Plenty---most commercial 'stepper motor contollers' are designed to be driven by serial commands, because that's easier to integrate in the industrial world. Galil, Oregon Micro are two that we used, but Google has over 7 million hits for stepper motor controller serial port. Such controllers

Lin Engineering sell a driver RS325, that takes serial commands using RS485 as opposed to RS232. This has the advantage of being able to connect multiple drivers to the same PC port. RS232 to RS485 adapters are available from several places, as well as USB to RS485 adapters
