No, normally the as delivered 7I90HDs are EPP/EPP, but they can be propgrammed

Hooking into this point.
Do you have a good instruction for flashing with rs422?
Is rs422 working at delivery state of the 7i90?

Sure you can flash the card via JTAG with Xilinx tools, but is really doing
things the hard way (Xilinx tools for writing PROM files are quite terrible
especially if you want to support relocatable bifiles as mesaflash does)

Mesaflash is the preferred way,but this requires a working host interface. Of
the avalable host interfaces in the 7I90 (EPP, RS-422 Serial, SPI), EPP is the
one most likely to be available to a user (Currently most if not all OS level
SPI drivers are so riddled with bugs as to be useless, while JTAG and RS-422
require special hardware)

This is why default 7I90 programming is EPP

PCIe parallel port cards are commonly available and inexpensive.
Contrary to the PCI cards, it seems the NetMOS based cards are the ones
that work with EPP connected FPGA signal generators. For me at least,
Core 2 Duo PCs with excellent latency and parallel ports are plentiful
and cheaper overall than any decent embedded platform that will need a
lot of fiddling to never really work quite right.

Mesa made the firmware open source, so have at it.

That's just the way it looks for here.

No, you can get PCI and PCIe parallel port cards at just
about any computer outfit (Micro Center, or eBay).
Any desktop PC should be able to accommodate one of these cards.

Rumors of the parallel ports demise are greatly exaggerated. People have been
saying it is dead for nearly 20 years, yet you can still buy new PCs and
equipment that have one without much difficulty. The new Linovo PC on my
office desk that was bought for doing Windows/cad work (no consideration for
needing a pp when shopping for it) still has a parallel port header on the
motherboard, even though the 64-bit Windows OS that came on it doesn't support
it.

If I ever find where he (Murphy) is hiding, he is so going to be cooling
out.

The reason I said 8 above is because I've only used 2 out of a bag of 10
I just bought this past year. And thought I had them stashed in the
same drawer with 15 or more assorted genders of db25 idc connectors.

Go rig some cable chain since today & tomorrow are the last days warm
enough to open the garage door for working room behind this lathe.

And that was a wasted day, no 3/4" EMT in the whole darned county, so I
had to make about a 35 mile round trip to a Lowes to get it. And by the
time I was back, it was TwoferTuesday at Gino's so all the way to the
other end of town to get two baked spaghetti dinners & salads.

But, 'sposed to have nice weather tomorrow so maybe I can get some holes
drilled and tapped in the back of the bed to hold the conduit and anchor
the fixed end of the cable chain .

Some mornings, its just not worth it to gnaw thru the straps & get up to
pee. :(

And from the descriptions it looks like any of them will do as I can
restrict the loadrt line to what I want, and the remainder is then gpio.
Its an elderly lathe, should there be a default I should try to write
once I've assembled the cable?
restricting the listing to spi shows:

gene@coyote:/lib/firmware/hm2/7i90$ ls 7i90_spi*.bit
7i90_spi_24xqctronly.bit 7i90_spi_sssvst8_8_8.bit

7i90_spi_svss6_8.bit 7i90_spi_svst2_4_7i47.bit
7i90_spi_svst8_12_2x7i47.bit 7i90_spi_svua8_4.bit

7i90_spi_svst8_4.bit 7i90_spi_svua8_8.bit

which is about 4x compared to whats listed in the 7i90HD.pdf. ATM I need
2 stepgens, a better pwmgen so I don't have to cobble it up to work with
a vfd in the hal file, and one encoder, maybe 2 if I was ever to put a
turret on it. Is there a preferred bitfile to load based on that?

Everything else I can cobble up in gpio, which there would be plenty of
considering the loadrt options passed at load time.

Which brings up a question thats been bugging me for a while:

Whats the difference between mesaflash, and mesaflash3. They seem to be
interchangeable when its a 5i25 on the end of the cable. But there is a
small difference in the codes size.

But, but but, mesaflash works on a pci interface only, or is that because
I've only used it against pci cards? --help says it can do both. And
the option list for mesaflash is quite a but longer than it is for
mesaflash3, as if the code has been made to autodetect the interface?

Mesaflash's option list shows the 7i90 as having 4 interfaces, but the HD
apparently has no usb:
--epp use EPP interface to connect to board, only for boards
with multiply intefaces (7i43, 7i90, 7i64)
--usb use USB interface to connect to board, only for boards
with multiply intefaces (7i43, 7i90, 7i64)
--spi use SPI interface to connect to board, only for boards
with multiply intefaces (7i43, 7i90, 7i64)
--serial use serial interface to connect to board, only for boards
with multiply intefaces (7i43, 7i90, 7i64)

The 7i90HD variant isn't there. But since I can make the cable, and both
have an --info option, I'll do that when I am up for the day.

After a couple hours of googling last night, it seems the linux spi
drivers are for specific hardware as I find no reference to useing an
epp parport to simulate spi. This mobo is now long in the tooth and has
no such hardware on it.

All in all, confusing. And needs more coffee to sort it.

Thanks Andy.

Re: [Emc-users] 7i90HD programming

2016-11-01 Thread W. Martinjak
As I have written:

   The bit files are in:

7i90/configs/hostmot2/

You need one of the 7i90_spi*.bit files.
Then you have to flash the card on your printer port with

sudo ./mesaflash --verbose --epp --device 7i90 \
--addr 0xd010 --addr_hi 0xd000 \
--write configs/hostmot2/7i90_spi_svst4_8.bit

Change the addr and the filename!
grep the addr from lspci -v.

The addr option depends on your system.
Maybe you can omit it and using the parport defaults.

You almost certainly want to use Mesaflash.
