Not sure about the reversing part i never tried either.
I work with everything maximized (with tiling) by default unless i
have multiple windows that tile in different sizes.

you can always assign a keyboard shotcut for that. I have 'alt+x' for
maximise|unmaximise and I've found it quite confortable
