[Elecraft] PR6-10/KXV3A Failure
I have the DIGOUT turned on for the bands that use the preamplifier (i.e. 6, 10 and 12 meter bands) so the preamplifier is on. I hear it switch on when I push RX ANT switch. I am only using the preamplifier on one radio at a time. It works great in my old K3 but I can't get it to work on the other K3. [Elecraft] P3 UPDATE
Good morning group. Well time for my request again to Elecraft. Could we please see some firmware update to the P3. Now that the KX3 project is up and running perhaps we could finish the P3 project. I personally would like to see the noise blanker applied to the SVGA and some scrolling capability to the CW and Digital format. Paul, is it possible to increase the ram in the SVGA. In keeping up with your competition both the Icom 7600 and the TS-990 have enough memory to make number of digital QSOs and even offer a time stamp with the contact allowing one to scroll through the contacts using the up and down keys so one can add them to one's logging program. WELL, I SOLVED THE FAN NOISE ON MY KPA500. HAVING HAD SOLID STATE AMPS IN THE PAST I LIKE TO RUN THE FAN AT THE LOW NUMBER ONE SPEED. I'VE BEEN BUGGED ABOUT SOME FAN NOISE WHICH I'M SURE WOULDN'T BOTHER OTHERS BUT DID ME. I WENT TO RADIO SHACK AND GOT A PACK OF GROMMETS. I USED THE SMALL 5/16 GROMMETS IN THE FAN HOLES WHICH FIT NICELY AND USED ANOTHER ONE BETWEEN THE FAN AND THE AMPLIFIER CASE. I TOOK OUT THE SPACERS AND THAT DID IT. IT IS AS SILENT AS IT CAN BE AND NO MORE MILD METALLIC WHINE. I'M HAPPY. Hello, all. I had a hard drive go down and got a new computer with Windows 8 which is very cool. However, I am unable to download new firmware to the K3 with the P3 connected and turned on like I was able to do with Windows XP. [Elecraft] Noise Reduction
I, too, have not been impressed with the NR algorithm in the K3. However, with the latest firmware 4.51 I have noticed a distinct improvement in the ALC action as well as the NB and NR in the K3. I use both for SSB and CW in working DX and find noticeable improvement in S/N. I use NRmF5-1 most of the time with AGC DCY SOFT, AGC HLD 0.20, AGC PLS NOR, AGC SLP 008, and AGC THR 012. With these settings in my K3 I have been very happy. Of course the CW Text Decode doesn't work as well as it has in the past, but Wayne and Lyle are working on this. I have own a FT5000 and found it to be a very excellent performer. I, too, think the NR in the FT5000 works better than the K3 but I found the 5000 clumsy in other areas and did not like the size, weight and band scope in the yaesu rig. I sold the FT5000 and went back to my K3 and have been a happy camper since. The great thing about Elecraft is that Wayne and the crew will continue to make the K3 and the NR better and better and I will be able to make the modes and improvements myself and put the radio in my 'Rose' case and haul it off to Hawaii every February just in time for the ARRL CW World Wide contest. [Elecraft] KX3 Encoder Noise
Got the new KX3 finally. Took about 4 hours to put it together and calibrate the radio. Impressive. With small laptop power supply able to get 10 watts easily. I experience the encoder hash for the first time yesterday. I had a rather long QSO with local ham and after signing I noticed the scratchy hash noise with tuning the VFO A. The heat sink warmed up a bit after the SSB QSO but not too bad. I tried the radio on several bands and the encoder noise was present. I turned off the rig. Later that day I remembered turning AFX MD to the off position. I went back to the rig and turned it on. The Encoder noise was still present. I truned AFX MD back to the Delay setting and the encoder noise disappeared. I wonder if others have noticed this. Sounds to me like this is a software issue and should be able to be remedied by firmware update. Overall very impressive rig. It sounds like it will be my rig to take to Hawaii in February with the small vertical antenna, all easily carried in the suitcase. [Elecraft] Annoying Contests
Hello to the group. Well, what can I say. I've been a ham for many years but have never worked a CW contest before. Well, I've had the opportunity to spend some time in Hawaii and I just happened to be here for the ARRL CW contest. I took the K3 and Buddipole antenna with me to Hawaii. I was suspect about the Buddipole antenna but my friend KI0KB insisted that I take his with me. The wife and I are staying in a Condo on the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island north of Kona . I setup the antenna outside the condo next to a lava field next to the golf course. It has the 8 foot extension on the tripod base and I used the 9 foot whip with two counterpoise wires out into the lava field. I took the RigExpert AA-54 with me and it was easy to prune the coil for 40 meters. For 20 through 10 meters I adjusted the counterpoise for 20 meters and used the antenna tuner in the K3 to get the best swr on the bands below 20 meters. What can I say. The K3 worked like a charm. Being in Hawaii is a bit different in that you are the DX and you try to work stateside. My CW was a bit rusty but that's one of the beauties of the K3. It does a very good job of decoding CW. So when I would miss a letter of the call the K3 would catch it and I was good to go. I have the 5 pole 500Hz CW filter in the K3 and the receiver was amazing. I had 20 over Japanese stations right next to Stateside stations and was able to copy them without all the hash and inter-mode despite the key clicks from you know where. I had a ball. You know why the K3 works so well? It's because Wayne and others are active hams and like to operate. Wayne likes Contests! Anyway, I again have to thank Elecraft for putting the fun back into the hobby. To think I could travel to Hawaii with a K3 and a Buddipole and have so much fun. BTW after the contest I was listening of 20 meters SSB and there was Sabu VU2ELJ. He finished talking with a guy on the West Coast and I called him. He was a S-2 with me but I gave him a call. Guess what? He came right back to me! I've never worked India before but the K3 and the Buddipole vertical got through from the lava field, ha. [Elecraft] K3 Error 00013
