Just an update to let you know that I decided to migrate from
Org-mode+LaTeX to ODF-and-related, particularly because of LPPL+GPL
incompatibility, caused by LaTeX and related projects and because
ODF-and-related are easier for the other people to participate and see
the changes (no need to compile a .pdf nor to download 4 GiB of software).

ODF 1.2 (which is used by default at least in LibreOffice 5) is good and
offers many features similar to Org-mode, including adding files to each
other, interacting with spreadsheets (look for "relative DDE link"), and
also offers bibliography/reference manageemnt, along many other things.

Although I do want to point out that you might want to go to View ->
Disable "Show figures", so that LibreOffice Writer .odt documents are
more editable and less slow.

Also, note that you must recommend people to use LibreOffice to open the
files. Microsoft says to have support, but it's not excellent.

You may also want to import other .odt/.rtf/.doc/.docx files inside the
main one. The tricks are that if you do so using "Insert" -> "Section"
and tick "Link", the inserted section will use the main document's
styles, not their own. Besides, for these files, since they *do* have
notion of what is a "page break", then they will inevitably start in the
next page. Also, inserting them this way may replace or add document
metadata/properties (look in "File" -> "Properties"). at the same time,
some files that you want to add are actually drawings made in
LibreOffice Draw. In all the cases you might want to keep their own
styling. To do this export them to .pdf.

I use this:

"Figure"/"image", tick the box that has "Link" and select the image that
you want to insert. Do this for each .png image.

The "link" options are important so that the main document picks any
change made to the .png image, otherwise LibreOffice will insert the
entire image in the .odt, which will also make it more heavier to attach
in e-mails (but requires the other person to also have the linked file
in the same place).

A caveat of the manual .png insertion is that if a .pdf happens to have
more or less pages than the last conversion to .png, then you will need
to add or delete the related links and their corresponding figures in
the main .odt file. If someone has better solution please share.

Additionally, one can't do "Insert" -> "OLE Object" to insert .odg or
.ods files because these *cannot* break across pages, and don't look
good when printing. This OLE feature wasn't made for printing purpose,
but to facilitate editing without leaving the same program. If I recall
correctly, it's a Microsoft kludge.

As for tabular/table results produced by R, use and abuse of
`write.csv'. Besides, make R output graphics to a .png image (use the
`png' command/device). For all of this, write an .R/.r file and use
Rscript to run it.

The R-produced .png files can be inserted in the main .odt document I
described earlier, no need to repeat the explanation. What you need to
tweak in the `png' R command/device is the `pointsize' and `res'
arguments. Something like this would do:

Now you ask, how to insert the .csv files in the main .odt document as
tables in a dynamic way (such that if the .csv contents are changed by a
external application, LibreOffice picks the modifocation)?

To partially answer that question, I suggest you to make a new .ods
spreadsheet set/document, and for each .csv, use "Spreadsheet" ->
"Insert spreadsheet from file", select the .csv, enable/tick "Link",
save the .ods. With that done, go to the spreadsheet/tab in LibreOffice
Calc that you want to insert in your main .odt, click on the square
between the column name A and which is above row name 1 (this will
select the entire spreadsheet), copy (Ctrl + C), and Ctrl + Shift + V in
the .odt, select "DDE link".

To style the table, do it in the .odt document, not in the .ods
spreadsheet. Particularly, if you want to make tables with consistent
formating, make the first example

I verified that "/tmp/odt-21540L0A/meta.xml" and "/tmp/odt-21540L0A"
don't exist.

Side question: how do we debug this problem? Setting debug-on-error
doesn't help.

At first glance I would recommend you to keep using free/libre software
only, and advocating for it where you live, work and study. But please
read on...

... Now this is a tricky challenge. Not that difficult, but as far as I
can see these are the options:

a) worst: make the compromise and use these non-free tools in your
   computer (the same applies when using a virtual machine or a
   container), because all-in-alll, it's still your personal
   computer. Besides, the virtual machine or container can misbehave and
   impact your real system or personal files.

   You will still have to deal with side-effects caused by loss of
   control over your own computing, let alone the need to learn
   how to use that non-free tool;

b) somewhat better, although slow: use another computer (or get one from
   a rent) to do the work, and only do the work with that machine.

