[Elecraft] K3 utility

2023-02-10 Thread Dean L
It's been a long time since I used the utility, and seem to be having a
brain cramp. I'm unable to figure out how to download my current settings.
I have done it before on another computer that died, and can't seem to do
it with the new setup. I see where I can upload current firmware, etc but
not backup or change things like the welcome screen etc.

Almost thing my utility might be corrupt?

It is communicating with the K3, which has db9 serial.
Thanks in advance 73

Interesting.
How would you measure the impedance the sdr rx or even the K3, for that
matter adds to the circuit?
I often wondered this when tuning a bandpass filter, to work with a
receiver, using a return loss bridge, how can you be sure the rx is
50ohm...?

Re: [Elecraft] Gurus

2021-06-10 Thread Dean L
After watching the video of the TinySA next to the HP8921, I can't see how
you could EVER trust the results of the toy.
I watched as OM in the video was scratching his head wondering where the
artifacts on the display of the TinySA came from.
Did I watch the wrong video? If I didn't see the image captured by the HP,
I would have comd to different conclusions.

I was not impressed:
Same author different video,

https://youtu.be/uwXUZSdxNq4

As he changed the amplitude the harmonics generated by the TinySA changed
accordingly making the signal look "dirty"
Great tool if you have a $10k Service monitor sitting right next to it...

I understand it's $100 gizmo, but might confuse an unsuspecting operator.

[Elecraft] OT: Thoughts on MFJ-1026 or any other phasing box

2021-01-07 Thread Dean L
I have horrible noise ( assumedly from my neighbors) that i cant seem to
kick on my K3 and kx3. The NB and NR dont touch it.
Ive been watching youtube videos on this magic little box from MFJ that
seems to do wonders on my type of noise.

Has anyone a MFJ-1026 they no longer need?
Any thoughts on this unit?

Thanks for the bandwidth and 73

Does anyone have info about remote control of KX3/KX2?
I'm interested also...

We all have similar stories, sad part is, there are extra class licensees
that dont know any more about oscillators than ohms law or caculating the
length of a half wave dipole.

The ones to "tell the tell" ain't gonna be around forever, few of us left,

Not exactly. The FCC started the Alternate Broadcast Inspection
Program (ABIT) about the time that I retired from the FCC. in the mid
1990s when there was a push to privatize Federal agency obligations to
some extent. The FCC did it for broadcast station inspections, ship
station safety inspections, and resolution of harmful interference.

ABIT is a voluntary program under the management of the various state
broadcasters' associations that contract with individuals to make
compliance inspections of broadcast stations. The station pays the
association a fixed fee, and the association pays the inspector. I
contracted with the California association from 1996 until 1999 and
traveled all over the state.

Notification of passing an ABIT inspection was sent to the FCC but
failures were not so reported. I don't know if that is still done.
Such passing was regarded as "insulation" from FCC inspection for three
years but the FCC still has the obligation to inspect broadcast stations
both on a random basis for compliance with specific programs such as
tower lighting and EAS compliance or if a complaint has been filed that
bears on rule compliance, technical and otherwise. --

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Field Day report

2019-06-24 Thread Dean L
Great update Wayne

Well it's all relative.
Saturday, I got to FD, 2.5 hours from home, to a sister Clubs operation,
they invited me to come down and work some cw.
When I arrived, they were running an American rig (not Elecraft) on CW
station, I operated it for a few hours.

I asked if they minded if I ran my own radio, which was no problem.

I'm sure glad I brought my pelican case, with my trusty "old" k3 and p3,
no "s", no updates, no narrow filters, no nuttin!

It was like going from an HW-7 to a K2...

Sorry, but I'm ruined.

Have Elecraft, will travel.

I won't be moving to a k4... No need.

 I'm happy.

Re: [Elecraft] Equipment Storage and operation

2018-07-05 Thread Dean L
I'm gonna jump on this before Eric pulls the plug and takes US to the
woodshed.

I have had a rig(s) of some sort in my vehicles over the past 38 years
driving, in the central Adirondack mts of NY.
Today I used a laser thermometer it was 145 on my dash.
I have a pic of my car thermometer last February it was minus 40f.

If anyone wants to see pix email me offline.

I ran all day FYBO contest at -17f with my kx3, look at my QRZ page.
Stop the fussing and get on the air!!!

I think I made it under the wire.

Re: [Elecraft] power requirements for a K3S, KPA500, KAT500, P3?

2018-06-14 Thread Dean L
It's a simple visit to ohms law.
OR
Just grab a "kill a watt" tester and look at your current draw.
With a quick "in the head math" the 15 amp breaker will be fine.

Remember the 30amp supply is at 13.8v not 117v ac the panel breaker is at.

