Re: [PSES] UL1007 vs VW-1 Flammability ratings

2023-10-31 Thread Chuck August-McDowell
Hi Steve,

I think you meant UL 1007 Style wire and VW-1 flammability testing.
This is common in USA, Most UL 1007 Style wire is duel rated to Style 1569 also.

The UL standard for Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) is UL 758.
“UL Standard 758 Appliance Wiring Materials was developed to
consolidate general requirements for AWM, and standardize methods
of evaluation. The standard includes performance requirements and
methods for testing tensile strength and elongation, spark testing and
dielectric voltage withstand. UL 758 also regulates marking and labeling
of AWM products.”

The “style” number describes a construction that wire manufactures can make.
Standardization of AWM.
We use Style UL 1007 / Style 1569 for Internal wiring with details on
construction at the bottom of this note.

Generally, a manufactures datasheet for style UL 1007 / 1569 will note that it
is also marked “VW-1“ or
noted in compliance section Flammability / Reaction to Fire: VW-1

For an example google “Belden 9918” or “Alpha Wire 3055”

The Alpha wire marking is:
ALPHA WIRE E163869- RU AWM STYLES 1569 105C OR 1007 80C VW-1 300V 18 AWG ---

The UL Style 1007 construction is;
Single Conductor with extruded insulation
RATING 80 deg C, 300 Vac, Horizontal flame. Optional - 60 deg C or 80 deg C Oil.
CONDUCTOR 32 AWG - 16 AWG, Solid or Stranded.
INSULATION Extruded PVC, 15 mils minimum average thickness, 13 mils minimum
thickness at any point.
STANDARD Appliance Wiring Material UL 758.
MARKING General.
USE Internal wiring of appliances. Tags may indicate the following: 600 V Peak
- For Electronic Use Only.

Style 1569 construction is;
Single Conductor with extruded insulation
RATING 80, 90 or 105 deg C, 300 Vac, Horizontal flame.
CONDUCTOR 30 AWG - 2 AWG, solid or stranded.
INSULATION Extruded PVC.
Conductor size Minimum average thickness Minimum thickness at any point
30-10 AWG 15 mils 13 mils
9-2 AWG 30 mils 27 mils
COVERING Optional, Extruded PVC, 9 mils minimum average thickness, 8 mils
minimum thickness at any point.
STANDARD Appliance Wiring Material UL 758.
MARKING General.
USE Internal wiring of appliances or electronic equipment where not subjected
to movement or
mechanical damage. Tag may also indicate the following, "600 Volts Peak for
Electronic Use Only."

Hopefully that is helpful.

[THIS EMAIL IS FROM AN EXTERNAL SENDER]

Hi Steve:

I thought UL 1007 was the UL standard for wire. I was wrong. UL 1007 is for
prefabricated assemblies that are installed in the field.

UL 1007 does not mention flammability of wire insulation.

A UL standard for wire is UL 2556; it does not include requirements for surface
printing.

I suggest you examine the wire for surface printing. At the very least, the
surface printing will include the UL file number. Using this number, you can
go to the UL website and look up the file which will include the flammability
rating of the insulation.

If you are lucky, the surface printing will include the insulation flammability
rating.

Or, you can go to the wire manufacturer web site where you can find the wire
insulation flammability rating.

Or, ask the battery box manufacturer for a copy of his UL or CE report. This
*may* include data about the wire.

Boo! Happy Halloween! 

[PSES] 2 simple questions on EMC

2023-10-31 Thread Brian Gregory
Hi, 1. Our unit is passing by a whisker, under 1dB @ 30 Mhz in a 3m chamber
against SubpartB requirements. Can we expect margin to improve in a 10m
chamber? 2. It's lightly loaded in the chamber (10% of FL), we do expect the
peak to squash down a bit with full load; they do when going from zero load to
10%. 3. We were idly wondering about cable loop; the output cable (bundled
AWG #6) is 6' runs about 12" in front of the unit towards the antenna and the
balance of it is currently coiled up in a loose bundle under the test setup.
The standards don't say anything about cable routing, just that it should be on
the ground plane. I don't like it running 'in front' of the unit, but the lab
tech says that's pretty standard and not driven by the necessities of the test
setup. Is that standard for a radiated setup? Colorado Brian

Re: [PSES] [EXTERNAL] [PSES] General Product Safety Directive (GPSD)

2023-10-31 Thread Ted Eckert
Hello Amund,

The GPSR has these definitions. I recommend you use them as the basis to
determine if you are providing "consumer products" as covered by the scope of
the GPSR.

"'product' means any item, whether or not it is interconnected to other items,
supplied or made available, whether for consideration or not, including in the
context of providing a service, which is intended for consumers or is likely,
under reasonably foreseeable conditions, to be used by consumers even if not
intended for them".

"'consumer' means any natural person who acts for purposes which are outside
that person's trade, bushiness, craft or profession".

There is no clear line drawn between consumer and professional equipment, and
the GPSR is intended to cover professional equipment that is likely to be
purchased for personal use by some consumers. Products that fall into this grey
area may need to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. I would recommend that if
you determine a product is not within the scope, your technical file include a
clear explanation of why it is out of scope.

Best regard,
Ted Eckert
