https://www.pressherald.com/2019/03/21/maine-to-give-5-1-million-subsidy-to-boost-electric-vehicle-purchases/ Maine to give $5.1 million subsidy to boost electric vehicle purchases 2019-03-21 Peter McGuire The state will use Volkswagen settlement money to encourage all-electric use. Maine will provide a $5.1 million subsidy and add at least 50 public vehicle charging stations to encourage residents and companies to buy all-electric vehicles. Gov. Janet Mills announced the financial incentive program in a news release Thursday. Funding comes from a 2017 award Maine received as part of a multistate settlement with carmaker Volkswagen to resolve environmental damage caused by that company’s cheating U.S. emissions tests. “Maine people shell out $5 billion a year to out-of-state fossil fuel companies, and a lot of that money is spent on gas for vehicles that just becomes carbon dioxide pumped into our atmosphere,” Mills said in a statement. “We can do better. It is time to used in the next generation of technologies that will move our state towards a renewable future.” About half the money will be used to help public agencies and organizations that aid the elderly buy electric vehicles. The remainder will provide rebates to Maine residents and businesses to buy or lease electric vehicles. The state estimates rebates could put up to 900 new electric vehicles on Maine roads, more than twice the number now registered in the state. Efficiency Maine Trust in April plans to ask for bids to install 50 to 60 electric vehicle charging stations at public buildings across the state. https://www.abccolumbia.com/2019/03/20/ford-announces-plans-to-build-electric-vehicles-in-michigan/ Ford announces plans to build electric vehicles in Michigan Mar 20, 2019 CNN [video flash] (CNN) – Ford plans to start building electric and self-driving cars at plants in Michigan. The company announced a $900 million investment there Wednesday, and plans to add 900 jobs in the state. Last year, Ford (F) pledged $11 billion to transform its business and produce more electric and self-driving cars. The Michigan plans are part of that overhaul, said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of global operations. Ford will invest about $850 million at its facility in Flat Rock, Michigan, to produce electric cars. Another $50 million is earmarked for self-driving technology. The Flat Rock plant makes Mustangs and Lincoln Continentals. It was scheduled to lose its second shift next month and transfer affected workers to other nearby plants. But the announcement Wednesday means the plant will regain a second shift by 2023 to build a new, pure electric vehicle. It will continue production of the Mustang and Continental, too. Ford does not currently have any pure electric vehicle. It discontinued an electric version of the Focus when it stopped making the gasoline-powered version of that sedan last year. It is already working on another pure electric vehicle. The still-unnamed SUV will be assembled at a plant in Cuautitlán, Mexico, starting next year. Ford also announced plans Wednesday to add an undisclosed amount of jobs and investment to a plant in Hermosillo, Mexico, to build the next generation Transit Connect van starting in 2021. It will add a second shift to that Mexican plant. Production will be consistent with the USMCA trade agreement, the deal worked out by the Trump administration that is supposed to replace NAFTA. The USMCA still requires congressional approval. This is not the first time Ford has announced plans to invest in Flat Rock’s ability to produce next generation vehicles. In January of 2017 it said it would invest $700 million in the plant to build electric and self-driving cars, a move it said would add 700 jobs. Mark Fields, who was then CEO of Ford, said the move was a “vote of confidence” in then President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration. And Trump praised Ford for the move. But by the end of 2017, Ford changed those plans and decided to build its next pure electric vehicle in Mexico. [EVDL] EVLN: EV.ca incentive's CA$45k limit excludes Tesla EVs
https://electrek.co/2019/03/19/canada-incentive-electric-cars-tesla-excluded/ Canada announces new $5,000 incentive for electric cars, Tesla vehicles excluded Mar. 19th 2019 Fred Lambert [image https://i1.wp.com/electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2018/04/flo_vancouver_curbside_charging_station-e1524834730111.jpeg ] As part of its new budget, the Canadian federal government has announced a new $5,000 incentive for electric cars that cost less than $45,000, however, it excludes Tesla vehicles. Some Canadian provinces already have EV incentive programs but unlike the US, there has never been a federal program to reduce the cost of electric vehicles. With the launch of their latest budget, the Canadian government has now announced a new $5,000 incentive program that is not yet completed. Here’s the current language in the budget: “To encourage more Canadians to buy zero-emission vehicles, Budget 2019 proposes to provide $300 million over three years, starting in 2019–20, to Transport Canada to introduce a new federal purchase incentive of up to $5,000 for electric battery or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000. Program details to follow.” The $45,000 cut off point covers vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt EV, and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, but all of Tesla’s vehicles are excluded since the base Model 3 starts at $47,000 CAD. Along with the direct incentive for some consumer electric vehicles, the budget also includes other initiatives like investments in charging infrastructure and a ZEV mandate — though it sounds like it will include “voluntary zero-emission