Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question

2023-05-14 Thread Mike Maloney
Your resting temperature at 42C seems TOO warm to me?   My KPA resting temp
runs about the same as ambient temperature of shack, 25-30C.   With 25-30W
drive from TS-890,my KPA seldom reaches 3rd stage 60 degrees.   Have you

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KPA500 sn 1910 dead

2022-01-17 Thread Mike Maloney
I was gifted a KPA-500 in Aug. 2019.  Used about a month before It blew a main
line fuse.   That was replaced and the amp remained dead.  What happened was
the center bolt holding the power transformer was not torqued down properly and
when the amp was tilted the core shifted into the low voltage supply and
damaged it requiring replacement at the Elecraft shop.    Hopefully, that is
not what knocked out your 12 volt supply?

If yours does have noticeable him, you may want to check the tightness of
mounting nut for the power transformer and retighten if needed (assuming it
bothers you). There is a spec for the tightness of that nut. I believe it can
be found in the assembly manual, if not also in the operating manual.

[Elecraft] OT; large ferrite toroid core?

We were gifted a somewhat large (6"OD, 2.6" ID, 9/16" thick) ferrite core of
unknown mix and original use.   On face was marked 6.6uH w/4turns.   My
thinking it might make a good common mode RF choke on the output of an inverter
generator or on coax feedline.    Not familiar with properties of toroid cores

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 cabinet buzz

2021-05-30 Thread Mike Maloney
The KPA-500 transformer should be more than just a "hair" away from sides
(step 6 above) as there are rubber bumpers and a ribbon cable between that
should NOT be pinched.  Refer to Kit Assembly Instructions page 35 and figure
52.

 wrote:

There is KPA500 buzz (normal), and KPA500 BUZZ (abnormal).  I own two.

KPA Numero Uno was bought way back when, when the kits were first
available.  When I first built it, it buzzed something akin to to your
teeth clacking when you notice a full-grown T. Rex is standing next to
you.  At that time, many were complaining about KPA500 buzz, but one must
understand that some would complain that their K3 did not come with the
case stuffed with Krugerands.  A call to Support convinced them it was
really loud.  They sent me an updated bolt, washer, and spacer set.  I very
carefully repositioned the transformer, and torqued the bolt to factory
spec.  Several times.  No buzz then, no buzz now that I can hear.  I do now
have an LP-100A sitting on the top left forward of the cabinet.  A perfect
fit.  Perhaps that is a dampner, who knows.

KPA500 Numero Two-o was bought this year, is factory-built, and has a very
slight audible buzz on cw.  These amps have compact, toroidal, linear
transformers that produce a little buzz.  If it ever rises to an annoying
level, I would:  1)  Turn off the amp using the front-panel switch to drain
the filter caps and let the fan run all the way down.  2)  Turn off the
rear-panel switch.  3) Unlug the amp from A/C.  4.  Remove the top cover as
shown in the manual.  5)  Using a very strong light, see if the transformer
is touching the cabinet.  6)  If so, you can SLIGHTLY.  loosen the bolt
(PAY ATTENTION TO THE TIGHTNESS OF THE BOLT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TORQUE
WRENCH), and very, very carefully adjust the transformer so it is a hair
away from the cabinet on all sides.  7)  Reverse the steps.  Repeat if
necessary.  OR  Call Support.  OR wear headphones.  OR Fuggedaboutit.
NOTE:  You can indeed make it worse.  The reason you are probably hearing
it for the first time is that all amps I have owned with linear supplies
also buzz, but the constant fan masks it.

It amounts to band information both ways so the amp can switch bands from
the K3's band information before you provide RF, the KPA500 front panel band
buttons can bandswitch the K3, and K3 drive power can be set to two
different levels based on the amp's OPER/STBY switch. My K3 provides 30

[Elecraft] KX3 sidetone booster

2019-10-02 Thread Mike Maloney
Getting a nice boost from the stock speaker (MON level 2) at my preferred pitch
of 500Hz.   Booster is a 12-3/4 inch piece of 1-1/4" PVC tube (1-5/8"OD) with
one end cut at 30 deg. Placed approx. 1/8 inch from the speaker holes gives the
best gain.   Tube would be slightlyshorter for higher pitch tone.  Easy to find
the peak by swinging the pitch tone.   A slider sleeveon the end allows
adjusting to desired pitch.   For CW ops it is really nice having the
additionalaudio boost at your preferred pitch.   I pass this on FYI to those
who may like to try it themselves.

