worth the 150 bux I paid for them back a few years. I use them with all

This may not be what you want Matt, but for small portable radios I use
a two-pack of heavy-duty 6V lantern batteries wired in series. These
are usually right around 5 bux at WallyWorld and last for quite a
while...several extended outings.
I don't remove the plastic wrap holding the two

Once, a while back, I was messing with a 30M xtal in a homebrew

I have a set of these and, for a base, had my kid cut a piece of steel
out of 10/12 gage sheet that is slightly larger than the paddle
base...rounded the corners a bit with a sander and it holds down well
with the magnets. I do, however, set my paddles for a very light
touch... I'm sure any

Great mod Matti! Always thought the K2's audio sounded a little
tight... tacked a couple of .1 uf caps across the pads per your
instructions and it sounds noticeably better.
It is an easy mod and I heartily encourage others to try it...easy to
do...and remove... if you don't think so...but
Yes... Once I was out operating portable and a summer storm was
brewing up out in central Nebraska...I am in western Ia, a distance of
perhaps 150-200 miles. My K2 LCD started to display random numbers and
acted like it had gone crazy... I quickly realized what must be going
on and
Hey Gary!
I solder at 800F with a Weller temp-controlled iron and have a little
tub of Kesler 44 rosin flux on the bench. When reheating a joint I
take an Exacto knife with the number 11 blade(the pointed triangular one
that is also good for removing splinters, self-mutilation, etc.) and

You may have the same problem I had...wound the toroids too tight
and didn't have the windings spread out far enough on the low-pass
output filters...it made a huge difference on my rig. Try spreading the
windings out or just re-wind them so that the windings are spaced out
With Elecraft now doing SMD I think it will be virtually impossible for
Wayne et al not to design and build a small pocket-sized radio using
surface-mount devices. Maybe a partial kit with factory-built circuits
for the amps and oscillators, but user-built frequency-specific boards

Even if you do put the K1 on 12 or 10 meters the lack of conversion gain
of the front end ('612 mixer) at those frequencies will make it a bit
hard of hearing...probably around -115 dBm or so. I know this from
building several '612-based rigs for 10 meters.
My suggestion...homebrew a Sierra
My solution to this is simply to get the list digest. Yes, it is a day
late but that is not a problem here. I often just check the topic
headers and if there is nothing of intrest...hit the delete key
once...and this happens with the QRP-L list also...it has a lot of me
too posts, but I
Hummm...just wondering...do you guys over in GB and Europe have those

Keith, Ladies Gents...
Just a few short weeks ago I had K2 #186 sitting on my old Triton

what are the differences and similarities in performance and use between
these two radios... Which one do I prefer for CW, and

Esteemed Fellow E-crafters...
One useful technique often employed here at the MJF Radio Labs to
remove solder from those pesky little holes is to snip off a chunk of
desoldering braid(6-10 mm or so) and position it on the hole with a pair
of tweezers, hemostats, etc. Then, using a hot

Here's my suggestion for a 10 M beacon. If you homebrew currently
with modest success you can probably build it...
Mix a 24.0 mHz crystal and a 4.194 crystal with a 612 mixer...yup,
no expensive custom-cut crystals, just a couple of half-buck uP
crystals. That will

Mouser Electronics sells nice BNC-ended cables with low-loss
flexible coax for little more than the cost of connectors. I have a
bunch and they are a great deal. Just google Mouser.

Hey!
I like a nice wide red rubber band, the type that comes around one
of my favorite foods, broccoli, stretched around the knob and positioned
so that the edge of the band just protrudes from the front edge of knob
maybe 1/32...that way you can catch the lip of it anywhere around the