   The same case described in the second paragraph of (a) applies here;

c) better: do it with only free/libre software, and perhaps even teach
   or show the people involved how to make use of tools that support
   your workflow. For example Software Carpentry has awesome
   collaborative material on the basics of VCS using Git and of
   statistics wih R.

   If you don't have time to teach, make use of a tool that eases *them*
   participating in their terms.

   As an example, I'm writing my final course work using Org-mode, LaTeX
   and TikZ/PGF (this last one is for graphics), and whenever I want to
   send a snapshot for review to my advisor I do so through making a
   .pdf, but there is even more...

   The .pdf files don't actually track changes, so I must go into the
   extra step of doing the following:

   Then send them both the .pdf and the diff file (the one which has
   .txt extension of course). And explain to them that the .txt is plain
   text that can be opened in plain text editor (usually called
   "Notepad" in Windows), and mention that it essentially shows the
   difference between old and new versions, and that:

   - Lines that begin with "+ " is new content;

   - ... "- " old content being removed;

   - ... "@@ -old_start,count_old +new_start,count_new @@" a line jump to
 given "old_start" line in the old file.

   With all that said, the advantages of .pdf files is that the advisors
   can highlight and annote/comment on these, save the changes and send
   it back to you (they can't change the structure or content of the
   document itself, but can at least give you hints).

With all the options I presented, there is still another issue which is
quite common at least in the college I study: the advisors don't
actually orient people that well here, so even if someone theoretically
decides to "suck it up and use non-free software anyways" this doesn't
stop the advisor from being too vague as to give comments such as "it's
not compliant with the institutional norms" (what exactly

That's very limitting indeed. In various GNU+Linux system distributions,
even the user-friendly ones such as Trisquel ([1]), allow each user to
have their own ${PATH}.

I cannot help you on solving Windows only-issues (not to be confused
with: Emacs or Org mode issues manifested in Windows), so I suggest you
to install a free/libre system distribution such as Trisquel ([1])
instead.

I guess that it's due to excessive subsections, or --- in Org mode
documents --- this can also happen if you have headings such as
"***" or similar exagerated structure.

The heading "***" by default is exported as an item list
(`itemize' environment), or as an enumerated list (`enumerate'
environment), depending on the heading level.

Good academic and writting practice tells that headings shouldn't be
more than four levels deep. In LaTeX (which is used for PDF export), and
its default `article' class, you can have `section{}', `subsection{}',
`subsubsection{}' and --- if I'm not mistaken ---
`subsubsubsection{}'. At least for the LaTeX `book' class, before
`section{}', there is `\chapter{}'. In all cases, those headings that
are deeper than four are exported as lists by Org mode when converting
to LaTeX and to PDF.

It could have been shorter, some other people might be able to help out.

There is a flaw though, since the branch from the 'html conditional
returns an absolute path, and I don't know if this is what you want, and
it of course refers to the Org mode original document as you asked ---
that is: it won't link to the object in the HTML that actually has that
custom identity.

Good to know people are more and more moving away from document writers
that tie them to speciific graphical user interfaces and going more
towards formats which are easy to read and edit even in plain text. ;)

Well, you only need LaTeX for exporting. But if you do want to go
immediately to teach him how to export to LaTeX or to PDF in the first
lesson, then: yes, you need LaTeX to export to PDF.

I have also been writing a guide for Org mode and LaTeX for researchers
and writers, it's currently in Brazilian Portuguese and isn't as broad
as the info page in GNU Emacs itself, see [1]. Also, [2] has a more
advanced example of a work being done using (mostly) Org mode but also
LaTeX, BibTeX, TikZ and abnTeX2.

On a related topic, I wish there was a way for Org to export BibTeX
references to other formats besides LaTeX and PDF.

I once relied on some package, org-bibtex to do the trick along with a
set of Emacs Lisp scripts that were run with Babel ([1]), but found out
that I was doing more Lisp programming and actually embedding software
(a kind of functional data) to my presentations (a kind of
non-functional data) than doing my actual presentation, and also decided
to not use it anymore because people who were new to Org mode documents
and not tech experts would ask me how to do the same thing in their Org
mode documents and I would have to present them the monster I
created. :S

Morever, considering the availability only in Apple's App Store, how
will users exercise freedom 1, which also includes the freedom to reuse
the adaptation in the same environment/device? This "retake' of freedom
0 in freedom 1 is also mentioned in [1].

