Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 drops out during voice peaks

2022-02-03 Thread hawley, charles j jr
No, it’s always been on manual since I got it. And it never used to do this.
Nothing is changed in the shack except in using a 4:1 balun instead of a 1:1.
The timing is similar.
Tomorrow I’ll reinstall that and see if it persists.
An arc outside is a thought too. I will check my open wire feed line as well.
Thanks for the replies.

2022-02-03 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
It sounds like you may have the KAT500 set for AUTO. Change it to MAN and it
should perform much better.

The rapid signal changes associated with SSB operation can cause issues with
the sampling of the power in the directional coupler,
causing readings that make the KAT think it needs to do a tune. By using MAN
mode you get to decide when a tune is needed,
making everyone much happier.

Something arcing over on voice peaks would do what you describe. Are
there any weak insulators or spots where something might arc?

It might help if we knew more about the antenna system; what antenna,
balun, power rating of them vs. power running, RF feed back in shack,
any other info might help us point at what to look at...

I used to have some similar events, and got rid of them with a
combination of toroids and current chokes in feed line; was suffering
too much RF in shack, and this fixed it for me.

Re: [Elecraft] My poor K3

2022-02-03 Thread Robie Elms
Ronnie,

Two thoughts:

1. What is your power supply output voltage with the K3 transmitting. This
measurement should be made at the K3. It should be approximately 13 volts.

2. Try transmitting into a 50 ohm dummy load vs. your antenna. Is there
any difference?

3. Repeat 1 with the K3 connected to the dummy load.

These measurements may help you identify if you have a problem with the K3,
your antenna or your power supply + cabling from the power supply to the K3.

I had the same issues. The interconnects supplied with the P3s I had were
poor. I finally cut every one in half and filed in the circular file. Made my
own with some DS-RG316 and quality 50 Ohm BNC new old stock. No more
interconnect issues….

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 RF Board

2022-02-03 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Lance,

The new RF board (revision F4) was phased into production around May of 2017.
Here are the benefits:

- slower temperature gradient and less T/R offset effect (both due to moving
the Si570 away from the TX stages)

- improved rejection of out of band QRM on 17/15/12/10 meters (new band-pass
filters)

However, I can't say for certain that this is adequate for use with Q65 mode.

In at least two cases that I know of, KX3 owners upgraded from the earlier RF
board specifically to take advantage of the improved frequency stability. As
you can imagine, this is not an inexpensive proposition. But if you're
interested, feel free to contact sales.

Wayne
