[EVDL] gliders still valuable?

2015-10-24 Thread fred via EV
I don't see too much group chatter about conversions, but I'm sure there's
still that sort of thing going on. If someone in Florida needs a 2002 Honda
glider, there's a free one offered on Craigslist for this area:
Free red honda it is broke have title (Deltona)
It says Daytona Beach, but it's about 30 miles southwest of Daytona, running
down I-4.
I'm not the offerer, so if you have an interest in the vehicle as a glider, be
sure to contact the original posting party.

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: GM Would Be Smart To Launch An e-Pickup TruckBefore Tesla

2015-10-24 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
To add to David's point:
Last Superbowl had an add from one of the "truck" manufacturers,
showing side-by side two scenes:
Young man standing next to their new model "manly" (oversized) truck
and the same young man standing next to a bland family sedan (which
could have been an EV).
Caption: Who do you find sexier?
It had nothing to do with the fact that the sedan is the smarter
choice in almost all cases of passenger transport, but the
advertisers know that people want a certain image and they play
on that image, allowing them to sell the vehicles that make them
the most money, not the vehicles that are best for their customers.

That is the power of advertising *and* greed.

I'm not an economist so maybe I have my terminology wrong. I don't know that
it was actually "creating a market," but consider what the big automakers did
in promoting trucks and SUVs.

Until the 1980s, pickup trucks were for craftsmen and farmers. The poor
adolescent rural kid who had to drive his date to the dance in his dad's pickup
truck was a standing joke. Meanwhile, SUVs (Jeep, IH Scout, Land Rover, Nissan
Patrol, Toyota Land Cruiser) were noisy and rode rough; they were mostly for
sportsmen.

Detroit wasn't happy. They made big profits on big, gas hungry cars, but those
cars were subject to the US "gas guzzler" tax, which hurt sales.
They'd even had to downsize the Cadillac and Lincoln.

Then they hit on the idea of pushing big, gas-hungry TRUCKS, which weren't
subject to the gas guzzler tax because they were supposedly work vehicles.

IIRC Dodge was one of the first to "civilize" a pickup truck with a fancier
interior, softer springs, and noise proofing. (They also made a pickup with a
vinyl roof at one time!) There was a long line of ads showing how trucks and
SUVs could fit into a suburban lifestyle. And what do you know - truck sales
took off. Today the top selling vehicles are often trucks. That's the power
of advertising.

So IF the automakers truly wanted to create demand for EVs (which as I say may
not be the same thing as "creating a market"), either passenger car or truck,
they know how to do it. But right now there's no incentive for them to do so.

It's interesting to contemplate though. What if building their compliance EVs
drove down EV component prices to the point where they were making MORE profit
on EVs than on ICEVs?

Re: [EVDL] VW's 'dieselgate' puts spotlight on electric cars in Germany

It's hard for government to target the demise of an industry like oil. Are
officials are elected and no one would back such a plan or very few. Everyone
has someone in their family or that they know earning a living from oil.

[EVDL] VW's 'dieselgate' puts spotlight on electric cars in Germany
Depressing to consider that, even in Germany with all its solar and wind power
and now the VW diesel mess...even *that* isn't enough to launch EVs into the
mainstream.

http://phys.org/news/2015-10-vw-dieselgate-spotlight-electric-cars.html

"The government's goal 'is quite simply not achievable,' said Stefan Bratzel,
director of the Center of Automotive Research in Bergisch Gladbach.

"There was 'a lot of euphoria, but no vision for a feasible economic model' for
the electric car in Germany, he complained."

Sorry, but that's just bullshit. The Nissan Leaf makes plain that low-cost
high-quality EVs are possible. Teslas prove that EVs are the future for
no-holds-barred luxury sedans. And PIHs like the Volt and Germany's own BMW i3
demonstrate that an "80/20" solution is practical for all the edge cases people
like to latch onto.

It's not rocket surgery.

Slap a 50% tax surcharge on all passenger diesel fuel in light of the scandal
and distribute the money equally to every registered owner of an EV in monthly
payments. Problem solved.

...of course, that would harm the quarterly profit projections of the people
who buy the politicians, so it ain't gonna happen...but we need to stop
pretending that the problems are technological and realize that they are 100%
political at this point.

The technology is solved. Yes, it's going to get better, and significantly so
-- but we're already at "good enough," by any reasonable measure.

No one creates a market IMO. Elon filled a market that was already there. He
even said so he said he say rich people driving a prius and said someone
should make a car for them. They rest make them because of government mandate.
Big difference.
If the model 3 comes out it will sell. Problem so far is that they cost more to
produce because of the batteries. All new technology starts that way

Unless they were not doing exactly what they were hired not to do.

