It's basically a measure of how low-low-low - much lower than the speaker impedance - the output impedance of the amp is. A good damping factor helps control inertia effects in the speaker cone - helps give you "tight bass". - Jerry KF6VB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

There is usually a marking on the magnet face indicating the impedance. While I've modified several 2-ohm units to a higher impedance, it's more fun to watch the expression of the flea-market guys as you pull out a Phillips screwdriver and open case after case looking for 4 and 8 ohm ones. All of this is totally un-necessary. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Everything Steve says about the Motorola HSN speakers is true with the following caution: Many found at hamfests are 2 ohm speakers while amateur receivers and transceivers for the last 60 years have required 4-8 ohm speakers. [Elecraft] Diversity speaker set for sale
For Sale: matching pair of Motorola HSN6003B external speakers for K3 with diversity mode. These are the version of the classic Motorola communications speaker, designed for use on police motorcycles. Besides being waterproof, which isn't a real need for use with the K3, they have superior acoustic characteristics, as well as a top-mounted cutoff switch and the superb factory mounting bracket. These two were purchased new, and then wired such that they connect via a standard 1/8" stereo splitter adapter (which I will include). Used them on my K3 in a smoke and pet free environment, until I had to re-do the shack and there was nowhere to place them. Plug-n-play for the new happy owner. $50 for the complete setup plus shipping, which I am guessing would be ~$17 USPS Priority Mail.
