Lou,
The charging mechanism for the KBAT2 is specifically for the SLA
battery. It may work for the LiFePO4, but that is just a guess on my
part based on the terminal voltage.
Secondly, you should not exceed 15 volts, so a 4 pack of Li-Ion exceeds
that voltage.
Then there is the matter of
I'm looking at current options for K2 battery operation. I built mine 20 years
ago and never got the internal SLA option. I always used an external battery.
I see the KBAT2 is still available but wonder about some of the newer battery

I ran my K2/10 and K1 from my RC batteries for years. Mine were only 2000mAH.
When they started sagging for RC, I used them for the radios where peak current
draw was dramatically lower. I ran the rigs at 5 watts as Don mentioned. The
signal was clean and at that power level they would barely

It should work fine, especially if you keep the power to 5 watts or
under. Set the CAL CUR parameter at 3.50 Amps to avoid HI CUR warnings.
If you try to run at 10 watts, the IMD will be reduced and the current
draw will be excessive.
Remember that the K2 tries to produce the power

I have some 3 cell LiPo batteries normally used for RC aero models and I'd
like to try these externally with my K2. The batteries are 3.7V per cell

I do of course have a suitable charger for LiPo batteries.

Good afternoon all, I have the battery from Elecraft for my K2 and I charged it
for 16 hours using my Aston RS20M. The voltage reading from the Astron supply
using my Fluke 179 was 13.78 volts and the K2 was reading 13.3 volts. My

Mike,
Your battery is not fully charged 13.3 volts is just not enough to fully
charge the battery.. If you are going to use your power supply to
charge the battery, you will have to increase your power supply voltage
to 14.1 to 14.3 volts - there is a pot inside the Astron.
The battery does

Sorry, but there is no good cure for your exhausted SLA battery. They

The charger that the A A Engineering Smartcharger is based on appears
in my 1994 ARRL Handbook at 27-16. It claims to be an update from the

It uses the Unitrode UC3906/UC2906 charge controller.

Hi, Bruce:

ways, as illustrated to the responses to your post.
After going through the same thoughts you are going through I resorted back

Hello all,
Is there a simple off the shelf model of battery charger which I can

I'd prefer not to drill a hole in the rear apron, so I'm looking for a

What have you found that
Bruce,
The answer is yes. There are several choices, but here are two basic ones.
1) Use a power supply that you can adjust upward to the 13.1 to 14.3
volt range to power the K2. The internal battery will charge, but it
will take a long time to come to a full capacity charge.
2) Make a

I have used the Battery Tender as well, the smaller one for the K2 and a

You can't use the existing K2 power jack to charge unless you remove some
components, as because of the voltage drop, the smart charger will be
outwitted and overcharge the battery. So,

This may have been answered before, but I just recently purchased a
pre-owned K2 and have installed the battery into the rig. In
reading the manual, it is noted that the battery wants 13.8 to 14
volts to charge fully and using a voltage less than that will reduce
battery life.

What a difference! Either the original battery wasn't a winner or the charging