The major auto manufacturers have all proven that they can make electric
vehicles. They know the limitations of what they have produced, how to correct
them, and how to manufacture EVs cost effectively. Now they are waiting for
somebody to come along and spend the money to create a market. Once that
happens, they will all make as many as people will buy.

Even Nissan knows how much they make selling EVs compared to ICEVs. EV revenue
is insignificant in comparison. No manufacturer is going to spend money
creating a market just to watch other manufacturers benefit from their
investment.

Tesla created a market that didn't exist and isn't big enough for any major
manufacturer to notice or care if they do notice. If Tesla  creates a market
big enough to attract the attention of the major manufacturers, then the major
manufacturers will jump in with both feet. One that is late to the game with
their own effort will buy what is left of Tesla's auto business.

I think Tesla will push its market to the point just below something that will
interest major manufacturers.  Going further will doom them.

[EVDL] Domino's DXP = a missed opportunity> they could have done it better

] ...

An electric vehicle (EV) was said to be part of the plan previously, but the
company said the that the DXP would have no time to stop for a recharge. The
cars will have a life span ranging from three to five years, after which it
will retire from its position as Domino’s pizza delivery expert.

Franchise owners can expect to purchase one at a price of somewhere between
USD$20,000 to USD$25,000, while Dominos will fully take on the engineering
costs. The company is planning to deliver 100 DXP pizza cars to 25 cities in
the US over the next three months.
[© 2015 Driven Communications]

% ?!Seriously!? The DXP will have to stop to be refilled with pies, the
driver take a break, and or be cleaned, etc. Obviously Domino's is very
ignorant about EVs and how quick a L3 charge is
http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/chevrolet/vehicles/spark-ev/2015.html

Domino's had three years to work with GM and others to have this DXP
delivery vehicle customized for them (see links below). But the GM vehicle
platform they choose was a Spark-ice. Don't be confused by Domino's use of
the wording 'purpose-built', when it is actually a low-quantity customizing
run of Spark-ice.

The reason I post this here is not to promote their ice-choice but to ask
why didn't they do it better? Here is a small quantity run (which GM has
previous stated there is no money in small quantities), which customises one
of their GM vehicles to Domino's spec's.

Granted the Spark-ice is a low-cost higher mpg ice, but with all the PR hype
on this special-delivery-vehicle to promote Domino's sales, the flashy
paint-job self-promoting it, and the other light-show effects built into the
vehicle, ...
? Wouldn't it have been prudent to make some sort of effort to Electrify the
Domino's delivery vehicle to improve their cleaner-greener creds?

Domino's business model still has their drivers' use their own polluting
(cheap-n-dirty ice) vehicles to make deliveries. But for those franchises
that embrace this new high-mpg DXP vehicle, it would be a less-polluting
improvement (but they are not touting that). If Domino's and GM are
expending all this effort, ...
? Wouldn't it have been wise to also tap into the PR value of a having your
pie delivered by a cleaner-greener Electrified vehicle?

Problably the best (and most expensive) way would have been to use Spark
EVs, and at the franchise, assign a dedicated delivery EV parking space with
a L3 combo EVSE right next to the door for quick charging while also doing a
quick refilling the DXP with pies. Since the DXP are franchise owned, going
Electric would be less costly than the cost of chemical-fuel used and all
the ice-maintenance a Spark-ice would have. Meaning: Electric miles driven
is money saved.

BTW U.S. prices: Spark-ice $12+k, Spark-EV 25+k. So yea, it would have cost
more for each Domino's franchise to go EV. But the more EVs GM sells, the
more carbon credits (in certain states) GM can use to sell their ice
vehicles. Perhaps GM could have given a discount to Domino's franchises that
wanted a customize Spark EV.

Looking at the DXP site (URL below) the former front passenger seat area was
changed. That space could have been used for a small on-board genset/rex
unit similar to what the i3 EV offers as a option. The Domino's franchise
would have the EV street creds while ensuring they could make their 80 pie
deliveries without a L3 charge, and GM would have the carbon credits they
want. But since the purchase price would be more, it is likely Domino's
would shoot that Spark-EV idea down as well.

A new Chevy Volt pih sells for ~$34+k. So, that also makes it also too
expensive for Domino's to consider. And the quantity of these customised
Spark-ice is too low for GM to consider modifing the Spark-ice into a
cheaper version of a Volt pih.

I am going to assume that all of this is just too new, too much, or too
costly for Domino's to even consider anyrhing other than an old-school
ice-platform (they went cheap). Perhaps if this Domino's Delivery Vehicle
translates to more sales, Domino's might spring for offering a Spark-EV on
the next-gen Domino's Delivery Vehicle?
(I'm not going to hold my breath, nor let my pizza slice get cold)

I suppose I am too much a visionist: wanting and expecting more from Dominos
and GM. Explore the links below and thanks for letting me share my views
(vent/rant). %

Friday morning, Hurricane Patricia became the strongest storm ever [

surprise: Its winds grew from 60 MPH to a sustained 200 MPH in just over a

Hurricane Center is calling Patricia “potentially catastrophic.” And it
almost certainly wouldn’t be so powerful if human activity hadn’t warmed the
waters to near-record temperatures before it developed.

