Tesla will unveil a new all-electric car to compete with the BMW 3-Series in
March 2016, company boss Elon Musk has said.

The car, to be called the Model 3, will be a smaller version of the
company's successful Model S and Tesla is rumoured to be targeting a
starting price of around $35,000 (£23,000), placing it in the firing line of
entry-level saloon cars from BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Ford.

During a call with investors, Musk said: We are hoping to show the Model 3
in March of next year, although admitted that this date is tentative and
could change depending on how development of the car progresses. The chief
executive added added that the car, which will have a range of 200 miles on
one charge, will enter production in mid- to late-2017, adding: Late 2017
is probably more realistic.

After widespread success with the Model S - and the Model X, a taller SUV
which will go on sale towards the end of this summer - the Model 3 will be
Tesla's most important car to date. Where the Model S is a luxury saloon
priced between £50,000 and £100,000, the Model 3 will bring the concept of a
practical and refined all-electric car to the masses and at a price which is
equal to petrol cars of a similar size and style.

It will, assuming it sells in the high volumes expected of a £23,000 car, be
the make-or-break point for Tesla's network of free Superchargers, which is
gradually expanding across the US, UK, Europe and further afield to provide
a way of quickly recharging for no cost and with the convenience of petrol
stations. The company will need to install thousands more between now and
late-2017 before anxiety - the fear of running out of electricity miles from
a charger - is completely eradicated.

'Ford is trying to kill sex'
The Model 3 is actually Tesla's fourth car after the Roadster, Model S and
upcoming Model X, and was originally called the Model E, but Ford sued
Musk's company, saying it wanted to use the name. As a compromise, the Model
3's name will be stylised as Model III.

Musk told Auto Express earlier this year: We had the model S for sedan and
X for crossover SUV, then a friend asked what we were going to call the
third car. So I said we had the model S and X, we might as well have the
E...and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E - I thought
this is crazy, Ford's trying to kill sex.

The Model 3 is expected to feature an all-new chassis, rather than borrow
the platform shared by the similarly-sized Model S and Model X, and the new
vehicle will be developed in part by Tesla's British engineering chief Chris
Porritt, who used to work for Aston Martin.

Elon Musk first announced the Roadster 3.0 upgrade on December 26, 2014, via
Twitter
]

Last Christmas, Tesla gave Roadster owners an extra gift when CEO Elon Musk
announced that an upgraded package will soon be available.

Almost four months went by with no word, until one owner reached out to Musk
for more details. Using his standard platform for news updates – Twitter –
Musk said recently that the company now expects the Roadster 3.0 package to
be on the market by late summer.

Built exclusively for the Roadster, Tesla’s all-electric sports car produced
between 2008 and 2012, the carmaker estimates that the upgrade will boost
the Roadster’s range by as much as 50 percent.

“There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently
drive the Roadster 3.0 over 400 miles,” Tesla said.

Even though production on the coupe ended two years ago, Tesla said it
wanted Roadster owners to be able to benefit from range improvements the
company had developed since then. The new package will include both software
and component improvements in three main areas: batteries, aerodynamics and
rolling resistance:

Battery: The original Roadster battery was the very first lithium ion
battery put into production in any vehicle. It was state of the art in 2008,
but cell technology has improved substantially since then. We have
identified a new cell that has 31% more energy than the original Roadster
cell. Using this new cell we have created a battery pack that delivers
roughly 70kWh in the same package as the original battery

Aerodynamics: The original Roadster had a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.36.
Using modern computational methods we expect to make a 15% improvement,
dropping the total Cd down to 0.31 with a retrofit aero kit.

Rolling Resistance: The original Roadster tires have a rolling
resistance coefficient (Crr) of 11.0 kg/ton. New tires that we will use on
the Roadster 3.0 have a Crr of roughly 8.9 kg/ton, about a 20% improvement.
We are also making improvements in the wheel bearings and residual brake
drag that further reduce overall rolling resistance of the car.

Though Roadster owners now have a better idea of when they can pick up the
upgraded package, the price is still unspecified. Experts are estimating
that after trading in the Roadster’s old 50 kilowatt-hours battery, the 3.0
package will likely cost between $10,000 and $15,000.

Even with the new battery, though, it doesn’t appear as though the Roadster
will be able to use Tesla’s Superchargers. This network of rapid charging
stations is currently only compatible with the Model S.

Students ‘loved learning’ about electric cars at a Crawley college’s careers
event.

Motorline Nissan showcased an electric car and van at Central Sussex College
Crawley’s Futures Fair.

Thérèse Wynn-Davies, innovation specialist at Motorline Nissan Crawley,
said: “The students loved learning all about the Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 –
they know that electric motoring is well and truly thriving today.

“They were fascinated to learn how both vehicles can be charged up to 80 per
cent in as little as 30 minutes and for such little cost.

“For some it was their first introduction to electric vehicles.

“Hopefully they will become the next generation of electric vehicle owners.”

The vehicles were 100 per cent electric.

A spokesman said they were market leaders in electric motoring.

