I solved my KX3 drift problem, it wasn't electrical but rather
mechanicalreading in the manual about the VFO I increased the
resistance to the knob spin and  *voila* no more drift! I really like
simple solutions to problems.

[Elecraft] VFO drift KX3

Lately, I've noticed my 3-year-old KX3 drifts a small amount, according to
the readout, in CW mode. For instance, if I set rig on 7.033.00 hit the key
and look at the readout it will say 7.033.010 and sometimes bounces back to
7.033.00

I don't remember this being a problem before. Is this normal for the KX3 or
is there something I should look into?

[Elecraft] FT8 question

Happy Holidays All!

I'm using FT8 into my KX3 in Data A mode but getting almost no contacts, On
the waterfall, I see a lot activity on 40m and 20m. I've followed the
advice from the KX3 manual for levels, but I still get very few
connections, like I'm not being heard. I also run k1jt WSPR mode and that
seems to work well, I get consistent results on the bands that are open.

Currently I have the KX3 set to 10w output into a 23' long endfed dipole
20' in the air. I live in an RV Park which has very very restricted antenna
restrictions! One complaint from a neighbor about any RFI would cause the
manager to tell me to take the antenna down.

A couple of years ago I ran FT8 on my ICOM 746pro at 5 to 10 watts max
output and had very good results.

So, my question am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions would be
appreciated?

[Elecraft] KXBC3 question

 My KX3 is about 2 years old, recently I set he The KXBC3 to 16hr charge
and powered down the KX3 and everything looked normal. However, a few hours
later I noticed the Lo-Supply message was flashing on and off, but when I
checked the KX3 was getting 13.61vdc and I believe charging was still
taking place.

So, charging voltage had not changed, but the Lo-Supply message kept
flashing until I cancelled battery charge. Any suggestions why the KX3 was
displaying Lo-Supply with the KX3 powered off but 13.61vdc was measured at
the rig?

around 1/2 power on 15 meters into a 50-ohm dummyload.

Any suggestions what to look for or test?

[Elecraft] KXPA100 low out on 30 and 15 meters

I bought used the KXPA100 with ATU.  The KXPA100 puts out less than full
power on 30 and 15 meters. The other bands the KXP!00 puts out 100 watts
and a bit more.

Both thte KX3 and the KXPA100 have the latest firmware installed.

This according to the LED's on the amp and connected to an MFJ dummyload. I
don't own an external wattmeter. I've run through calibration several times
and the overall results remain the same.

Any help would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] KX3 keying connection to amp question?

 Greetings, can anyone suggest how to connect a KX3 to a non-Elecraft amp
keying circuit? I'm thinking I should use a small reed relay to do the
keying. The amp uses the typical grounding a pin on the amp to key up
amplifier.

Guys, I'm old enuf when CW testing was required by the FCC for any license 
grade. Commercial CW Ops could make really good $$$ as a shipboard 
communications officer, I mean really good bucks! Much better than slinging 
hamburgers at MacDonalds...wait, I'm not sure the Big Mac was available 
back then.


Anyway, enjoy whatever mode floats your boat.I'm into FT8 lately, but I'll 
get bored with it soon and go back to dits and dahsif I can find anyone 
on the air in that mode.


Just get on the air, for heavens sake!!!

[Elecraft] KXPD3 paddles dit issue

I too was having issues with the KXPD3 paddles  on my KX3 dropping the dits at 
times. Long story short, I took the dit side of the key apart and "cleaned" the 
round barrel which makes contact with the key. and this solved the problem.


Too easy eh? Careful not to lose the very small screws and parts!

[Elecraft] KX3 Utility connection problems

So, all is up and running thanks to Don W3FPR!! Don responded back within an 
hour of my request for help getting the KX3 Utility to work. Don had a few 
suggestions. Trying each one, I finally stumbled across the answer to my sad 
story!


I bought the official Elecraft USB cable and downloaded the indicated software 
from Elecraft website.


The final fix: I had to reinstall the fidi drivers again and now everything 
working, including fldigi and WSJT-X.

[Elecraft] Help with KX3 Utility

I can't get my Windows 7 to connect to my new KX3 using the Elecraft KX3 
utility software.

I bought the official USB cable from Elecraft and I have the USB mapped to COM8 
on my PC and the cable plugged into ACC1.


So far, all is good.


Then I launch the KX3 software to read memory data from the KX3 and it never 
finds the data! It just keeps searching for the port.

Is there some mode I must set the KX3 to before accessing acc1?

[Elecraft] Review of the KXPD3 ker

I just bought the KXPD3 for my new KX3


First the disclaimer.I'm not a hotshot CW op, maybe back in my novice days 
as wn6sdw. Now, I'm lucky to inch towards 20wpm these days, but only when the 
going downhill and the wind is at my back. And no wine.


With that said, I like this little bugger. For the price, the KXPD3 fits 
perfect on the front of the KX3 and is very convenient to use.


Its definitely not your $300 ~ $500 key performance. the KXPD3 is definitely 
not the smoothest key I have used, but more than adequate for field operation, 
or just relaxing working a QSO or two.


