Re: [Elecraft] A plug for one of Elecraft's lesser-known kits

2022-09-11 Thread John Harper
Be sure to be aware of your device's maximum permissible input power level
(I'm not sure what it is for a tinySA). If measuring a 100W transmitter
with an analyzer whose maximum input level is 10mW, you'll need 10 dB more
attenuation - this could be in the form of a fixed attenuator on the output
of the directional coupler. Or, better yet, just turn the transmitter down
to a 10-watt (or less) output if using a 30dB coupler.

Those are correct who say that an antenna (dipole) doesn't have to be low

way toward limiting the contacts you make to NVIS propagation.

[Elecraft] VNA shootout proposal

2021-06-25 Thread John Harper
Thanks for the info, John and I don't blame you for wanting to hang on to
it. Test equipment has become a hobby in itself lately, for many of us I
think.

I hadn't thought of measuring crosstalk - that would be a method of
determining 'why' a divergence of two VNA's might exist. I'm mainly
interested in knowing if one exists, by how much and at what frequencies.
Explaining the reason(s) for it might be something to be explored later.

Maybe Rob Sherwood will take an interest and make a chart similar to that
for receivers he's tested. Or the ARRL.

[Elecraft] VNA shootout proposal

2021-06-25 Thread John Harper
I'm as interested as anyone else who might have one to know the accuracy
and reliability of these affordable VNA's, whether nano- or the one from
SDR-Kits.

I have a variety of VNA's available but am lacking the SDR-Kits model.
Wouldn't it be nice if we knew where it stood compared to the newer
nanoVNA's costing a fraction of the price for the same dynamic range and a
higher upper frequency limit?

Also, how do the hobby VNA's compare to lab-grade VNA's at HF and up to 1.2
GHz?

If you own an SDR-Kits VNA, can do without it for 3 weeks and trust me to
return it to you, please see my offer here:

[Elecraft] OT: Nano VNA

2021-06-25 Thread John Harper
I've bought several nanoVNA's from "aursinc" on Amazon and have always
gotten a real one, not a clone. Here's another version:
https://amzn.to/3daSrmI

The latest flavor of these devices operates up to 4GHz. Not many hams need
that upper freq limit but, when shopping for a nanoVNA, pay attention to
the dynamic range offered. The 4GHz nanoVNA has 20 dB better dynamic range
than any other model:
https://www.tindie.com/products/hcxqsgroup/nanovna-v2-plus4/

Showing "Out of stock" intermittently.

I know that some may consider these devices as toys but I've found them to
be amazingly accurate when compared to their expensive counterparts at my
work QTH:
https://ae5x.blogspot.com/search/label/nanoVNA

They are also useful learning tools with a lot of people reporting that
they now know how to interpret a Smith chart and make use of the info they
provide.

[Elecraft] An FT8 Radio- just dreaming

2021-02-22 Thread John Harper
The latest firmware for several Icom rigs has a dedicated FT8 button. And
my new IC-705 is seen by the PC as a sound device so no need for any
external equipment or excess cabling - one USB cable does CAT and audio.
https://www.icomjapan.com/support/firmware_driver/3220/

The mcHF and a few other rigs have been doing it this way for years.
I'm still - and always will be - mostly a CW op but I appreciate FT8 from
time to time to run in the background on a "dead" band. It can be an
eye-opener.

[Elecraft] Can I rent a K4?

2021-02-03 Thread John Harper
Let's throw some numbers in, just for S:

I pay $200 for 2 weeks of togetherness with a K4. Another $100 for 2-way
shipping.

I'm out $300 if I decide not to keep the rig.

No one's going to go for this unless they're already thinking seriously of
buying the thing. If they only like it marginally, they realize they now
have a $300 dud to send back or (more likely) they realize that they're
already 85 or 90% of the way (financially) toward ownership.

And...Elecraft only has 10 K4's slotted for this program. They'll prolly
sell 8 or 9 of them and can continue to rent, or eventually sell as used
(at 90% retail) the remaining two. They're ahead either way.

