Joining Spyker, Vencer and Donkervoort, Carice Cars is another specialty marque from The Netherlands and their first product is a limited-run electric vehicle called Carice Mk1. It draws its styling cues from the classic Porsche 356 and has a body manufactured entirely from plastic. Tipping the scales at less than 350 kg (771 lbs) including the battery pack, the Carice Mk1 will be offered in two states of tune: 15 kW (20 PS) and 40 kW (54 PS). There will also be a Junior Version (for 16-year-old drivers) with just 4 kW (5.4 PS). The Carice Mk1 features a so-called backbone chassis with a central single thick bar running the entire length of the car which incorporates the battery pack and grants an ideal 50:50 weight distribution. Only ten units will be made and each will carry a starting price of 26,620 EUR (including VAT) but don't expect to get a roof because there isn't one, only a tonneau cover. For more money clients will be able to opt for a range-extending small capacity gasoline engine and there's even a hydrogen-powered version available. Order books will open on June 21. The swift automation, the cleanliness, the trained hands deftly fitting pieces together and watchful eyes inspecting every piece of the car, it's all quite impressive, especially if the vehicle is one you, as an observer, are fond of. Even just seeing a fresh, gleaming badge being applied to immaculately painted sheet metal is enough to curl ones toes. Such is the case with this video from of the E-Golf being pieced together in the Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant. There's no narration or music - just the sounds of production - so it's easy to follow the singular motions that go into the process without distraction, with a slight sense of actually being on the floor. This solo video is only seven minutes long, so it's not quite the epic that was the BMW i3 production series. Therefore, we miss a lot of the initial build, such as pressing the sheet metal, painting, and putting together a lot of the inner workings. What is refreshing to see is how much of the final touches of the electric Golf are done by hand using actual hand tools (and with typical German efficiency). There's even a person riding a bicycle through the factory at one point, which is common at Wolfsburg and also rather quaint. [EVDL] EVLN: DeSaulnier’s road-tax bill SB-1077 CA residents should examine
'Denver road-tax proposals' http://fox40.com/2014/06/23/bill-would-explore-gas-tax-replacement-for-california/ Bill Would Explore Gas Tax Replacement For California by Lonnie Wong [2014/06/23] SACRAMENTO- A proposal for state transportation officials to examine alternatives to California’s gas tax passed another legislative hurdle. Sen. Mark DeSaulnier’s bill that seeks to raise more money for road repairs and construction passed the Assembly Transportation Committee on a vote of 10 to 2. The state’s 18 cent per gallon gas tax hasn’t been increased in 24 years. Inflation and more gas efficient cars means there is little money to keep up with repair demands. “We’re $300 billion short on operations and maintenance needed for all of transportation infrastructure just for the next six years of this decade,” DeSaulnier said. A controversial alternative is a tax based on mileage rather than on gallons of gas sold. The people who are on the roads the most would pay more for repairs. There have been mileage tax proposals at the federal level as well because the highway transportation fund is also dwindling as cars become more efficient and repair costs go up. That would hurt drivers like Aili Gutierrez who is already struggling with gas prices. “I am driving from here to Santa Rosa, Reno, all over. I’ll be paying a lot more,” Gutierrez said. But a mileage based tax would capture tax money from owners of hybrid and all electric vehicles who stack up mileage on roads without paying much to repair them. Some people say that’s only fair. “If I’m only driving two miles a week, why should I have to pay the same taxes as somebody driving 200 miles a week,” driver Sabah Mayfield said. Others factors come into play. Businesses who are on the road a lot to deliver goods could pass on the cost to consumers. Many drivers have privacy concerns with using GPS devices to track their mileage like the state of Oregon is proposing. DeSaulnier’s bill may examine other taxing options as well, like a straight fee on hybrid and electric vehicles, increasing DMV registration fees, and toll roads. “I wouldn’t vote for a vehicle mileage tax right now, but we have to look at the fact that we’re very short of the necessary revenue to keep the infrastructure up to even modest standards,” said DeSaulnier. [EVDL] Gas tax is not working to cover the entire road maintenence budget
The gas tax was effective many years ago. It is insufficient now. Electric cars are only a fraction of one percent of the vehicles on the roads. A simple survey of the patterns of damaged paving on our roads will demonstrate that automobiles are not damaging our streets. The roads are damaged by heavy trucks. The automobiles, whether ICE, EV or hybrid, should not be singled out for road maintenance funding. The trucks are carrying goods which benefit everyone. Therefore the gas tax should be maintained at present levels and a general sales tax increase should be enacted and designated for highway maintenance. It used to work well before the value of the fixed tax was reduced due to inflation. Even though they use much more fuel per mile, that doesn't really offset the damage done by trucks. We should start with much higher fuel taxes that are some fraction of the fuel cost rather than a fixed amount per gallon. I fail to understand why that is and has been such a political impossibility. Re: [EVDL] Gas tax is not working to cover the entire road maintenence budget
Increased trucking costs would be shared by all, operators in lower pay or pay increases, owners and stockholders in higher cost and lower margins, and consumers in higher end cost and shipping cost, or taxpayers pay after the fact when the infrastructure is already deteriorated instead of kept well. But roads need care. I suppose the last point of taxation makes the least sense to me - as a general tax. It seems just fine to me that it is spread around among many as we all benefit and so need to cover the cost of road building to some extent. It is a distortion to lay it all at the feet of one participant or another whoever has the least clout. I am not saying I know an answer, but I think a road use tax of some sort is perhaps less of a distortion. Maybe the point of greatest clout is where the tax should go - they would be in more of a position so require that the money be used well. However, this troubles me because I think the owners and shareholders care the least about the infrastructure. Influence almost always makes for a way to get more money, but not to spread it around Anyway we all like to quibble about this, and I wish we would move along quickly rather than dither over it. It probably works out one way or another.