I also like use b mode for this paddle.


The cool thing is that Elecraft kept the external paddle port live so you can 
have to keys connected at the same. I use the Kent TP1 and the k1el  Winkeyer 
for contesting.

opinion of the KXPD3 key? The only review on eHam was not good.


Seems lot'sa CW ops like the Palm Pico key.

[Elecraft] KX3 power output per band question

Hello again, I noticed today that with my new KX3 driving into a 50-ohm dummy 
load that I can set the power output to 15w on bands 80 - 20meters. However, 
the remaining bands, 160, 17, 12, 10 meters the maximum power output is 
12watts. And on 10w on 6 meters.


Is this normal?

My rig's s/n is 9403, do I still need to consider upgrading to the after-market

[Elecraft] Laptop to KX3 question

I have older Dell laptop and new KX3 and KX3-PCKT cables.


With no digital software running the following happens all the time:

When I plug green-band cable from PC phones output to KX3 mic input the KX3 
goes immediately into TX mode with no modulation. I followed the KX3 manual and 
I'm using DATA A. Nothing what I do stops the KX3 from Tx when I plug both 
cables in between the PC and KX3 mic connector.


VOX is turned off.


Any help please.

That is correct, AND if you have the KDSP2, you need to set those filter
centers to your new sidetone pitch in the DSP menu settings.

700hzmy question, do I really need to realign the filters? This is what 
I've read!


I'm discovering I like a higher tone rather than lower CW tone. At

[Elecraft] Soldering Station recommendation

Greetings Elecraft afficiados, I'm looking for a recommendation for a soldering 
station, my Weller temperature-controled station of 20 years is dying an 
agonizing death and its time to upgrade!


I don't use my soldering station a lot, maybe once a month and once in a while 
put a kit together, so I don't need a really expensive unit, but probably one 
under $100 for my needs with temperature control.

[Elecraft] 4-ohm to 8-ohm question

My K2 audio output is 4-ohms which I drive into an 8-ohm ICOM speaker with 
filters. Yes, it works OK, but I would like to match them better.
In the "olden" days I would simply use a 4-ohm to 8-ohm audio transformer, but 
I can't find them anymore! Really, I've looked at all the suspect places, 
including eBay and Amazon.
Any suggestions, I just want and easy, simple way to matching the two 
impedance's without losing power which would happen if I used a resister across 
the ICOM speaker. I know I can just drive a small audio amp between them, but 
that means more wires to power up the amp..

Does anyone know if the MH2 is the same mic as the MH3?

[Elecraft] K2 doing weird stuff again!

Don kindly helped me out a couple of years ago with my K2 (S/N 3500+) with a PA 
HOT error when the K2 had been sitting off in my house, room temp about 67degs. 
Lately now when I turn on K2 from a cold start the fan turns on immediately and 
when I try to transmit into a 50-ohm dummy load I get the PA HOT error and the 
rig won't put out power now. Originally, the tPA was set for about 20c which is 
68f, which is the room temp in my shack.
So, as a hunch I ran tPA through 255 and set it at 5c (41degs f) which, I 
assume you, is not the temp in my house/shackHI HI!! I ran tPA back up to 
20c and the PA HOT problem returned. So, I set the tPA at 16c (60degs F) and my 
K2 is now happy!
Any thoughts what's going on, is my K2 starting to head South, or maybe I 
should consider doing a hard reset? I hate a reset cuz all the filters also get 
reset and even after writing down all the values, it's still a pain in the a**!
I have the KPA100 and the latest firmware from a while back.

Anyone using the MFJ-297 desk mic for a K2? My setup is compatible with ICOM 
mic connector so this should mate up to my K2 FB.

[Elecraft] MH2 question

Has anyone sent their Heil MH2 to AB5N Bob Nagy for his upgrade? I've never 
been impressed with my K2 SSB tx audio and I've done everything Elecraft has 
recommended to improve the TX audio, including sending it to Gary for alignment 
-- Gary did a wonderful job aligning my K2, but the K2 TX audio still leaves a 
lot to be desired!!
Thanks for any advice you can offer regardnig the AB5N mods.

[Elecraft] L34 on K2 tuning question?

Changes while tuning L34 on my K2 are very subtle.
Just barely hear L34 peak with the slug near the top
of the canis this normal?

I'm just trying to determine if the receiver on my K2
is working as it should. Signals on the K2 with the
Preamp switched in sound about the same as they do
on my Ten Tec Argonaut V from 160 thru 10. With the
preamp out, signals sound a little softer than the
Argonaut, but I can still hear them. Is this normal as
well?

[Elecraft] Lousy Tx audio reports using K2

Happy Holidays All,

Getting lousy SSB tx audio reports on K2, SN 3345. I
did the Elecraft-approved 2.6khz bandwith and using
the Heil MH2 mic.

Specifically, I get reports I don't have enough highs
in my tx audio. I use the Spectrograph program to
align filters per KSB2

On K2 receive, the audio is outstandingas good as
my ICOM 746pro.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