“Patricia was fueled by ocean waters that were a near-record-warm 87 F,
which would not have been so warm without climate change,” Jeff Masters, the
director of meteorology at the Weather Underground, wrote me in an email.
“It is fair to say climate change increased the odds of getting such a

More than eight in 10 (81%) 14 year olds believe the first car they buy will
be electric, a survey has found.

Researchers polled 800 teenagers aged 14-17 and found that the popularity of
greener-fuelled cars increased as the interviewees became younger.

Some 88% of the young people surveyed felt that more motorists - regardless
of their age - should be driving an electric car.

The study was commissioned by Go Ultra Low, a government and industry-backed
campaign to increase sales of ultra-low emissions vehicles,

Poppy Welch, head of Go Ultra Low, said: "It's really encouraging to see how
popular electric cars have become among British teenagers - as the next
generation of first car buyers.

"Our research shows that younger consumers are more drawn towards
environmentally friendly purchases, including when planning which car
they'll drive when they get their licence."

Park24, which commands 70 percent of Japan’s car-share market, expects to
almost double its fleet by 2019.

What do you do when you’re the biggest parking company in a country where
new-car sales have been on a gradual decline for the past decade? Koichi
Nishikawa, the president of Japan’s Park24, decided to turn about 7,000 of
his company’s 16,435 garages and lots around the country into spaces to hold
vehicles available for short-term rental as part of a new car-sharing
service. For a monthly fee of 1,030 yen, or about $8, members who sign up
online or with a smartphone receive a member card that functions as a car
key. Vehicles are booked online or using Park24’s smartphone app.
Subscribers are charged in 15-minute increments. With 500,000 members, the
car-sharing service has become one of the world’s biggest.

What’s remarkable is that more than 50 percent of members are in their 20s
and 30s. In today’s Japan, many young people aren’t interested in cars
because they can’t afford them; they spend disposable income instead on
gadgets and smartphones. Twentysomethings accounted for about 13 percent of
all driver’s license holders in Japan last year, compared with 21 percent in
2001, according to National Police Agency data. The cheapest car for sale,
such as a Daihatsu or Suzuki basic minicar, costs about 800,000 yen
($6,670). The monthly fee for a parking spot in Tokyo runs from 30,000 yen
to 50,000 yen. Researcher IHS Automotive forecasts that annual Japanese auto
production will shrink to 8.4 million vehicles by 2022, from about 9.2
million last year.

Park24 is betting that young people still occasionally need to use cars for
shopping, weekend trips, or, perhaps, to impress a date. “In my college
days, you couldn’t ask a girl out without a car,” Nishikawa says of the
status once bestowed by a set of wheels. He also doesn’t charge college
students a monthly fee. The company owns 13,000 vehicles and plans to almost
double the size of its fleet, to 25,000, by 2019. It’s one of the biggest
buyers of new Japanese vehicles—more than 10,000 cars annually for the
sharing business and a car-rental venture it acquired in 2009. It commands
70 percent of Japan’s car-share market.

Yu Makisumi is a typical Japanese twentysomething, intent on looking for a
job and playing video games but with little interest in cars. “I have never
heard of anyone coming to school by car,” he says. He owns a secondhand
scooter and likes traveling with it. Four years ago, however, he joined
Park24’s service after he and a friend saw a roadside advertisement and his
friend encouraged him to sign up. He has a license and knows how to drive
(the minimum driving age in Japan is 18). He says Pa

The project is being supported by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade
and Industry.

The testing will see Honda and Marshall Islands verifying the possibility of
widespread use of electric mobility products and installing of
infrastructure for EV charging in the region.

Marshall Islands depends on imports for its energy supply and currently
taking efforts to increase energy self-sufficiency and reduce energy costs.

The verification results are expected support resolving the Island's energy
crisis, Honda stated.

In another development, Honda is equipping its California campus with 120
electric vehicle (EV) chargers, as well as a nearby public-access charging
station to better serve its employees.

With this initiative, the company is aimed to increase the use of
alternative fuel vehicles and to prepare for a new generation of plug-in
vehicles set to arrive by 2018, NGT News Reported.

Artega, besides its electric roadster Scalo, unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt
Motor Show an electric quad called Karo.

This unique ATV hasthree motor options (4, 15 and 17 kW of continuous power)
and a 5.3 kWh battery, good for up to 50 miles (80 km).