Currently:

- BeOrg doesn't seem to be "open source" (according to the Open Source
  Initiative's Definition, see [2]), unless of course we're missing
  something and the full license text, copyright notice, license notice
  and complete corresponding source are referenced/mentioned or
  distributed when the app is used, which I see as unlikely;

- doesn't seem to be free/libre either, because it depends on a package
  manager which has no easy way to completely manage trusted signatures
  understood by such package manager and requires installation only of
  signed packages (this last requirement isn't bad, but the absense of
  the trust management feature makes it worse). This is somewhat
  analogous to the situation found in almost all manufacturer-provided
  smartphones with Android and bootloaders preinstalled, besides this,
  iThings also come with Restricted Boot (not to be confused with Secure
  Boot or with EFI/UEFI, for the differences see [3]).

such as "you must use this (non-free) software", please remind these
people that what matters is the content, not the tool in this case.

Besides, if they really want to go the "efficiency" route, they should

Interesting...

Is this really a requirement? Did you actually asked which formats they
support? Perhaps with careful negotiation, you might come up with good
outcomes. For example: support for sending your work as PDF, TXT or
HTML.

In the case of HTML, you can use any of these to convert your LaTeX file
to HTML:

a) htlatex "File.tex"; although I don't know if this one will do
multiple runs automatically.

b) make4ht "File.tex"; if I'm not mistaken, this last method automates
the various runs of mk4ht; or lastly

c) pass "htlatex" as the LaTeX command (`-latex=' option) in `latexmk',
see the texdoc for `latexmk' and for `htlatex' to know what to put in
the `-latex=' option.

Indeed, Pandoc is a way out ;)

I just would advise against converting from LaTeX to Word DOC.

I'd say stick to LaTeX and PDF.

This is important because: just like PDF, DOC (and also DOCX and
ODF-family) is sometimes binary file, but beyond that: DOC is not
standardized, and one can't edit a DOC in plain text editor, this makes
it difficult to read version differences for a given file (although it
can be used in revision/version controlled spaces, it still makes it
difficult for a human reviewer to read the differences).

Relying on these formats such as DOC and DOCX only serve to
make people more dependent on the non-free software behind these.

Finally, if writting collaboratively with someone else, either send them
the Org or LaTeX file anyways, or if they are reviewing the changes: either
make use of a revision/version control system, send them only the diffs
that come from the revision/version control system you're using, or send
them the HTML output of `diffoscope' comparing a PDF of a previous
version with the PDF of the new version.

For more information on the current caveats of using `diffoscope' with
PDF files, see my reply in [1].

The best approach for me is also to use something such as org-publish,
and a simple static site server such as GNU Serveez.

If you want server-side programming using GNU Guile, dynamic pages or
dynamic output/return of .csv/.json files, then the upcomming GNU
Artanis might be a good start.

I couldn't make use of it yet, but I heard that even GNU Guile has a
built-in web server (and if I read all these correctly, GNU Artanis and
GNU Serveez only make the usage of this built-in one simpler).

Also, in all cases I mentioned you'll be using the already known Scheme
language, which is somewhat similar to Emacs Lisp and has more
performance than most webserver software today.

Also, GNU Artanis allows you to use templates in pages or have a plain
HTML page that comes from a mix of HTML and Scheme.

I think one could make use of file synchronization server-and-client
software such as Rsync, SFTP (through OpenSSH) or Samba; or even some
version control system such as Git or Subversion, whice the version
control systems make collaboration easier and controllable through
access controls. Samba also allows control through access control but
you might have to set real user accounts in your system for making
changes in Samba.

Although I don't know if this would work in practice, another method
would be make use of the Library of Babel ("Org Babel"?) and make a
source code block that fetches specific events from known public Org
mode files). This would require a scripting language that is allowed to
run a file downloader, open the file and extract parts of it --- or
(optionally) call the Org mode function that extracts parts of files in
"#+include", but from the downloaded file ---, and also would require
the agenda processing to happen after the Babel block was done. I don't
know if this is currently possible, but I repeat that it would be an
interesting test.