To top it off, they benefit from the social media buzz created by those 90%
who like, decide to keep and rave about the rig online. A few may even name
their firstborns Wayne and/or Eric. It's a win-win for all involved.

Few people who use/own one are dissatisfied with an E rig. This would
potentially increase the number of people within that pool.

John AE5X
https://ae5x.blogspot.com

>no longer be sold as new resulting in a loss of value that is

[Elecraft] Can I rent a K4?

2021-02-03 Thread John Harper
I wonder if this model would work?

Flex offers a refund for those who try one of their rigs and don't like it.
But a rental would pose less risk to the manufacturer.

There are (rumored) a small number of K4's in existence - the rest, of
course, are on hold. But regardless...even after full production has begun:

What if, before plunking down 4 kilodollars, I could rent the rig for two
weeks?

If I don't like it, I send it back to Elecraft and I'm only out the rental
fee and the cost to ship (renter pays shipping in both directions).

If I do like it, I keep the rig and pay the balance.

The rental fee would separate the serious potential buyers from those
simply wanting a two-week joyride. The question is, how much of a rental
fee would be acceptable for a company to offer such a business model?

[Elecraft] Dedicated FTx Rig

2019-08-11 Thread John Harper
SDR radios don't require the entanglement of cables and can be quite
portable. I have two - the mcHF and the older Apache Labs Anan-10e. Only
one ethernet cable connects them to a small laptop for any/all modes.
6-160m with the Anan; 10-80 with the mcHF.

Hopefully the KX4 will have this efficiency and easy-of-connectivity as
well.

John AE5X
https://ae5x.blogspot.com

The idea would be to avoid dragging along a computer and hassle with all
the cabling. There all kinds of folks here on this reflector using
KX2's and KX3's interfaced with laptops and iPads for portable
operation. That just seems like a sloppy way to do it when a rather
simple all-in-one unit with a much simpler radio could handle the same
task less expensively.

[Elecraft] Elecraft KX4

2019-07-01 Thread John Harper
I sometimes doubt that Chris M0NKA ever meant for it to be a commercially
viable rig but, despite what you correctly mentioned, it has become one. I
think his original intent was to provide a project to experiment with
coding etc - the platform for that experiment just happened to be a radio.

The firmware is open source, thus all the clones. Chris recently complained
that he is now expected and often asked to provide support for the Chinese
clones! That's gotta burn...

A group in Germany is now providing the lion's share of updates.

But, what all this proves, is what's possible in the form factor in terms
of with.without PC and ease of connectivity from keeping audio in a digital
format for PC exchange.

If Elecraft made a similarly featured KX4 it would sell like hotcakes and
would be hitting the sweet spot of how so many people operate today:
portable, FT8, CW/phone, with and w/o a PC. What an attractive set of
features for new younger hams and those without the ability to have a
"proper" antenna.

I am hesitant to experiment too much with my mcHF because support and
documentation is so lacking. I can't easily recover from an error by
reading - I'd have to ask in a forum and hope someone both knows the answer
and isn't too burnt out by being asked other questions, that he'll answer
me.

If a company with Elecraft's reputation produced such a rig I'd probably be
moved to write a tributary haiku, or maybe even a limerick.

John AE5X
https://ae5x.blogspot.com
___

I’m with you 100%, John! Hope Elecraft is listening!

Love the mcHF, but there is really NO customer support. If the current
group of developers aren’t interested in fixing a bug or adding
something new, you’re told to do it yourself. Not something I’m
interested in doing, or really able to do. But as is, its still a fun
and innovative transceiver!

Elecraft could do it right!

[Elecraft] Elecraft KX4

2019-07-01 Thread John Harper
I recently bought a mcHF (a real one, not a clone) and, as much as I like
it, I wish Elecraft would make a similar radio.

The main advantages of a mcHF over anything else out there are its built-in
panadapter and its one-cable connection to a PC for digital modes. No PC
required for SSB, CW or PSK31.

The KX2 and mcHF are of a similar size and are shown together here for
comparison:
http://ae5x.blogspot.com/2019/05/comparing-mchf-and-kx2.html

Disadvantages of the mcHF - and where an Elecraft (KX4) would shine - are
in support and documentation. I hope we'll see a KX4 soon, with all the
Elecraft advantages and none of the mcHF's shortcomings.

