It is all about the size - I just want it for the desktop convenience at

There is a lot of mention regarding common mode chokes, RF grounding,
copper to aluminum connections, etc. Speaking only of my station, I
experienced no similar automatic tuner problems with equipment other
than the KAT500. I suspect other ops have similar experiences.

It works I am very pleased with these betawares. I gave my station
a real workout on 40 and 75 today and there was not a single glitch.

I have had time to review the other offerings mentioned.
Actually, I believe the yet to be released small external control panel
for the K3 may be just the ticket. In the interim, I will chase the mouse.

Last really quiet production rig I used was a TenTec Corsair - fully
analog. I should have never sold it - best 160 rig I ever had. Dead
quiet winter bands and signals would just jump out at you - sort of like
a signal breaking squelch on FM.

Thank you very much for making those tests. They saved me the
frustration of purchasing the new version of HRD, that would not have
improved my operation.
I only use HRD for rig control, so my best bet now is to keep using the
5.xx version that I already have set up.

Do you have the Auto-Notch filter on when this happens? If you do, try
adjusting the AGC SLP down to about 6.
I have found that using a setting higher up results in a very annoying
warble effect.

I just noticed that when the Manual NTCH is engaged and the frequency of
the notch is set using VFO B - the main VFO is locked. You cannot change
frequency with VFO A, however the frequency can be controlled via HRD.
This lock can be toggled off by pressing the A/B button.
Is this a feature?
I still buy the parts and put my own computers together - hence, any new
computer I have is equipped with real serial ports. I get the cards from
either Tiger Direct or one of the other parts suppliers that proliferate
on the Internet. They are cheap and plug right into the motherboard. A
Been there and done that with Linux. Of the latest distros
(distributions or versions), Mint is the best I have found. That said,
it is the number of distributions that is keeping Linux from becoming
accepted as an operating system for everyone. Too many choices is
somewhat like too many cooks

Thank you Fred K6DGW - you are correct - I was referring to phase noise
on RX.
So far as noise from XMIT on other rigs, I have no experience. I live in
a rural area and have an extremely low ambient noise level. A noisy RX
exposes itself immediately.

people jump on one number to rate (rank) equipment and totally disregard
things like ergonomics (If they didn't the K3 would be at the bottom of
the list).
What is so bad about how the K3 is designed (ergonomics)? This is

Sounds like a mechanical issue to me. That would mean a loose connector,
loose wire inside of a connector, or a cold solder joint.
To start trouble shooting, you will need:
1. A small non-conductive probe - part of an old pen case will do well

Get the monitor bottom edge down to desktop level. I used to have my
monitors about 10 inches above the desk with the rigs beneath them. The
result was looking up at them. Do NOT look up at monitors - it will
screw your neck up after a while. Also, I have specially cut glasses for
my radio
Get a static protection mat and ground yourself - this will protect
sensitive parts.
Use an egg carton for separation of the hardware.
Read each step twice, then proceed. Don't tighten anything until
instructed to do so.

Exactly! The K-Line amounts to a fully automated (no tuning or knob
twisting) 500 Watt HF station. Last time I saw that was a Halicrafters
Tornado.
I changed my entire radio desk to create more storage and shelves from
the space formerly used by a large tube amp and the large tuner I used

I am still running an old 5.xx version that only partially support the
K3. When/if HRD fully supports thatK3 I will immediately purchase an

I use a 260 foot doublet fed with 600 ohm tuned feeder (4 spacing #14
wire). It is run as an NVIS antenna - up 26 feet and flat. The K3
auto-tuner and the KAT500 both tune it very well for 160/80/40/30
meters. I do not use it on the upper bands. The feedline is about 25
feet long and is