Peak power of the 17 kW motor is 38 kW, so just 10 kW less than in the
Mitsubishi i-MiEV. The result is insane-like acceleration: 0-50 mph in 4.5
seconds.

“The Artega brand enters a new vehicle type with the Artega Karo. The
new German electric fun mobile combines the benefits of ATVs, jet skis, and
motor scooters. The two-seater Artega Karo is a concept vehicle that is
prepared for serial production.

The racing-car-like chassis, in connection with the direct power of the
electrical motor, provides a driving experience that exceeds the proverbial
“karting feel”. The Artega Karo accelerates from 0 to 50 mls in under 5
seconds. Beautifully shaped leg shields with integrated reinforcement of
high-strength steel optimise safety and splash water protection.

The fun factor is increased by a removable sound module with smartphone
connection. Bluetooth can be used to play back the desired music from any
device (mobile phone, tablet, MP3-player). The Artega Karo’s charging
function is a perfect asset as well: The charger and charging cable with a
regular protected plug are on board – just like in a vacuum cleaner.”

A FARMER has embraced electric motoring as he enjoys a more eco-friendly way
of delivering to customers.

Nissan Wirral, in Woodchurch Road, has supplied a 100% electric e-NV200 to
Claremont Farm in Old Clatterbridge Road, Bebington.

The popular farm, shop and restaurant is using the award-winning vehicle –
which costs an average of just 2p a mile to run – to deliver vegetable
supplies to its customers.

Managing Director Andrew Pimbley said: “I get asked a lot about the van by
local people when I pop into town to do my deliveries because it’s so quiet.

“I’m a complete convert to be honest. At first I didn’t think I’d enjoy the
drive, but it’s fantastic. It’s also great that you’re helping the local
environment, which – as a farmer – is so important. You can whizz around
town knowing you’re not adding to the local air pollution and at the same
time it’s costing hardly anything.”

The e-NV200 is based on the Nissan NV200 – International Van of the Year
2010 – and utilises the proven technology of the record-breaking Nissan
LEAF.

In addition to low running costs and emissions, users also benefit from low
maintenance costs that make for unrivalled total cost of ownership – £1,200
lower than a conventional diesel van over four years – and an unbeatable
proposition for businesses large and small thanks to the unique driving
experience of the e-NV200, drivers will feel less fatigued due to the lack
of engine vibration in the cabin.

Meanwhile, the model, which is priced from £13,568 in panel van form
(incorporating PiVG), offers a class-leading 4.2m3 capacity and an
impressive 703kg payload.

Michael Griffiths, Sales Controller at Nissan Wirral, said: “We’re delighted
that Claremont Farm has adopted electric motoring. The family-run firm can
see the clear benefits of the e-NV200 – it’s low cost running costs and
maintenance means it’s a great way save money which means can they spend
money on other areas of the business.”

Queen's University Belfast are to unveil a hi-tech electrical DeLorean
]

A HI-TECH electrical version of the DeLorean car is to be unveiled in
Belfast to mark the 30th anniversary of Back To The Future.

The film franchise has ensured the cars retain a cult following after hero
Marty McFly used one to travel back in time.

He accidentally transported himself 30 years into the past, to 1955, when
his parents were in high school. Marty's interference with his parents' love
story intervened with the chances of his own birth, pushing him to do
anything to get back "home" to 1985.

Queen's University Belfast will unveil its electric DeLorean on Wednesday
October 21, the exact date that McFly travelled to in the film's 1989
sequel, Back to the Future II.

Dr David Laverty, who leads the project, said the project was about
modifying a car into an electric vehicle, but staff and students "wanted to
do it in style".

"The DeLorean was the obvious choice because of its strong connection to
Belfast and its starring role in the Back To The Future movies," he said.

He said in the future more energy would come from renewable electricity.

"The electrification of transport is a major global challenge, so projects
like the Queen's Electric DeLorean are crucial in equipping young engineers
with the knowledge and expertise to build the electric vehicles of the
future," Dr Laverty added.

The DeLorean's silver gull-wing door design was immortalised by the 1985
Hollywood film starring Michael J Fox a few years after the collapse of the
original manufacturing firm in the north.

When Back To The Future hit cinemas in 1985, it raked in millions of pounds
in ticket sales, became the highest-grossing film of the year and landed a
sound effects editing Academy Award and three more nominations.

The first film was released in 1985, three years after the closure of the
original factory in Belfast. Fewer than 9,000 cars had rolled off the
production line at the Dunmurry plant.

Dr Laverty added: "The DeLorean was in a poor state of repair when we took
ownership in January 2014, and since then our students have worked with
experts within Queen's Electrical Energy laboratory - one of the few
university facilities in the UK dedicated to teaching and research of
electrical generators and motors - to develop the car's hi-tech electric
engine."
