[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 support
Dear Elecraft Friends, Up through last weekend I had been operating my K3 #820 with MCU 4.31 and DSP 2.72, firmware that dated from March 2011. I was content with my K3’s performance, and saw no reason to upgrade. But Reflector reports praising recent improvements in NR and NB operation finally persuaded me that I should update my K3. Accordingly, last Monday I downloaded the latest Mac K3 Utility and began the upgrade. All went well until the Utility tried to install the DSP files, at which point my K3 choked and everything stopped. I suddenly had a non-working radio and was at an impasse. I contacted Elecraft support and soon heard from Gary Surrency. Gary, in turn, passed my message on to David Fleming, who has full responsibility for the Mac K3 Utility. David was solicitous and extremely helpful. He pointed out that my ancient Mac Powerbook computer with OS 10.4.11 is too long in the tooth to run the current Mac K3 Utility, and he kindly sent me the latest version that my computer would tolerate. Following his very specific instructions, I used that older Utility to successfully install all of the new firmware files. My K3 now is back in operation with the latest firmware. David went far beyond the call of duty to help me solve my problem. In fact, he sent his last e-mail message to me last evening at 10:40 p.m. (we both are on EDT). I consider his dedication typical of what we all have come to expect from Elecraft support. Thank you David, and thank you Elecraft. 73, John, no8v __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT: WWV-driven station clock that displays zulu time
Hi Brian, A Heathkit GC-1000 atomic clock (if you can find one) can be DC powered. 73, John, no9v -What I would love to see (I've searched and searched to no avail) is an atomic clock with a nice LED display that is DC powered. LED so it can been seen at night (or during a power outage), unlike most LCD clocks which have a momentary backlight feature. DC powered so it can run off of battery power or a shack DC power supply. The closest I found was a called a Dakar Rally Clock which is a LED DC-powered clock that mounts on the dash of offroad racing trucks. No atomic sync feature, though. Perhaps a future Elecraft product? 73 N5BCN - Brian __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] OT: Quiet 12V-to-5V converter
Dear Elecraft list members, The recent thread on noisy switching power supplies leads me to a related question. My son n8fyk, who teaches radio astronomy, has set up a project with his students. They are using a 15m direct-conversion Radio Jove receiver in the field to monitor radio emissions from Jupiter, the sun, and the galaxy. The receiver operates from 12V, which is readily supplied by a portable utility 12V battery pack. Their problem is powering their data recorder, which needs about 5V at 0.7A. The data recorder is designed to operate from three internal AA alkaline cells, but these give a limited run time. My son would like to be able to leave the receiver and recorder for unattended operation for several days at a time. One solution would be to use a 12V-to-5V power converter between the 12V battery and the data recorder. For long battery life, it would be nice to have the efficiency of a switching converter. Such a converter would have to be RF-quiet, so as not to interfere with their weak-signal reception. I will be interested to hear what list members recommend. Thank you and 73, John, no8v __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT: Quiet 12V-to-5V converter
Thanks to all who responded to my query. At this point I plan to follow Jack Smith's excellent recommendation to build a DC-to-DC converter based on the LM-2591 chip and do my best with appropriate filtering to keep RFI from getting out of the box. I appreciate having the excellent resources of the Elecraft reflector to draw upon for solving this type of problem. 73, John, no8v __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Kevin, Jean and I had been in Kalamazoo and returned to Alma too late for me to check in to ECN/20. I tried for ECN/40 and think I heard you announce the net, but you were so buried in QRN that I could judge it was you only by the rhythm of your sending. [Elecraft] Jade Products battery charger
I have a Jade Products battery charger, originally purchased as a kit and built about 1999. The design uses a UC3906 three-state charger IC, which was very much in vogue at the time. A label on the charger indicates that the company was located in E. Hamstead, NH. I believe the designer and company owner was a ham. Hi Robert, Your proposed speaker looks interesting. Thank you for offering it. My need is a little different. I want to use a KX2 for portable emergency communication, powering it directly from a 12V lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. For this application I would like to power an external amplified speaker directly from the same 12V LFP battery. I would be rather not have to recharge an amplified speaker's internal battery. 