Personally, I don't think running it inside a browser would be a good
thing... both for keyboard shortcuts, and also for possible issues of
non-free JS (or not-machine-readable free JS information).

However, it's good to have interoperability with other collaborative
editing tools, such as Gobby for which there is already an Emacs Lisp
package for that, and also Etherpad (although I don't know if there is a
package that allows connecting to this one).

Best one that worked for me:

- Computer running:

  - Either as root or as normal user:

- sshd with *only* key-based authentication.

  - As normal user:

- GNU screen;

  - emacs --daemon && emacsclient -nw;

  - Detach from current session.

Now in cellphone:

  - Use SSH client to connect to computer as normal user;

  - Reattach to GNU screen session;

  - Now you have GNU Emacs and Org mode, and also GNU Screen if you do
need to do some work outside GNU Emacs.

Also, with SSH, you have encryption. ;)

To tell Emacs Org mode that you want a .pdf, customize the
"org-latex-pdf-process" variable.

To do so, do, visit: [[help:org-latex-pdf-process]] and click the
"customize" link. Near the name, you will see a "Value Menu" buttom, it
has latexmk there.

Oh... Are you generating .dvi or .pdf?

Commonly, .dvi is generated by running: `latex [File path.]' or `latexmk
[File path.]'.

And, .pdf is commonly generated by running: `pdflatex [File path.]' or
`latexmk -pdf [File path.]'.

If generating .dvi, the "space" option won't work.

The grffile package is already included, in:

[[help:org-latex-default-packages-alist]]

The text above is an Org hyperlink describing the
"org-latex-default-packages-alist" variable.

However, grffile, as it is included, doesn't have any options (this is
indicated with the empty quote-unquote next to the "grffile").

So, for now, in your LaTeX document, do:

#+LATEX_HEADER: grffilesetup{}

... and insert the options for grffile between "{" and "}". For example:

#+LATEX_HEADER: grffilesetup{filenameencoding = utf8, space}

I'm also not a programmer, but I did notice this odd behavior. :)

This somehow happens to be problematic to me too, if for some reason the
inclusion of the file isn't made by Org mode itself.

For example, we know that "#+INCLUDE:" keywords at the start of the line
are Org mode specific includes, and you can place the file references in
the first argument with the literal characters (that is: no need to do
percent encoding/escaping).

However, hyperlinks (that is: those between "[[" and "]]") demand
percent encoding/escaping. But, it seems that the Org-to-LaTeX exporter
isn't translating the hyperlinks to something LaTeX understands (LaTeX
expects literal characters, and "%" is the start of a comment).

Also, as a final note, the default grffile inclusion in the Org-to-LaTeX
(and to PDF also) doesn't include the necessary options to make LaTeX
accept spaces and accents in file names. That's OK for compatibility
reasons, and if you do want to force it to accept such special
characters, use the grffilesetup LaTeX command with the proper grffile
options.

Personally, I like to go the safest route: remove special characters
from file names whenever I don't need them. I generally replace spaces
with underscores, and leave letters without accent. This also avoids
having to deal with the broken percent decoding/unescaping when doing
Org-to-LaTeX exports.

I think I know why, it seems that some email clients ignore the
"In-Reply-To" field, and just assume that the reply is in regards to a
matching "Subject" field.

Mx. Fraga's email messages *do have* have a "Subject" field, however,
strangely enough, the subject text doesn't appear in Gnus "Summary"
buffer, but the subject does reapear (in the message composition buffer)
if one is replying to the mailing list to his messages.

Also: I'm also using Gnus, but only Mx. Fraga's have this problem so
far. I also have seen other people using Gnus without problems. Don't
worry though, it's not that problematic. I would classify it as minor
because it can be investigated over time.

I *don't* know much about providing email services or hosting, but I
guess that the problem is between the email client and the service
provider of Mx. Fraga's email address.

Hi, you can find such information in the Calc Mode info pages:

Avoid the commands between parenthesis which start with "calc-" because
these are actually Emacs Lisp procedures --- if you would really need to
use such, you would have to write the formula as a Emacs Lisp notation
and as far as I know, we can't mix Emacs Lisp procedures together with
Calc commands in the same formula, like so:

vmax([2, 3, '(max 2 4)])

The example above would cause an error. 'max is a "native" Emacs Lisp
procedure that would return the maximum value from the values given.

