I have not nuked the misc tree and started fresh yet but I have my
  doubts that will help.

I have no issues with other modules, including the non-shelf calendar
  module.

btw, I always do a cvs update before building reporting any issues to
  this list.

  UPDATE:

used the nuclear option nuked my e17 misc cvs trees. Fresh
download build. also deleted ~/.e/e/config. no build errors for all
  EFL, E engage.

still no engage module shown in e17 config panel. also cant load using

  does not contain needed functions.

what the heck am I doing wrong?

(all other modules work ok including calendar)

 UPDATE 2:

getting a little closer. found no directory in ~/.e/e/modules titled
engage. make install populates root account but not user (on my
system). copying items over from root changing groups owners makes
engage module appear in the config panel but enable causes E to seg fault.

strange, been using engage happily for months without issue.

have you used enlightenment_remote to set the theme? have you set it for

Re: [e-users] Question about the shelf?

I have experimented extensively with the shelf technology and look
forward to further development. It is just that usually I can see the
why and wherefore of some development but in the case of the shelf
technology I couldn't. If as has been suggested in another post it will
ultimately make module development and functionality easier then that's
 great.

As I said I was just curious. I figured that a group that produced e17
(which is the best UI around I feel) must have a reason for following a
specific path and I just couldn't see it.

modules as they were weer unable to be above windows or be sanely grouped or
controlled - each was its own kingdom and had to be separately tamed. they all
copied and repeated the same bits of code and were stuck on the desktop. the
gadcon/shelf thing frees them. they can be on the desktop or in a shelf. now
gadcon is in charge of remembering location and size of a gadget and the
modules doesn't have to bother. the layout algorithms are currently limited, but
this can be extended over time irrespective of the modules/gadgets themselves.
there is enough flexibility to be able to do almost everything you used to
before - except gadgets are stuck at an edge of the screen - they can be any
size and any position along an edge. unlike before it is easier to keep them
under control though.

For what it's worth I am amazed that a diverse group that is spread all
over the globe can do so much in such a small amount of time!!

:)

  Cc: enlightenment-users@lists.sourceforge.net

I am curious about the rationale behind the shelf or shelves.

  Previously

I was able to use the standard 'edit' feature of E to move a

  module's

display to any place I chose on the screen(s). Now, as

  modules are being

converted to work with the shelf technology I find that I

  have to either

stop using a module (say, the cpu temp module for example) or

  activate

it within a shelf. The shelves are restricted as to where

  they can be

placed and are limited to the edges of the screen.

As it stands, I find e17 to be one of the most well-designed and
functional interfaces I've seen. The shelf technology seems to be
introducing a degree of inflexibility that runs counter to

  the freedom

available elsewhere in e17. Am I missing something about the

  concept? Is

there an advantage that I just am not aware of?

  Just curious,

  Jim

The advantage is a much simpler codebase, with a lot more
shared code, making for much simpler development. This isn't
inherent to the shelves, but to gadcon, which is the new
replacement for gadman. gadman is what used to handle gadget
(the visible part of a module) placement on the screen, but it
had some design issues which are resolved by gadcon. The shelf
isn't inherent in the gadcon design, it's just the first
implementation of a gadcon container... from what I
understand, once the shelf is complete and all modules are
moved over to gadcon, raster will write up a few other gadcon
container types which will allow for all of the flexibility
that gadman had in module placement (someone can correct me if
  I'm mistaken here).

Re: [e-users] Keyboard, config save, twin view questions

2006-06-07 Thread The Rasterman
On Sat, 8 Apr 2006 15:05:05 + [EMAIL PROTECTED] babbled:

 Hello, great E guys

 1. Keyboard layouts question:
I want to have two layouts english and bulgarian, and to be able to switch
them with alt+shift. This is not a problem. I have configured it in the X
config file. But I also want every window (program, I suppose not possible)
out there to have its own layout, so I can write code in the editor in
english, then someone sends me a message in gaim, and then reply to him in
bulgarian, without the need of layout switch. I know its is possible because
on my previous computer it was working great. But I've killed it, and now on
clean install (previously have gnome installed and configured, and I was
using gnome-settings-deamon) it is not working. Is it possible to have this
feature enabled without the gnome bloat?

right now e doesn't do much at all when it comes to key maps etc. frankly -
i've never played with it - as my keyboards dont tend to change what keys do
what during the day :) i have experience with japanese input - but not
russian/bulgarian/etc. etc. so i don't really know where to start here - so for
now - this is a please send patches and explain to us whats going on thing :)
(how do you know what keymap to use/change to - does the app hint this? is it a
wm configuration thing. how to actually change keymaps with x calls etc. etc.)