73, John, no8v From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.neton behalf of Robert J. Morris Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2018 1:06:25 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker I've built a prototype powered external speaker for the KX3, and would like some feedback on what folks would desire in terms of features, and whether folks would want to own one. The speaker currently is designed to match the overall look of the KX3 and PX3, and accept similar third-party panels and covers as for the KX line. Presently, it uses the same legs and feet as the KX3 and PX3, and is the same height and depth as those. There is one USB port for charging the internal lithium battery, and input and output stereo jacks. The speaker is mono. The output jack redirects the right channel from the stereo input for a second speaker, just like with the Elecraft SP3 and other similar external speakers. The speaker is amplified. The SPX3 puts out a maximum of 3W, and is about as loud as any external radio speaker gets. Volume is adjusted by the KX3. It plugs into the KX3 PHONES jack. There is a built-in low pass filter to reduce noise and improve the listening experience. The prototype, as you'll see in pictures in the links below, is slightly narrower than the expected finished product. The speaker driver and on/off switch are both waterproof, but - just like the KX3 and PX3 - the case isn't. So, don't drop it in a lake. It will handle all conditions appropriate for the KX3, and is meant for indoor and outdoor use. Having matched the case design so closely to the KX3, it isn't as airtight as I'd like it, so the next prototype will have the case halves join in a more customary way, but remain the same dimensions and overall look. This will also improve ingress protection. You'll see the speaker is not a polished finished product yet, as it's a rough first prototype made by hand. Your feedback will assure the final product is what you want gracing your portable shack. Please note, the KX3 in the photo is only to demonstrate the speaker. All feedback is welcome. Please let me know which reasonable enhancements or simplifications you'd like to see. Examples: * Would you want an output USB port to use the speaker to charge your phone? * Would you want to dispense with the built-in battery, and run it entirely from external power? * Would you want a second passive speaker driven by the first to save on weight and cost? That is, a SPX3A (active, with battery, charger, and amp) and SPX3P (passive, with only speaker driver) * If you're a KX2 user, would you like me to produce the SPX2 (also in development)? Hi Bill, Thank you for your query. My K3 has the 400 Hz CW roofing filter. Because of currently challenging conditions, I usually set my K3’s width control to 25 Hz. My preferred audio frequency is 600 Hz. Those were my K3’s settings when I tried to check into the Elecraft CW net last evening. I engaged the APF after nothing else worked. Following N6KR’s recommendation, I used fine tuning (1-Hz steps). I tuned around slowly near the expected net frequency of 14.050 MHz and suddenly heard net control Kevin KD5ONS calling at 14.05045 MHz. I recognized Kevin, as I often do, by the rhythm of his sending. He was loud! When I turned off the APF, he vanished. I believe that tuning slowly in 1-Hz steps is the secret to making the APF work. I hope this helps. 73, John, no8v From: William Hammond Sent: Monday, June 22, 2020 12:55 PM To: John Gibson Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio Peaking Filter Hi John, that is fantastic!! I have never experienced anything near what you describe with a K3s or my original updated K3 SN 00069. I find that a very narrow 200 hz CW filter works best for me in those conditions you so apply described. Tell me more, do you open up the filters to kHz? Please describe how you set this please. I have tried all prescriptions I have read on this reflector and had no joy with any of them..perhaps I need some schooling? 73, Bill-AK5X > On Jun 22, 2020, at 11:27 AM, John Gibson wrote: > > Each Sunday evening, I use my K3 #820 to try to check into Kevin’s 20m > Elecraft CW net. [Elecraft] K3 Audio Peaking Filter
Each Sunday evening, I use my K3 #820 to try to check into Kevin’s 20m Elecraft CW net. Kevin in Oregon is almost 1900 miles from me in Michigan, and I succeed only because I have a modest tri-band beam antenna at 60 ft. Current propagation conditions make this especially challenging. Sometimes Kevin is so buried in noise that I find him only because I can recognize the rhythm of his sending. Last evening, conditions were poor. I tuned all around the net frequency and could hear nothing of Kevin. Then I turned on my K3's Audio Peaking Filter (APF), searched again, and found him, and he was loud! When I turned off the APF, he vanished. I did check into the net. My K3's APF made all the difference between hearing Kevin and not finding him. I am impressed that it worked so well. I thank Wayne N6KR for creating this feature for the K3. 73, John, no8v __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
