There are several:

Look on the Google for aluminum extrusions for enclosures: Several will
sell you lengths to ~21ft or cut to length.

For cost comparison purposes we have custom dies made in China for $900 and
anodized aluminum is about 2x the market price of bulk aluminum. Our
extrusions were anywhere from 2" - 7" wide and we generally had a pallet or two
made at a time.

Anodizing seems like an easy thing to have done in midwest USA. There
seems to be a plating/anodizing shop in most cities of over 100K in the
midwest.
Extrusions will be more difficult but there are a number of aluminum
extruders in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. The trick will be finding an
extrusion die that you can use or you will need to have one made. I
don't think they are that difficult to make and chances are that an
extrusion company can get you hooked up with a die maker.
The 80-20 company is not far from me and I know there is another company
that offers comparable extrusions in Fort Wayne as well. For whatever
reason there seems to be a number of aluminum extrusion companies along
the 80/90 tollway which goes across Indiana and Ohio. There are a
couple or large extrusion companies that make extrusions for RVs near
Elkhart. You can see the aluminum ingots stacked up outside the plants
right off the tollway.

So you probe down until the switch on the Z assembly touches the work,
and you use that Z level as your "top of material"? That sounds good.

Interesting idea. So you would use something like this (.hal pseudo-code):

Z-switch-in => motion.probe-input
((motion.motion-type != Probing) && Z-switch-in) => axis.Z.neg-lim-sw-in

I can't think of a reason why that wouldn't work.

It will mean the -Z soft limit is wrong since it is statically set to
the largest possible value in the ini file, while the actual hard limit
moves up and down as you load materials with different thickness on the
machine.

I wonder if you can set ini.Z.min_limit to the probed Z value as part of
your "find the top of material" subroutine.

I'm not sure how that would all behave, but i'd love to hear your results!

[Emc-users] Probe switch / limit switch

2016-04-12 Thread Jim Craig
I am helping a buddy build a plasma cutter. The z axis assembly we are
using includes a probe switch so that when the torch tip moves up a
slight amount relative to the normal torch position it will trip the
switch saying the torch is on the metal to be cut.

It is simple enough to use this switch as a probe switch and we will do
so. However I would like to use it as a z-axis limit switch when a probe
move is not being conducted.

Is there any reason I cannot use the motion.motion-type pin to disable
the switch as a limit switch during a probe move? It is stated in the
man page that it is a debugging pin.

Is there a better way to do this?

What say you?

Thanks,

Jim

That is what I thought I was getting.

But the ER20 doesn't really have room for a serious bearing, one that I
couldn't crush the balls in with a 10" crescent wrench. Any bearing
ball that would fit in that space would have to be .0625" balls maximum,
probably smaller. And if not crushed, the races badly brinneled at
least than the normal snugging up torque.

I wish I had some of your bigger "toys". ;-) OTOH, this has done nearly
everything I've asked it to do so far, including making and then
driving its own molding cutter about 4" across.

Thanks Ken.

I haven't yet experienced any of that, but ER-40's are way above my pay
grade as the biggest spindle I have is a 1 horse, spinning an R8 socket.
I do use a 10" crescent to pull these up once the spindle is pinned but
doubt if I've ever exceeded 50 lb/ft even when trying to keep a tap from
slipping. My spindle pinner is home-made, and any more torque than that
may shear the mounting bolts holding the block carrying the pin to the
clamp collar on the spindle housing. TBT, I didn't use a big enough
pair of bolts. 4mm's IIRC.

I did get a full set of 1-13mm ER20 metric collets just now too, so I
should be able to get a decent grip on the shank of most any tap my
spindle can turn. 3/8-18 and 10mm need lots of fractional turn pecking
so I'd best not try anything any bigger anyway. ER20 collets with
square rear sockets can be had, at seriously ohmygawd prices though.

Thanks Todd.

Techniks sells nuts that they claim are better than ball bearing nuts, because
of their "Powercoat".
http://www.techniksusa.com/metal/pwrctnt.htm
And they do tighten down very nicely, at least when new. After they've been
used for a few years I'm a bit skeptical. I've found the finish does wear off
of the collet contacting surface fairly quickly, I think the tightening
advantage comes more from the coating on the threads, that seems to last longer
than the part against the collet nose. Still it does wear off eventually.

How often should these things be replaced? We have some that have been in
service for 10+ years of multiple daily tool replacement. (and it shows.)

Worst tool holder/nut combo I've used were some HSK63F ER40 tool holders from
T-ToolUSA. We've had a lot of trouble with the threads on these nuts and tool
holders galling. One hung up so bad I almost couldn't get it off, tearing out
large chunks of thread in the process. And these were only torqued to 90ft/lbs

The command is "halcompile" but you should have no need to recompile trivkins.

If you have a parallel kinematics then trivkins is not appropriate.

2016-04-12 Thread ??????????
I have 3 axis. 3-DOF parallel mehcanism. I use the command: sudo comp --install
trivkins.c . The system shows that I have the wrong command? Do you know the
correct command?

How many axes do you actually have?

Andy, this poster may be useing a translator utility as I do not think
English is the original poster's first language.

On this side of the pond axes or axe's would be plural of axe, usually
used to chop wood. I am not particularly fond of axis's to describe the
plural of axis, but it may translate better to the original poster.

Or perhaps ask how many different driven directions the original poster's
machine can move in?

We are a bit short on what the real problem might be. I suspect quite a
bit of how LCNC is calibrated to the axis of the machine may need a
translatable phrasing.

Cheers, Gene Heskett