 2. Config save to text file. Config load from text file.
A few days ago after I have updated, the E was crashing and a have to delete
my .e directory (later I've learn that only config have to be deleted, but
this is other story :-) ) but I've made lots of changes in the configuration
to suit my needs... and have to done them again, and wasn't happy.

So is there a way to dump the configuration, I'm happy with, in text file,
and the when something goes wrong restore it easyly?

enlightenment_remote - use it, write a script to execute it to set up your
options. it can also be used to query and extract your options. :)

 3. Last one:-). Today I have installed a second monitor, and I'm very happy
of the usabllity of the twin view and E... it is great:-) but have too
miscomforts: a. Is it possible to have the same modules on both monitors b.
When the mouse goes from one monitor to the other its coordinates are not
transferred corectly. The two monitors are setuped at different resolutions
(1280x1024 and 1024h768), so the mouse have to be remapped (don't know if it
is the correct word). When mouse goes from one monitor to the other its y
coordinate (in my situation) have to be multiplied by the ratio of the
vertical resolution of the two monitors. Now it is stays the same, a when I'm
on the big one and the mouse's y is more then 768 after transfer to smaller
monitor the mouse is lost... very distracting. But I suppose it is not an E
issue, but nvidia's/xinerama's. I'm using the xinerama in the driver (nvidia
6600 card on amd64) and have configured nv's twinview.

this is unfortunately not an e issue - it's x as it handles mapping of where
the mouse will cross between screens :(

 Thanks in advance,
 Greatings Teodor

Thanks for the reply. When I halt and restart e, the icons still don't
appear. Is there a cache somewhere I should delete?

are you using e's icon editor - or e_util_eap_edit? do you ahve up to date
cvs? i just changed an icon here and it worked. and there is no cache on
disk for the images, only ram. you dont have to halt and restart e - just
select restart enlightenment from e's main menu (or hit ctrl+alt+end).
 this will completely re-run enlightenment.

 Hi,
Has there been some changes to the handling of .eap files? I tried
changing the png pic used by firefox using the 'edit icon' option and
the icon no longer works?? I also tried changing the executable name of
another and that one doesn't work either??

restart e - you are basically just a victim of the over-happy caching of
evas that basically once it loads an image never checks the disk version
again as long as it is in cache or referenced. just restart e and bingo -
icon will be there. i probably should revisit the cache code and make it a
 little less aggressive :)

[e-users] e16 menu problem

2006-06-07 Thread Mario Negri
Hi,
this is my first post in this mailing list.
I searched the web but I did not find a working solution for my problem.
I installed the latest version of e16 from source on a slax based linux
distro installed on hd.
I installed e16 because I think is better than kde.
The menu are generated and work for root.
But since I use another user I started e16 with a normal user and the
menu are not generated and left mouse button click does nothing, but
themes are working.
I tried the regeneration function, purged cache, but nothing happened.
I copied root's menu to the user dir changing ownership, but the menu are
not loaded.
Can someone tell me how to solve this?

Thanks for your help.

Rebuild it from cvs.. works nicely here.

This is/was a bug in e_util_eapp_edit unless you have replicated it in the
internal editor.

[e-users] Standalone engage does not find the icon xapp.eap

2006-06-07 Thread Diego Fernandes
Hi everybody,

Does anybody know where is the default location for the icon to be placed?
i know it used to be in ${prefix}/share/engage/icons
and now it seems to be installed in
${prefix}/lib/enlightenment/modules/engage/icons
and engage doesn't find it
And what's the purpose of this icon anyway?

The engage module is not working either, it says: The module does not
contain all needed functions;but it may be due to the same problem of
the other.

enlightenment version: 0.16.999.027
engage cvs: 06/05/2006
OS: FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE-p1 i386

here is the output:

$ engage
move 128 894
am a system tray :) :)
ERROR: Engage could not locate default icon xapp.eap - please make install

Thanks for your attention.

to me, this indicates a mistake in the configure stage..

I run autogen.sh/configure/make/make install all as root (well, for the
stuff that I do build.. don't use engage currently)

looking at the output of make install it seems to only install items in

 /root/.e/e/modules/engage

nothing goes in usrer's home directory (~/.e/e/modules/engage). I copied
them there from root but still no joy.

it should get installed to /usr/lib/enlightenment/modules/engage

Im using the default install so have no such directory. I do have:

/usr/local/lib/enlightenment/modules

I also have a directory /usr/local/lib/engage/module which contains only
module_icon.png

but no sub-directory called engage. /usr/local/lib/enlightenment/modules
contains sub-directories for the std. e modules. engage is not one of these.
all my libs bins are in /usr/local (out-of-the-box install path).

perhaps we should let this thread die for now. thanks again for help.
