Further words on the subject.
A spokesperson for LACOTS (Local Authority CO-ordination on food and
Trading Standards), the controlling body for UK trading standards
offices, who are responsible for enforcement of CE Directives, said
recently

Federal Office for Post and Telecommunications
in Mainz, Germany made following statements:
During 1996 10060 sample units were checked or tested. This
figure does not onclude shipments stopped at the border.
67% were found OK or not suspect
matter is still
on-going, but is surely an indiacation that, in the UK at least, you
mark without testing at your peril!

In the UK the situation has been quiet since 1/1/96 but I think
things are changing. Enforcement in the UK is in the hands of
the Trading Standards Officers, but is complaint-driven.
The newspaper "Electronics Weekly" (19/2/97) carries a front page

I hear a very disturbing subject being openly discussed among several
of my European contacts. Distributors in Europe are saying th
e heard of specific situations where a company or person has
been fined or jailed for fraudulently placing the CE marking on
non-compliant equipment? What is the penalty for non-compliance? What
is the penalty for fraud? Is anyone checking? Is anyone getting in
trouble?
