Agree. Consider type checking in general as something good. Some errors
may be discovered before program is run because pieces simply do not fit
together. In the best cases a valid output is also produced for all
possible inputs and runtime errors never happen.

I assume one drawback/advantage is after the change if a component really
expects an unsigned range the user can easily connect a signed component and it
might take a while to find that bug.