Hello to group. Wanted to give some follow up on above error code. This code was generated doing a Synthesizer Calibration on new K3. I wasn't able to find much on this on the reflector and naturally it was a weekend. Then I remembered Greg AB7R. He had helped me in the past with my first K3 and so I gave him a call. He was in the middle of studying for an accounting final. He was gracious to listen to my tale of woe and of course he was able to pull up the info on his computer regarding the error codes for the VCO MD Calibration. It seems that if the error code is low one has to squeeze the windings on T1 on the Synthesizer board together just a bit or if the error code is high one needs to separate the windings slightly. Anyway, I pulled off the synthesizer board, opened up T1, and moved the windings a tiny bit. I closed up the toroid, put the synthesizer board back in and vol la, it calibrated as it was supposed to without any errors. I did e-mail Gary Surrency and he promptly e-mailed me with more info. Once again this is what makes Elecraft such a special product and company. We get to fix things ourselves and get answers to our questions rather than told to send the radio in for repairs. Hello to all. While constructing new K3 during Synthesizer Calibation I got the above error code toward the end of the calibration sequence. Anyone familiar with this? Also I notice a jumper on connector J64A 'W4'. Was I supposed to remove this? I don't recall seeing it before with other constructions and it is not in any of the pictures in the construction manual. I have great K2 with the following options for sale: KSB2; K160RX; K60XV;KNB2; KDSP2; KAT2; FDIMP;KIO2; and KBT2-X without battery. The K2 is in excellent alignment and plays as well as IC7800 according to Sherwood tests. I also have the matching EC2 enclosure with the KPA100 and KAT100-2 which matches beautifully with the K2. Both units have the latest firmware and include 60 meter coverage and the Transverter Option. I want $1200.00 for the K2 and $500.00 for the EC2 with KPA100 and KAT100-2. Am I the only one who find it difficult to use the Noise Blanker and Noise Reduction controls on the K3? Maybe it can't be improved but it sure doesn't work as well as the Ft5000. [Elecraft] NB and NR algorhythm
No nit I have with the K3 is the Noise Blanker and Noise Reduction algorithm . Is there any possibility of making these features more linear so that by holding down the NB or NR buttons one could adjust them in a linear, ie . 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 etc. manner, like is done in the FT5000. If the NB and NR features could be improved I might use them. As it is now I hardly ever do. [Elecraft] k144XV Rocks
I'm sure this is old news to many K3 users with the K144XV installed in their K3 but as Wayne mentioned quite some time ago on this reflector the K144XV 'Rocks'. I have never operated 2 meter SSB before and had the pleasure of installing the 2 meter option to a friends new K3. The install was straight forward and I again marveled at the thought put into the design and placement of the K144XV in the K3. I downloaded the latest firmware after I setup the phase lock calibration and tuned the band. Mind you I had a 2 foot handitalkie whip on the K3. I turned to the 2 meter calling frequency and low and behold there was a friend talking to a guy about 50 miles north of us. Guess what? I could copy both sides of the conversation and when I broke to call my friend he told me to stand by and when he came back he introduced me to the other party of the qso. I didn't think there was anyway that this guy in Wyoming could copy me but he was copying me 100% about an S5. Needless to say I was shocked. Granted he had a tall tower and 11 element 2 meter antenna pointed my way but still...There I was with a dinky little vertical whip sitting in my basement running 10 watts and talking with this guy 50 miles to the north in another state. The bug struck and now I too ordered the internal 2 meter option for my K3 SN 176. Who knows maybe I'll get into moon bounce, ha. Anyone have any suggestions for a 2 meter amplifier for the station? [Elecraft] K3 P3 and SteppIR controller
Good afternoon to the group. How do I configure the K3, P3 and SteppIR controller so that the K3 P3 will cause the SteppIR to change bands. [Elecraft] FS: KX1 and Accessories
I have for sale a KX1 with KXB 30-80 Meter Adapter; KXAT1 Antenna Tuner; and KXPD1 Plug-in Keyer Paddle. The radio and accessories have been compulsively built and all work exceptionally well. The transmitter puts out 4-5 watts on 80 and 40 meters and 3-4 watts on 20 and 30 meters into 50 ohm load. I want $450.00 plus shipping for all.
