Ted,

If you do decide to go the K2 route with the KPA100/KAT100, you might consider
putting them _both_ external in one package via the EC2 enclosure.

Check Alan W3DVX's site:

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Options

2015-09-07 Thread Kenneth Christiansen
Hi Ted and the group

I built my K2 in the spring of 2000 and put in most every option that was
offered. I had the KAF2 first and kept it when I bought the KDSP2. I am glad I
kept it as after a year or so I went back from the KDSP2 to the KAF2. I just
never did like the sound of the KDSP2 and after I went back to the KAF2 was
never sorry. I now have my K3 and KX3 so gave my K2 and all accessories to a
local high school radio club after using it camping for 13 years. They are
still using it and having a good time.

73 and good luck. Audio reception is personal so I have no way of knowing what
would work out best for you.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Options

2015-09-07 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dauer,

If you operate mostly CW, you will find the KAF2 quite adequate.
But if you operate SSB in crowded band conditions (contests mostly), you
will want to go with the KDSP2.

Both have the Real Time Clock included.

That's the set-up that I have and have been pleased with it (the rig
never leaves the house). Too bad the antenna setup here is nowhere near
what the rig deserves.

The K2 is still handy for Field Day.
Until recently, our QRP group was almost 100% K2s.

A KX3 has since made an appearance, and one fellow brings his K3.

Maybe it would be better to say that the K2 design is almost 20 years old.

I have built every K2 option there is. Definitely the KDSP2 is the way to
go. If you are going CW only, the QRO options are not needed, unless you

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Options

2015-09-06 Thread Chuck Teague via Elecraft
I've got to agree with Jim. I have both the K2 and K3. I enjoyed building
my K2 as much as anything I've done in ham radio, and I still find ways to
get in there and mess with it. It is a fine radio, BUT--the K3 is better in
every respect IMHO. There are great bargains in used K3's coming on the
market almost daily.

However, if you decide on the K2, I would go for the DSP over the KAF. It
is more versatile, but does have a different sound.

I notice that both options have the real time clock. My question is what
does the KAF2 option do
that the KDSP2 option doesn't do? Or, is there any reason to have both

I suggest you return or sell the KAF2. You can install EITHER the KAF2

agree it is superior to the KAF2, although the KAF2 works pretty well if
you are operating mainly CW.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 options KDSP2 KAF2

2007-05-26 Thread Don Wilhelm

Scott,

Unless you do quite a bit of physical modification to the K2, you cannot
use both of them - they both fit into the same physical space.

The KDSP2 has filtering with more selections than the KAF2, and adds
noise reduction, and other neat functions unavailable for an analog
filter such as the KAF2.

I prefer the KAF2 for CW because it is somehow easier on my ears than
the KDSP2 - hard to explain, that is a very subjective assessment. But
for SSB, the KDSP2 wins hands down - the KAF2 only provides a low-pass
filter for SSB while the KDSP2 has several quite usable functions as
well as filtering in SSB.

The KAF2 and KDSP2 cannot both be installed in a K2. They use the
same connector and provide some of the same functions (clock and
audio filtering). However, the KDSP2 has beat cancellation and noise
reduction plus there are more filter settings, which can be varied
via the menu.

Scott,
Even if you choose to install the DSP, the current draw of the KAF2 is
lower, so you may want to keep it to swap in for those situations if you
do much portable operating. The KDSP2 can be turned off, but it starts
up back on again when you turn your K2 off and on.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Options - when?

2006-03-31 Thread Chris Kantarjiev
I've just added KNB2, KSB2 and KAT2 to s/n 3641, a basic CW K2.

KNB2 requires access to the top and bottom of the RF board - easy,
just the top and bottom cover.

KSB2 requires the same access - some of the work is a little more
crowded (just like the KSB2 itself). It *also* requires that you
add some components to the front panel board (and, while you're in
there, ground the mic jack, too!).

KAT2 requires that you remove the heat sink, which means fiddling the
PA transistors. You might want to put the aux RF connector in now,
if you have it already.

None of it was at all difficult.

Ron makes a good point, although I wouldn't consider it to be intimidating, it
is a pain to get the heat sink back on. The finals are held by screws which are
difficult for fat fingers to keep in place (I finally realized that I should
use a piece of electrical tape to hold them down). Also, make sure you re-test
the finals for shorts to ground. I try to consolidate my trips under the heat
sink as this is my least favorite part of going under the hood.

The only disassembly anyone has grumbled about that I've seen is in removing
the part of the bottom cover used for the final amplifier heat sink, since
some hardware is attached to it. I have done it many times without any
bother, but some folks find it intimidating.

[Elecraft] K2 Options - when?

2006-03-30 Thread Fred (FL)
Hi -

As I just finished K2 #5422 Control Board, and Front
Panel ( got good AOK resistance checks) - I'm
wondering
as I start on RF Board - just how much REWORK is it to
add NOISE BLANKER and SSB OPTION to my K2, after the
base K2 is completed?

Is it a major take-apart operation, to add these
options after the base K2 is up and running and all
buttoned up in its case, etc.?

I guess I'm fearing having to dissassemble circuit
boards, and take all stuff back apart - just to add
options. I can't imagine having to take the RF PCB
back out - once its all in and running.

How hard will it be OR should I add the complexity of
NOISE BLANKER and SSB OPTION, now as I build the basic
K2?

Thanks,
Fred N3CSY

Build the basic rig, make sure everything works FB, then add the options.

NOTHING requires pulling the RF board out. The Elecraft enclosures let you
get at everything by just pulling individual enclosure panels. The most
complicated disassembly is in the front panel where the control and
front-panel boards are stacked, and it comes off as a unit.

The SSB and Noise Blanker only require removing one part of the bottom
cover. Very easy.

The only disassembly anyone has grumbled about that I've seen is in removing
the part of the bottom cover used for the final amplifier heat sink, since
some hardware is attached to it. I have done it many times without any
bother, but some folks find it intimidating. The only options that requires
you remove that part of the cover is to install the 160 meter option board
and, if I recall correctly, the K60XV interface that provides coverage of
the 60 meter frequencies available for Ham SSB and an optional low-level
interface for the XV50, XV144, XV222 or XV432 transverters.