The advantages of using (b) over (a) are:

- You have a split, friendly --- and probably highlighted --- view of

- Multiple formulas can be inserted simply by breaking a line. In the
  case of (a), you would have to manually insert "::" for each new
  formula for a given cell or cell range. Note that inserting multiple
  "#+TBLFM:" in order to apply multiple formulas to the same table at

Also, all the issues related to updates and compatibility would be
solved if more poeple used GNU Guix package manager. This way, GNU Emacs
can integrate Org in its core, and use the "1 release per 9 months"
cycle, and also could have package recipes pointing to arbitrary commits
if there is a critical feature or critical bug.

Also, GNU Guix users can make and use their own package recipes with
ease.

Lastly, now a bit more technical: Among other things, GNU Guix project
tries to make package recipes in such a way that the package recipe
being created or edited avoids depending on specific versions of other
packages.

I have just thought of some more advantages and disadvantages too.

* Strengths

** One less split in development effort

* Threats

** People who still refuse to contribute to GNU Emacs for some reason

I have seem people making completely separated projects from GNU Emacs
due to concerns of being required to assign copyright to the
FSF. However, first and foremost, I must add that I'm in favor of doing
such assignment, because FSF is a charity organization --- not just a
non-profit ---, and they, together with other organizations, do
community-oriented copyleft enforcement, not the
"average"/"extortion-based" copyleft enforcement.

One thing that I would like to test would be to ask the same people who
deny copyright assignments to the FSF: Would they assign copyright to
some organization if such organization were to offer them a 1 bi
job? Between the two scenarios, I don't see much difference, except that
FSF works for a free/libre and just/fair digital society, whereas the
"organization" works for its own interests and can kick all their
workers and these wouldn't be able to take their own copyrights/work
back.

I would personally try to avoid CloudFlare, because it currently forces
the site visitor to run non-(free/libre) software (automatically through
JavaScript).

And even if it's prooven to be free/libre, it currently doesn't tell
this to the user/visitor in a clear way (next to the place where the
script is, with a license, and address of complete corresponding source
in case it's currently obfuscated/minified).

However, if my agenda entries have no time, but of course have a date,
the notifications, noticeably for #A-priprity entries, don't evidence a
longer sound alarm. And might not even be displaying a pop-up for these
#A-priority events, because I never see such pop-ups when starting Emacs

So my questions are: Do you know a way to have notifications that:

- Vary depending on the priority of the entry.
- Accept timeless entries (no hour, minute, or second).
- Make sound notifications, also varying by priority.

Note 1: You might need to load "org-bibtex".

Note 2: "org-bibtex" only accepts some properties to be exposed to
org-capture, it's not an exact parser like "bibtex" package. As a future
suggestion: I would like to suggest "org-bibtex" to be improved so as to
take all fields parsed by the "bibtex" package, but I don't know how to
do that yet. This would allow non-default BibTeX entries and fields such
as the "url" field (which is already supported), and other ones such as
"urlaccessdate" (this one is used by ABNTeX) and "note" to be made
available transparently through org-capture templates.

Note 3: Each time a reference entry is found in a refere file, such
entry should be removed from the references list, so as to avoid such
reference key being matched twice, even if there is a repeated reference
file. This is currently the only control mechanism that exists for this
hack.

Note 4: As an improvement, I still have to find a way to use an
org-capture template without being required to bind such template to a
key, as this can conflict with other templates or keys. I'm accepting
suggestions for such as long as I can figure out how it exactly works.

Note 5: I'm not a programmer, so I'm slow on picking up programming
concepts or languages' syntax.

Note 6: You must evaluate the first source code block once for the first
time the file is openned and everytime you adapt/change/modify the
source code block (for both cases: unless you preset the
"org-capture-templates" to reflect the same behavior in your overall
Emacs setup. For the last case: you must also make sure that there are
no old duplicates of such items in "org-capture-templates" otherwise
they might cause obsolete results or always raise an error).

Note 7: You must evaluate the second source code block
(import-references) once before exporting if either the "Reference" headline is
empty, if the references inside "References" headline is outdated, and
if the overall document contains a broken link (this one will already
cause an error that will stop exporting if broken-links #+OPTION is set
to nil).