[Elecraft] Anyone use Solar Power for your ham shack?

2019-06-21 Thread John Harper
Been solar powered for three years now with no QRN from my SunSaver MPPT
controller. Two 100W Renogy panels on the roof in parallel (40V, 5A) feed
two Trojan T105 6V "golf cart" batteries in series:

https://ae5x.blogspot.com/2016/08/operating-on-solar-power.html

Ham stations make a great test platform for solar experimentation since
much of our gear operates from 13.8VDC, ie no need for inverters for most
of our equipment.

[Elecraft] Elecraft business practices

2019-02-08 Thread John Harper
I had a similar issue recently after ordering a KXPA100. The "Status" page
said they were in stock, both in kit form and completed, so I ordered a
completed one.

I ordered, my credit card was charged (not a hold of funds - charged).
After a week I called to find out the status of my order and was told that
several parts were on backorder and that they were expected the following
week. I asked the lady to cancel my order. She put me on hold and a man
then picked up the call, telling me that the amp is "ready to ship and will
go out today". No thanks.

In retrospect, I believe my order had been lost and would not have been
found had I not called. I didn't like the fact that my card had been
charged - I've been told since that this is not legal - or that the item
wasn't available despite what the Status page said. If they're not going to
keep it updated, don't have it at all.

The whole thing turned out to be a blessing in disguise:
https://ae5x.blogspot.com/2018/12/thoughts-on-hardrock-50.html

I continue to enjoy my KX2 and KPA500 ;-)

The upcoming QSX kit from G0UPL may have FT8 capability. Hans announced

[Elecraft] FT8 Upgrade

2018-11-28 Thread John Harper
And there are 3 upcoming events for the newest version of WSJT-X - and the
first one is tonight from 0200 - 0300Z. This is a "mock" contest.

The 2nd one - also a mock test - is this Friday evening (NA time) from
0200-0300Z.

Both of the above test contests will take place on 7078 and 14.078 kHz and
require thus use of either -rc4 or -rc5 although -rc5 is preferred as it i
sexpected to be the final beta version before the finished V2 is released
in mid-December.

These versions allow for the contest exchange used in the RTTY Roundup.

The first actual contest using FT8 exclusively is the FT8 Roundup taking
place this weekend described here:
https://www.rttycontesting.com/ft8-roundup/rules/

If you plan to participate be sure to carefully read this link as well:

[Elecraft] KX3 booster

2018-11-05 Thread John Harper
I'm surprised a reputable company like DXE would sell the brand:

That's why it's cheap -- a lot of the parts are missing. It's quite
normal for power amps to generate strong harmonics -- 5dB down is common
for the second harmonic -- so they must be filtered by an output
network. Solid state amps without tuners have networks that match to 50
ohms. Tube amps use either Pi or Pi-L networks that are tunable.

They operated VP6D/MM on the way to Ducie and may do the same as they
leave, if they're not too burnt out.

[Elecraft] FG/SM7RYR CQing with KX3

2018-11-01 Thread John Harper
I just chatted with Roger FG/SM7RYR who is currently working NA, EU and
JA's on 14.021.7 with his KX3 at 10 watts from a beach in FG.

He must have the most-traveled KX2/KX3's out there:

He's CQing away...and loud.

[Elecraft] K3 FT8 Problem VP6D

2018-10-30 Thread John Harper
Since VP6D is responding to multiple callers at once (on multiple
frequencies), his signal strength is reduced from what it would be if he
were making a transmission on a single frequency.

For example, if a single-freq reply from him would be -23dB, if he is
transmitting to several callers simultaneously on 3 different frequencies,
his strength on each would be only about -25.5 dB so maybe below your
threshold for copying him until he makes a single-frequency reply.

Re: [Elecraft] In response to several AX1 questions at Pacificon

And with the right size loading coil could it be used on 630 and 2200

Another question -- if a right-sized capacity hat were added to the
top of the whip, could this antenna be somewhat effective on 30 or 40
meters.