I get the best response for CW pitch volume from the K3 stock speaker with my

The ease of changing CW pitch in the K3 is indeed a great asset in
 setting
things up for best copy, and I have found myself using it quite a
 few times.
The immediate reason to change pitch has usually been a perception
 that with
the existing setting, the best copy pitch does not exactly coincide
 with the
CW tuning indicator (another great CW asset of the K3), or with the
 peak DSP
filter response. Many times this has led me to change the pitch
 setting by a
small amount, whether my general preference du jour is for a low or
 higher
pitch. To make such an adjustment I like to set a wide DSP bandwidth
 and
slowly tune through a received signal. The apparent loudness doesn't
 stay
constant, nor does it follow a smooth variation that I attribute to
 my own
hearing response. Instead I hear peaks within range of piches that
 would be
reasonable for CW, that I attribute to the speaker and its
 surroundings. (I
would say that since I went to the SP3, there is less of this
 variation, but
no matter how good the speaker, there will always be such variations
 because
objects around the speaker cause reflections. Phones will always be the
better approach) Rather than adjusting the pitch to some value
considered ideal based no prior considerations, I set it for a peak
 in the
accoustical response of the particular speaker and its surroundings.
 Then
going back to normal DSP selectivity I generally find better agreement
between perceived loudness and centering the received signal in the
passband, at least until I move things around in the shack...

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Power Supply Cable Size

2018-08-01 Thread Mike Maloney
Okay have looked over the posts, but somehow have missed the actual
AWG(American wire gage) SIZE of the stock DC pair?   Anyone KNOW this or maybe
even micro-ohm tested (a long shot) it?  Voltage drop (ps to amp) divided by
full load dc amps would be close enough.

I also made major contributions to N0AX's ARRL Gounding Book -- much of
it is based on the Power and Grounding slide show talk that's on my
website.  And some of what I've written is from the IEEE Green and
Emerald Books."

The last 25 years of my work life was as a consultant designing large
sound systems for public buildings -- theaters, stadiums, churches, jazz
clubs, even the United Terminal at O'Hare.

Interesting readings.  Would have thought KXPA more efficient.   Is this into
dummy load and what frequency was test?

Re: [Elecraft] Items you think you can depend on

2017-09-04 Thread Mike Maloney
A line voltage monitor/alarm a very good idea.   Am surprised Dave's KPA500
power transformer core was not humming away at 60hz over excitation before he
got it off line?Being retired from a large electric utility substation
department, I know LTC  (load tap changer) controls can sometimes fail.   For
those on a very rural line it could be an overheadline regulator gone to max
steps boost (HV) or buck for low voltage.  Usually these are single phase large
auto-transformers with a plus or minus 10% in 16 steps each side of neutral
position.  73

Subject: [Elecraft] Items you think you can depend on

Everyone,

Over time we can grow complacent on many service items such as electrical
power, water and other services over time. Well that can be concerning as
many hidden changes can result in damage to your home and equipment.

Late late night I came in to my den and was closing down my ham station
when I notice my fault light on my KPA500 linear was on. I powered it down
and retired for the evening. This morning I powered up the linear (KPA500)
and at once I got a fault light and had a high voltage alert. I powered
down the linear and checked my input line voltage. It was 137 volts RMS! To
be sure it wasn't my imagination I rechecked the voltage with a different
meter with the same result. In checking the 220 volt outlet I measured 274
volts! My linear is set up for 220 volts operation and it was getting over
90 volts HV.

I alerted the neighbors and cut the main breaker to the house. I then
called the power company's service number and reported the problem. A short
time later they called me back and reported that a regulator in the local
sub station had "Stuck" and was reset. In rechecking my line voltage it was
118 volts on the low side and 236 volts on the high side.

In the 12 years we have been at this qth we found that our town's locally
run power company has been very reliable but this experience showed me that
it is not a bad idea to check your line voltage every once in a while.

Re: [Elecraft] Wattage Draw - K3S/100 vs KPA500/KAT500 - for UPS

2017-08-30 Thread Mike Maloney
Oh my!  The KPA500 is more efficient than you give it credit.   Since few have
instruments to measure ac input parameters, will volunteer actual measurement
figures. At 650W output into 50 ohm load, highest VA recorded was at 14.1 MHz at
1166.  Watts 974 with a pf of 0.83 or 83%.   AC input amps 10.3.   Awesome!

 Tom,

That 3000 watts I mentioned is for everything in the station.
The KPA500 alone needs 120 volts at about 13 amps, maybe peaking to
something greater.