The annual Fair ran on April 22 and April 23.

Representatives from universities, technology businesses, the voluntary and
public sector and financial companies attended.

The event’s town exhibitors included Crawley STEMfest, Motorline Nissan
Crawley, St Catherine’s Hospice Crawley, and K2 Leisure Centre.

Crawley STEMfest is an annual celebration of Science, Maths, Engineering and
Mathematics in town.

The festival sees events and talks aimed at inspiring young people in the
subjects.

[EVDL] EVLN: VisibleTesla free open source Tesla-S hack-app

2015-05-11 Thread brucedp5 via EV

http://www.techworm.net/2015/05/visibletesla-free-app-to-hack-tesla-model-s.html
VisibleTesla free open source App to hack your 'Tesla Model S'
By Maya Kamath on May 10, 2015

“VisibleTesla” an open source app created by Joe Pasqua helps ‘Tesla Model
S’ owners to record the status of their vehicle’s systems along with
scheduling automated commands.

Tesla Motors’ Model S is an electric driven automated car. This car is a
symbol of high-tech vehicle with Internet connectivity, a 17 inch touch
screen display for control console, the car even sports its own Web browser
and what more it even gets regular software updates. Though Tesla has not
opened up to outside programmers however some enthusiastic owners are using
the REST APIs (which is exposed by Tesla to write a neat interface) for
creating new codes that collects the data from the car, on the other hand
the codes can get the car to do some interesting, innovative things as well.

One such enthusiast is Joe Pasqua, who is based in San Carlos, California.
Pasqua has created a free open source app known as “VisibleTesla”.

In a recent interview with the MIT Technology Review, Pasqua discussed the
various functions that his new app “VisibleTesla” can carry out. This app
can do wonders because it can help the owners not only in tracking the
status of their vehicle’s systems but also to schedule automated commands as
per their requirement. Visible Tesla would allow owners to unlock the doors,
control the heater and air conditioners, control the charging function of
the car, open the rooftop and also gather GPS information.

This free source app is a software that runs on the PC; however by
configuring it for Web access the Tesla Model S owners can access this app
from the web browser which is available in the car. VisibleTesla functioning
is similar to official Tesla iPhone and Android apps.

Pasqua described one function in VisibleTesla app which is useful when a
person visits grocery store because it seems the grocery stores in his area
have stopped providing bags. In such a scenario VisibleTesla comes handy:

“With VisibleTesla I can bring up a Google map, draw a circle around a
certain area, and say, ‘Send me a text message anytime I go in that area,
and here’s what I want it to say.’ So when I go to my grocery store parking
lot, I get a text message that says, ‘remember your bags.’”

Well, must say this is definitely a convenient and handy function.

Due to such convenient functionality of the VisibleTesla app, it has already
gathered a devoted online community wherein users share their data about
their vehicles which helps other owners as well. For example, the community
shares aggregate data as to how weather conditions affect the battery life.
By using VisibleTesla app owners can even program their Model S to turn the
heat at a specific time so that it is warm when users get in. Further, the
app also has a feature to send text notifications to owners in case they
forget put their cars on charging.

Pasqua further mentioned in his interview that so far his app does not have
any support from Tesla; however he also added that he has not encountered
any resistance from Tesla yet. Tesla’s Model S can be controlled via
internet and hence has an easy access to the programmers.

It seems Edward Arthur, a semiconductor designer from southern
Massachusetts, was able to write a simple code that would help him check if
his battery was charging at a specific time and the program would send him a
text notification in case he forgets to plug it for charging. Arthur is not
using VisibleTesla and has found a method to tap into Model S over the
internet.

Tesla was suppose to release a software development kit for its Model S
which has not been released yet; nor are there any details as to when this
will be released. So till then owners of Model S can surely rely on
innovative and creative VisibleTesla app.

You provided nothing that would help us answer your question. Not even the
name of the reseller or manufacturer. What kind of inquiry is that? If you
won't tell us, or show us, then there can be no real answer.

4000 cycles at %90 dod

This is a mostly meaningless specification. Taking lithium cells to 90% DOD
does absolutely nothing bad to them. What might mess them up regarding DOD
is if they were not consistent in their capacity and construction - so that
they would not age well together for the life of the pack.

What you want to know with certainty, is the voltage at 100% SOC (or
somewhat lower for a factor of safety). And then the temperature beyond
which the cells should not go when at a high SOC.

You need to know the recommended high cutoff voltage that is sufficient to
protect the cells regardless of temperature.

You need to be sure your charger never pushes the cells beyond the max
SOC%. If you do push voltage and SOC% higher you need to know the
activation temperature of the system (positive electrode
and electrolyte composition) and never let the pack exceed that temperature
when the cells at at a high SOC%.

What will the life of the cells be? Unless a thorough study using high
precision coulometry has been performed, then you will mostly have no idea
the expected life of the cells. Traditional testing tells you nothing much
about the expected life. The old methods take far too long to give results
and no one ever runs them long enough to get an estimate that is very
certain.
