Re: [eug-lug].PHP FILES
In my experience, web *browsers* will show the source of .php files, if viewed directly. What you want is apache, the webserver; then put the .php file(s) into your webroot, prolly /var/www/html/ and then start apache and point your browser to http://localhost/coolfile.php and you're golden, so long as the .php file doesn't need anything else. To be precise, PHP is a programming language, which is generally compiled and run within a webserver, and is in-line with and/or outputs HTML for the client who is browsing it. Sometimes they are complex and use a database, for example, so the PHP file you're interested in might require more, server-side, than you're prepared to provide. If you copied the output of a page from some site, and saved it as somefile.php, you probably actually have the HTML output from that server, and can view it *without* running a webserver like apache, just point your browser to file://tmp/or/whatever/somefile.php or rename the file to .html and try that, if you have a problem. If you fancy saving [portions of] web pages you visit, I can suggest using mozilla, then selecting from the menu, File - Edit Page, whereupon you can cut out undesirable bits and resave the page as you like. It sounds like you're new to such things, as play is not usually terminology associated with .php files. If you mean some different kind of .php file, then sorry for this bother! Otherwise, you might want to be perusing http://tldp.org -- the howto's and faq's are superb! hope this helps, and enjoy playing around, Ben On Sun, 12 Oct 2003 22:48:02 -0700 Linux Rocks! There was another aspect I didnt mention... When you have a problem with your comptuer, you cant call up tech support (unless you've bought a support contract with one of the few linux support companies), but when you call MS or manufacturer support, they just waste your time anyway. Spend an hour on hold, then when you do get someone, they make you do a bunch of things that often dont help... With linux, There is a plethora of support (mainly internet related however), local LUG's, mailing lists, newsgroups, IRC, websites (google is your friend!) I often resolve small issues in less than one minute from a simple web search. Note: several years ago (when finishing my degree in user support) We were provided with a very interesting statistic (this was regarding to windows 95/98): 40% of tech support calls were resolved with Reboot your computer. just a guess, but now its probably restore settings from a few days ago. Support under linux may be unoficial, and rather adhoc, but Ive noticed that its much more effective. [EMAIL PROTECTED] MUSIC]# mv *.php /data2/MUSIC/*.mp3 mv: when moving multiple files, last argument must be a directory Try `mv --help' for more information In windows this works, but not with unix because of some subtleties. It is the shell and not the mv program that interprets the asterisks. In win/dos the shell is command.com or cmd.exe. The 'move' command gets a file mask *.php and recognizes that it needs to treat it as a wild card. In unix, you are probably using bash as a shell. The asterisks are translated before it is passed to the mv command. In dos move sees two arguments *.php and *.mp3. In unix mv sees as many arguments as there are files. Say you have a.php, b.php, c.php and alpha.mp3. $ mv *.php *.mp3 gives mv these arguments: a.php b.php c.php alpha.mp3 If there are only a.php, b.php and c.php, mv sees: a.php b.php c.php *.mp3 Use the rename command which is usually distribution specific. On some distros it is a C binary. On others it is a perl script (debian). Or do it yourself (however this won't work if there is a file with a space in the name): for i in *.php ; do mv `basename $i .php` $i.mp3 ; done Cory -- Cory Petkovsek Adapting Information Adaptable IT ConsultingTechnology to your (541) 914-8417 business [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.AdaptableIT.com ___ EuG-LUG mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mailman.efn.org/cgi-bin/listinfo/eug-lug
