That's because newer versions of portage have autoclean set as default.

Two words: Evolution, Mutt.
I would like to have both setup sharing the same folders. This
way I have the calendar and everything that Evolution offers but
at the same time I can ssh in anytime and read my mail too. Me
wishes that I had caught Ralph's presentation on Mutt since I
can't get my
Evolution and Mutt peacefully co-exist using MailDir; that's what
I use--Most of the time I use mutt for reading mail. But some of
the time, it's nice to use Evolution for email.
If you want Mozilla mail as well I think you could set up an IMAP
server, which would (theoretically) let you use

Mozilla seems to be considerabley more reliable and I don't
think I'd have near the hassle of trying to recover my mail back
into the program if something went screwy.

Something similar happened the first time Evolution was updated
to 1.4 and I found the solution to that in the forums. Of course
there's probably an anwer to my current problem but I don't want
this happening every time there's and upgrade for Evolution.