Again

Ohms law.
BTW : glad you asked the question rather than change breaker size.

[Elecraft] OT: Inverter type generators used for FD?

2017-07-07 Thread Dean L
Howdy gang,
I'm going to chime in this OT thread before it gets shut down.
I live off grid ( past 7 years) watching over a very large and efficient
summer "playtoy", for an eccentric fellow.
We have used the 2000i's BIG bro, the Honda 6500 and now the 7000i. Both
are very noisy generating 20db+ of wideband noise, well into vhf range. I
have have tried some snap chokes, on th output without any joy, but may try
one of the Jim Brown type filters.

I simply shut the genset off and use a battery when operating my k3/P3,
which is a PITA.

An off OT testimonial I ran an EU 6500i , 39000 hours nonstop (only to
give it a fresh drink of Castrol syntec every 150-200 hours..) NEVER had
the head off !! The last 1 hours it burned abt a pint of castrol every
other day. I finally replaced it with a pair of eu7000's before it quit on
its own.
I'm not sure if it was the synthetic oil or Honda engineering, but that
was AMAZING.
I will also add, it's a very good thing we bought 2 of the 7000i's, as
they have been in and out the shop CONSTANTLY, JUNK in comparison.

Any suggestions on having to beefing up the filter for the higher wattage
genset? Sources for the ferrites?
Sorry for hijacking the slightly OT thread

Re: [Elecraft] Signing your posts, KPA1500, KPA500

I see many new guys on here who constantly dont sign there posts/ name or
call.
Probably of the paranoid...
I personally take offense, be proud!
I'm proud to be a "code" extra, passed my general in front of an fcc ...
at 13 years old.
Advanced and extra at the VEC . Woo-hoo.

I'm proud of my call (and name) also in my email address.
But I guess in the big picture who cares. Just a courtesy I guess.

Perhaps a new KX3+ (KX4?) might really kill the FT-817. Who knows? BOY
-what I wouldn't pay for a KX3+ that would give me 160m through 70cm
(andplease somebody add 1.25m and 23cm all-mode !!!). I would even settle
forone that was only 6m - 23cm. Call it the KX-6/23 or something.

I thought you were dealing with a higher current system. Sorry to be
presumptuous. My K2 would tx approx 10 min +/- on a 2.9ah ( drawn to 50%

Guess we should have asked.

Re: [Elecraft] Who sells a small RF quiet solar charge controller?

2017-03-18 Thread Dean L
Snip
I use a Genasun GV-5 and a Bioenno Power 4.5 Ah LiFePO4 battery to power my
KX2. I agree with Jim. These components work great together--but with one
exception: I can't float the battery with the GV-5. When the battery
approaches full charge, its internal monitoring disconnects the battery
from the circuit, causing the GV-5 to go to open circuit voltage of >= 18 V
in full sunlight. According to Elecraft, this would fry my radio.《》》

Wouldn't the 18v be on the ARRAY side of the circuit, not the LOAD side,
therefore the radio would be protected and not see the 18v? Am I missing
something? Is the radio connected to the battery?

The "Moohoo" on Amazon, that Nicklas suggested has an issue ( according to
reviews) with array voltage dropping ever so slightly, it goes offline.
Typical of the "chenease" junk...

I have ordered The "SBCC", by KI0BK. As someone suggested earlier is a 3
stage controller, battery friendly. Those using it claim it's quiet and
EFFICIENT, very important at $1 a watt and mostly cloudy where I live.
Stick with one designed by a ham, who's goal is radio quiet-
YMMV, good luck es 73!

Re: [Elecraft] (OT) CW Resonant Speaker

2017-02-20 Thread Dean L
This whole topic is very interesting to me. Very ironically, just before
this topic got started, I was thinking about qrp hall of famer, Rick
Littlefield's, Ham Radio magazine article Mar 89', featuring a resonant cw
speaker.
It was built using a solo 16 cup and a small 700hz transducer.
I put it on my to do list, back in 89'... nearly 28 years later I FINALLY
sent Rick an email asking if he still had any of these little speakers
left, after so many years... A few days later I had a package from Rick
with a couple of the little speakers!
The generosity of old school hams never ceases to amaze me.

I have a question for those in the "know"--

Knowing very little about the physics of sound, does using a thinner tube
as opposed to a larger diameter one, make the tube have a narrower "
bandwidth " ?
How would on increase the Q of the device ( if that's even possible)?

I'd appreciate any input. TIA

I believe that is why Jeff, kg7hdz, provided a link to an excel chart that
has lengths of NO half waves in US ham bands. Saves a bunch of math.

Making the Antenna " End fed non halfwave( in the ham bands )wire" or the
EFNHWW.
