I got a new computer awhile back. I hadn't attempted to load the drivers
software until now. I would like to get my K3 to the latest firmware update
and also play with my new XG3.
The Elecraft sheet for the USB to Serial Converter says to look at the
computer's Device Manager to find
Have you plugged the KUSB in yet? It won't show in the device manager unless
it is actually attached.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your answer, but every USB-to-Serial

I guess I -should- have been more specific. I meant that the KUSB needs to
be plugged into the computer, before it will show up in the device manager
-on the computer-.

Hi Phil (WA7URV),
Click on start.
In the typing window that has search etc in it, type device
manager without the quotes. This brings up a Device Manager window.
Look down the list to the line Ports (COM LPT). Double click on
it to expose all the COM and LPT devices. Leave this window open
Hi
I have found that the Cables Unlimited #USB-2920 works well with my K3. I
wanted a cable specifically USB 2.0 and Vista compatible. I have a XP
laptop and my desktop is Vista I also have a OQO palmtop that runs Vista.
This adapter looks somewhat like a flash memory drive with a USB
the external USB/serial converter that
Dick referenced.

I have used a USB-Com adapter for keying CW on the K2 using N3FJP contest
software. Keying is generally smooth, but occasionally some dits and dahs
get stretched a little bit due to busy windows tasks in the laptop.
K1EL's WinKey CW Keying Kit offers a good solution for using the USB port
As part of the serial command set, the K2 allows the computer to send
data strings which are sent as CW. The message is something like
KY CQ CQ DE WA4FIB K. It works quite nicely! I just wish more
computer programs used it.

Anyone know of a good, inexpensive USB to Serial Converter preferably that
does RTS/DTR for PTT and CW keying? I need one for a second port for my
Lap Top which has only one serial port.

Hi
Jack,
I have used MixW for keying CW and don't notice any difference between a
real serial port and a USB to serial port. On some programs, like N1MM,
the K1EL keyer does a better job than the program without it.
