You might try hanging a current probe on the output of the Gecko to see if
it is switching between run current mode and standby current mode when the
direction line is being toggled.
It shouldn't cause any harm, just more power used.

So I think I have the hardware setup - but now I'm confused on how to actually
setup PWM to control an axis. I noticed that the .hal file has some PWM
instances at the bottom, but they seem to be set for heaters. Should repurpose
one of these or create a new one? How do I create a new one,

pullup resistors (say 2K 1W)
