Couple of things to note: If the website is properly designed, it doesn’t matter whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit Java with a 64-bit browser. Since plug-in was dropped, it calls the program, so it’s running parallel to the browser, not linked like a chain. Which flavour of Java you need depends on how the applet each website uses was written. If done properly it should be able to run on either. Onto the nitty gritty of Firefox change over: * Firefox 32-bit won’t automatically be replaced by Firefox 64-bit, so you’ll need to set up an uninstall for the 32-bit. * If the 32-bit was the default browser, when it uninstalls Windows won’t choose another default. This will result in some odd error messages, like clicking a link in Outlook will trigger “Your company’s security policy prevents the completion of this action”. Opening Firefox 64-bit and setting it as the default browser resolves this in Windows 7, as does running a script to set it as the default (either as part of the install or after the install). Windows 10 you’ll need to go into the Default Apps. I haven’t found a script to automate this for Windows 10. * Any shortcuts set up by the user (for instance if they’ve pinned it the task bar) to the 32-bit version won’t be automatically uninstalled or redirected. The easiest solution is to manually delete them and recreate the shortcut / re-pin to task bar for the 64-bit version. * Some users needed to clear their cookies / browsing history to display some web-pages (for instance the IIP site). * This may be unique to us, but the 64-bit doesn’t mind the intranet pages, but doesn’t like getting the proxy settings from the local machine to access the internet. Setting it to auto-detect the proxy settings instead seems to resolve this issue. Can’t think of anything else right now. We push a 64-bit java to all workstations anyway, so yes?
