale - CA K0DTJ - Brian - CA W8OV - Dave - TX I am working on some code to visualize antenna radiation patterns as animated 3D surfaces. This is an extension of work I did for my grad school thesis. There are many variables I could modify as user controlled parameters; I need to pick those which effect the system the most or are the most important to amateur use, while setting the others as fixed. These patterns are created from equations straight out of a text book so you can track how each variable is introduced into the theory. I need to tune my dynamic-circular queue for steady state performance. The display loop needs to get fed enough frames, quickly enough, or have a governor added to it. Until next week have fun and get on the air more, the bands are healthy, Kevin. [Elecraft] Rx QTC issue
I am able to send QTC fine. Both times receiving QTCs in WAE I can click on the header and it populates but no QTCs populate the individual QTC blocks. When clicking on a QTC it tells mwe format is incorrect. I have the original QSOs for each QTC block so I can find where to add them for the appropriate calls. I did a screen copy of the info so I have the QTC info. Can this info be entered manually into the QTC window and have it enter the log, which doesn't seem to work unless it's me. Any ideas to get these Rcv QTCs into the log? Re: [Elecraft] KPA 1500 efficiency
This is normal from theory. Input power increase as I*U. Output power increases as I*I*R. So at half input power one quarter output power. At 1/4 input power 1/16 output power. Two ways around, none implemented in KPA1500. Change transformer windings like in KX3, which is harder to do at high power. Lower the voltage as in Expert amps. In old times, my 20A power supply to a 100W rig broke. I only had 5 A supply. Was good for 5W. But after adjusting with tuner for a max power, the output was 25 W. The tuner acted like a transformer. Yes. This can be done even with a basic K4, since it has independent left and right receive channels pertaining to VFO A (main) and B (sub). A K4D would give you the ability to use different antennas for the two receivers. It also optimizes performance when the two receivers are on different bands since it includes a second set of band-pass filters, preamps, and attenuators. [Elecraft] Solution to Low Volume on Right Side using Sub receive on KX3
The SUB receive on the KX3 is great for working pile-ups. The issue I have is when the DX station is weak, turning up the audio volume to hear the DX makes the pile-up so loud I can't hear the DX. [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU band/bin operation
Hi Gary, I have two large vertical loops for 160 - 40 M each is directional NE/SW & NW/SE. As long as each antenna presents a fairly low SWR to the tuner, you will be ok. If, say, both antennas are at or below 3:1 SWR when tuner is bypassed, at a particular frequency, you should be ok switching from one to the other while un-keyed & then keying up full power at the new ant setting. I train the tuner for each antenna separately after erasing any settings for that band. Then I only have two choices for the tuner to make. Even then, you may get a fault response if you tune to a freq where one antenna is way above 3:1 & the other is not and you key full power - I usually apply 'tune' power after a change of antennas & it seems to be ok. The tuner will match almost anything below 10:1 or so but you can't run full power with the higher SWR's. 160M is real picky above 4:1, 80-6M will still allow about 750W at 10:1. Take a look at the user manual on the Elecraft site for better info. It is the best amp I have used but you have to get familiar with it's limitations. [Elecraft] K3, WSJT-X and Mint 20
My K3 is not my main rig I use for FT8/FT4 but I did have it set up and working fine with WSJT-X with Linux Mint 19.3. I use another rig that is pretty mediocre on CW but not bad on SSB and digital for most of my FT8/FT4 work. I recently did a fresh install of Mint 20 64 bit (attempts at a straight upgrade failed) and have not been able to get WSJT-X working with the K3. The other rig, yes but not the K3. The setup is an old Dell Optiplex 380 desktop, CAT through an RS232 cable and the two cables from the computer to the K3 line in and out jacks. I use PulseAudio. CAT works fine an I am able to receive signals but not well and little shows up on the waterfall. The rig will go into transmit but no power out. I am using the same settings in Pulse that I used before. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU band/bin operation
Gary: If the Xcvr provides freq info (a K3 menu enable is required), the KPA1500 selects new ATU settings as the K3 Tx VFO changes (a bit after VFO motion ceases), without waiting for a transmission. The KPA1500 chooses the most recently stored ATU setting in the new “bin”. On transmission, if SWR exceeds a threshold, and a KPA1500 config choice for HiSWR retune is enabled, other ATU settings in the bin are evaluated. This requires a bit of RF. Once the best ATU setting is found, the bin is reordered and stored, so when you return to this frequency, the most recent setting is tried first. If you mostly use your three antennas on the obvious bands, there should be one or two ATU settings per bin. If you train your 80 meter dipole on 20 and your 40 meter beam on 15, there may be more ATU settings per bin. I’d consider putting the HyTower on the second ant port so that it can be used on all bands without having to search thru settings for the “other” antenna. If there are any ATU settings in the bin, only those settings will be tried, so tune in every bin if you have multiple antennas. It takes on the the order of 20 milliseconds of stable RF per ATU setting, which has to do with relay settle delay and reevaluating SWR. A CW dit at 30 WPM is 40 mSec. ATU relays are changed after bypassing the PA momentarily, and that also takes a few mSec. 73 de Dick, K6KR > On Nov 15, 2020, at 08:51, Gary Slagel via Elecraft > wrote: > > I'm thinking of replacing an old SPE amp with a KPA1500. > I have 4 antennas: 10/15/20 yagi, 40M yagi, 80/160 dipole and an all band > hytower vertical so will probably have 3 switched antennas to one antenna > port on the KPA1500 and 1 antenna to the 2nd antenna port. > After 'training' on all freq/antenna combinations I'll tend to have 2 or 3 > settings for each freq/bin. [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU band/bin operation
I'm thinking of replacing an old SPE amp with a KPA1500. I have 4 antennas: 10/15/20 yagi, 40M yagi, 80/160 dipole and an all band hytower vertical so will probably have 3 switched antennas to one antenna port on the KPA1500 and 1 antenna to the 2nd antenna port. After 'training' on all freq/antenna combinations I'll tend to have 2 or 3 settings for each freq/bin. When I tune from one frequency to the next and one bin to the next bin, the tuner will have to select one of the 2 or 3 settings for the bin. Does it wait until I transmit (a dit with the key) to select the new setting or will it track with the k3 and make changes as I move from freq to freq. Will I notice the tuner trying each setting (lights flashing, relay noise) until it finds the correct setting? My older SPE has a similar freq/bin concept but has 4 antenna ports and 1 set of band/bins per antenna port. This allows it to know exactly setting to use which is nice. But... maybe not as durable as the KPA1500. Thanks for any advice. [Elecraft] KX3 Calibration Question
After several years use I decided to check the calibration of my KX3, following the procedures in the manual, using a function generator controlled by a GPS disciplined reference signal, adjusting REF CAL to zero beat. Then I checked WWV 10MHz I was about 230 Hz off frequency based on PX3 display. Looking at the 10MHz signal from the function generator, I was off by the same amount based on PX3. I adjusted the REF CAL setting to get both the 10MHz WWV and Function Gen 10MHz centered on the PX3 (same REF CAL setting). I checked with my old HP8640B at 10MHz, it was within 20Hz. With WWV I could see both the center and side bands, I was using the center as my reference. The manual states that following it's procedures accuracy should be within +/- 1 ppm.
