Care to explain?

The only problem I can imagine is expansion/contraction. Just work the
coefficients and make sure you have enough space between batteries for the
coldest you’ll encounter, and that there’s enough room for the hottest you’ll
encounter. Certainly, copper bus bars have been around a long time.

BMW iX3 to introduce brand's fifth-gen EV power in 2020
BMW will introduce its most advanced electric powertrain technology yet in
2020 when it launches a zero-emissions version of its X3 SUV.

Set to be called the iX3, it will arrive as part of the updated
third-generation X3 range and be the first car to get all-new zero-emissions
underpinnings that are being developed for use in all of BMW’s
next-generation EVs.

Spy photographers have caught an i3X development car testing in Scandinavia,
where the range of its battery pack is being evaluated in conditions that
regularly dip below -10deg.

The electric powertrain of this car, which is based on today's X3, which
arrived last year, is evident from the lack of water vapour from tailpipes
as it drives away. In these sub-zero conditions, combustion engine tailpipes
almost always produce vapour.

BMW i3 and i8 might not be replaced

The sighting of an EV X3 so early into the future car's development cycle
shows that the platform of the future line-up is being engineered to adopt
an electric powertrain from the off. This is essential for effective
packaging to ensure cabin space is not compromised by the placement of
batteries in the car’s floor.

The iX3's structure will be a development of BMW’s CLAR structure, which
underpins the X3, as well as the latest 5 Series and 7 Series models and
will be used in the 2019 BMW 3 Series.

Although the iX3 will probably feature a grille-free nose to reduce drag,
it's overall design is unlikely to drastically differ from its combustion
engine siblings'. The BMW Group’s latest stance on EV design is to be more
discreet; Mini brand boss Sebastian Mackensen told Autocar recently that the
marque “doesn’t need to make a big statement” about EVs.

The electric architecture beneath the iX3 will be the most advanced put into
production by BMW. The iX3 will use two electric motors, one mounted up
front driving the front wheels and a second at the rear within the axle
assembly to drive the rear wheels. This set=up will enable torque vectoring
to enhance traction.

425bhp X3 M due this year as Macan Turbo rival

The electric layout will come as part of BMW's fifth-generation EV platform
and will be used in 11 further electric BMWs due to arrive by 2025.

Not all of those cars will adapt the twin-motor setup employed by the iX3,
however; models less concerned with all-wheel drive traction could adopt a
simpler layout, which uses a front-mounted electric motor in combination
with a fixed-ratio gearbox and so-called electric propeller shaft to channel
drive to the rear wheels.

Each of BMW's new electric models will have an 'i' at the start of its name
to signify its EV status. BMW recently patented a list of nine names
spanning from iX1 to iX9, although not all will necessarily be used because
most will be aligned with current models in the line-up.

BMW patented the i1 to i9 names back in 2010, before the i3 and i8 arrived.
The largest confirmed model for BMW’s future range is the X7.

The brand will also produce an electric version of the future 4 Series GT,
called the i4, in 2020 and an i5, which was previewed by the i Vision
Dynamics concept and is due in 2021.

[EVDL] EVLN: Artisan Z40 earthmoving haul e-truck

The Z40 electric vehicle has been recently released to the public

An international earthmoving vehicle manufacturer has unveiled the ‘first
ever’ all-battery-powered underground haul truck.

Developed by US-based company Artisan Vehicles and gold producer Kirkland
Lakes Gold, the 40-tonne Z40 electric vehicle (EV) has been designed to help
the North American mining industry cut emissions. It is also said to have
the smallest footprint of any 40-tonne truck on the market.

Artisan Vehicles CEO Mike Kasaba said the lithium battery technology is set
to change the mining industry “forever”.

“It’s clear that the mining industry is ready for the transformation that we
are enabling.”
Mike Kasaba, Artisan Vehicles CEO

“It’s clear that the mining industry is ready for the transformation that we
are enabling,” Kasaba said.

Kirkland Lake Gold CEO Tony Makuch said the Z40 has also been designed to
operate in spaces designed for much smaller trucks. “Being able to haul
significantly more ore in each truckload means more production with a
smaller truck fleet,” he added.

The release of the Z40 follows Artisan Vehicles’ A4 EV – a 1.8m long,
four-tonne load, haul and dump (LHD) underground mining vehicle. The A4 is
also powered by lithium batteries and has an ‘extremely power dense’
electric motor system. As well as reducing ventilation and cooling expenses
for mining companies, the A4 is estimated to have 300 per cent more
horsepower than an equivalent diesel LHD truck.

Additional specs

According to the company, the Z40 haul truck has almost twice the peak
horsepower of a comparable diesel machine. It produces zero diesel emissions
and generates only one-eighth the heat of its diesel equivalent.

It is equipped with four electric motors and comes with a battery swap
system, allowing the operation time of the vehicle to be extended to a
duration comparable to that of a diesel model. It is also said to reduce the
number of trips made around a site.

According to an Artisan Vehicles statement, electrifying vehicles and
equipment in the mining industry helps reduce the impact of making other
EVs, because it cleans up the process of sourcing vital components such as
nickel, cobalt, lithium and other metals.

“The Z40 will improve working conditions and create a healthier environment
for everyone underground,” the statement read.

Quarry sought additional information from Artisan Vehicles about whether the
haul truck could potentially be used in quarrying applications but a
response had not been received at the time of publication.

Maybe yours are different, but the steel bed frames I tried to drill years
ago took a long time and dulled my drill bits. They seemed to be made of
some weird kind of hardened steel. I finally gave up on them and bought
angle iron from the hardware store (which IIRC was pretty darn pricey).

A few potential problems exist.

Copper and nickel makes a pretty decent primary cell. So your bus bars will
corrode quickly in the presence of the KOH electrolyte and other moisture.

Saft's bus bars were nickel plated. You'll probably also want to use nickel
plated lugs for your battery connections.

If you use rigid bus bars of any kind, you have to mount the batteries so
thay absolutely cannot move relative to one another.

Do you have the Saft STM5-180 tech manual? It says, "The blocks must be
mechanically supported and must not be able to move in any horizontal or
vertical direction."

http://www.evdl.org/docs/STM5-180tech.pdf (pg 12)

In Saft's factory battery assemblies, the monoblocks were glued into their
trays.

You would want to plate your pipe with nickel after flattening it, and mount
the blocks as rigidly as Saft did.

BTW, don't forget to allow space along the monoblocks' long sides for forced
air cooling. This is also covered in the manual linked above.

An additional factor to consider is that the copper alloy used in water
pipes isn't always the best conductor. That may or may not matter in this
application.

One thing more I just noticed:

> I cut the clutch spline out of the clutch, and have a TH-400 yoke to
> weld it to for the motor-tranny coupling.

I may be misunderstanding what you're proposing here, and I'm far from an
expert on these matters, but I get the impression that you really should
have some kind of resilience in the motor coupler, to take the place of the
springs in the clutch disk. Have you allowed for that?

Maybe someone else here can explain this better.
