To specify, you will need you system to support the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap extension( glxinfo | grep GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap ). You also need either a AIGLX enabled X.Org server, or nvidia's|ATI's proprietary blob, both with a card that supports that particular extension. On the matter of XGL, quoting http://principe.homelinux.net/ ( a good read BTW ) "Xgl is [a] new X server architecture layered on top of OpenGL: it doesn't need X drivers anymore, but just OpenGL drivers for all its rendering. Current implementation of Xgl is Xglx. It's just an "hack" to see what Xgl is capable of." Read the last sentence of that quote at least twice. I would argue that running E17( remember, it's pre-pre alpha ) on top of an X server with features so immature( and a "hack" if it's XGL ), is pretty much asking for it. Patience is a virtue, wait for this technology to mature before you jump the GLX wagon. > - > Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Re: [e-users] beryl + e17: possible?
Bling does not provide expose like function, but Beryl yes. What I am thinking about since a couple of weeks/months is that it should be possible to make an expose like function + translucency without OpenGL support, but "only" Composite extension from the X Server. What I like in enlightenment it is his speed, small memory footprint, responsiveness and beauty. I make it run using xserver from X11R7 (no 3D effect only 2D acceleration) and that is enough and really fast. That is true that I would like to see functions like expose and windows translucency. I was waiting for such solution to happen and bling is a good step forward. As soon as I will have some times, I will try to code a patch to implement an expose like based on compositing and adding some functions to bling like translucency changes during windows movement. Unfortunatly I am pretty busy right now and it could requires some times except, if beryl or bang could run without Xgl ... The key issue with Beryl is that it is a full window manager, I believe that bang has extract some part of the code and ported it to e17, I just would like to avoid redoing the work that somebody has done. Slightly off-topic... The top-level e_modules Makefile stops when any module fails to build, but you can always compile the modules separately. Some won't compile, but most of them will. You can also just modify the top-level Makefile to continue in case of an error. HTH, Nick. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash.
