As another side note... I recommend NOT having X start when the system starts. This makes it easier to troubleshoot your problems because when you do a 'startx' you'll see the dump if it fails and at least your computer won't reboot itself. Otherwise try doing a 'Control,Alt,Backspace' to kill

What sort of computer are you using. With Man 8.2 AMD k6-2 (k6-3 also?) and via or some sis chipsets there can be some problems ( concerning vitual memory, a problem with the kernel I believe. This would be a possible source of your problem on a machine just upgraded where and a large amount of

I just don't understand why the video card and system works well with 7.1, but freaks out with 8.2. My video card is so old, I have no idea what it is, really. Try using the version 3 Xserver instead of version 4; it's an option during X setup. You can also change it using the system