vehicle sales targets”. Here are the main points: To expand the network of zero-emission vehicle charging and refuelling stations, Budget 2019 proposes to build on previous investments by providing Natural Resources Canada with $130 million over five years, starting in 2019–20, to deploy new recharging and refuelling stations in workplaces, public parking spots, commercial and multi-unit residential buildings, and remote locations. Meeting the ambitious sales targets requires automakers to make sufficient models and numbers of zero-emission vehicles available for sale to meet Canadian needs. Budget 2019 proposes to provide $5 million over five years, starting in 2019–20 to Transport Canada to work with auto manufacturers to secure voluntary zero-emission vehicle sales targets to ensure that vehicle supply meets increased demand. To attract and support new high-quality, job-creating investments in zero-emission vehicle manufacturing in Canada, automotive manufacturers and parts suppliers can access funding through the Strategic Innovation Fund, which was recently provided $800 million in additional funding through the 2018 Fall Economic Statement. Electrek’s Take This has been long overdue. We needed the federal government to be more involved in the acceleration of EV adoption. I don’t take this is the best way to do it, but it is certainly better than nothing. The best way is to attach an appropriate price to products that produce carbon emissions in order to represent their true impact on the environment and the health of the population, but it doesn’t seem to be a popular enough idea at this point. Therefore, we will take the EV incentive. Now as for the price limit. This is a little controversial. I understand where they are coming from. No one wants to give subsidies for relatively rich people to buy luxury cars. I am not advocating for that either, but we still have to stay true to the goal of the incentive. The goal of that subsidy is to incentivize people to buy electric cars over gas-powered cars and represent the value they have on the environment and health of the population in the price of the vehicles. That’s the case across the entire lineup of vehicles on the market. In short, if that’s really the goal, you also want to incentivize buyers of premium sedans and SUVs to go electric instead of buying polluting vehicles in the same segments. Again, that would be easier to achieve with a carbon tax, but they went with the direct subsidy and that’s what creates this strange situation. [EVDL] EVLN: GM 2build Bolt’s basic-bones-based EVs> 400 Orion-MI jobs
https://jalopnik.com/general-motors-will-build-a-new-chevy-bolt-based-electr-1833505196 General Motors Will Build a New Chevy Bolt-Based Electric Car in Michigan March 23, 2019 David Tracy [image https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--dWNZj3kL--/c_fill,fl_progressive,g_center,h_900,q_80,w_1600/qq9rqs2ax6mjph4lghor.png (visable bolt) ] GM’s been making headlines lately because of plant shutdowns and job cuts, but now for some not-terrible news: The company says it will add 400 jobs in Michigan as it invests $300 million into a new electric car, which will be sold in addition to—and based on the architecture of—the Chevrolet Bolt. The Chevrolet Bolt hatchback is a bit boring in many ways, but anyone who’s driven one will tell you that it’s actually quite good as an EV. It’s fun enough, it’s practical, and it’s relatively cheap (though sadly, I think it looks cheaper than it is). So I guess it’s not a bad thing that Chevrolet is going to continue building EVs based on the car’s basic bones. That’s the crux of GM’s announcement today, which reads, in part: The new Chevrolet electric vehicle is in addition to the existing Chevrolet Bolt EV, further advancing GM’s commitment to an all-electric future. It will be designed and engineered off an advanced version of the current award-winning Bolt EV architecture. The new Chevy will be built in the Bolt’s plant, Orion Assembly, which is located in Orion Township, Michigan not far from Detroit. GM claims in a press release that the company had previously been considering building the car elsewhere. Here’s why, GM says, it changed its mind: The new electric vehicle had been slated for production outside of the U.S. The decision to bring it to Orion was based on many factors, including: The Orion plant currently builds the Bolt EV, and the new Chevrolet EV will be based off an advanced version of the same vehicle architecture. Moving production to a U.S. manufacturing plant supports the rules of origin provisions in the proposed United States, Mexico and Canada Agreement. Whether being able to give the president something positive to say about GM amid his slew of critical remarks factored into this equation, we’ll probably never know. But in any case, expect another EV from Chevy sometime early next decade. We don’t have exact timing, but back in 2017, GM promised 20 electric vehicles by 2023, and Automotive News wrote that two of those would be Bolt-based and launch by roughly April, 2019. I doubt GM will meet that timing, but I bet this new Bolt-based car isn’t too far off. A number of automotive outlets are hypothesizing that the new EV will be a crossover, which would make sense given the public’s insatiable thirst for cars that give up handling and fuel economy for ride height. That makes me wonder whether the Bolt’s platform can easily accommodate a second motor to allow for all-wheel drive. Hopefully we’ll learn more soon. This new vehicle will come in addition to an electric Cadillac, which the brand said in January would be the first General Motors vehicle built on a “future EV platform,” which some are referring to as BEVIII (the Bolt is built on the BEVII platform). I like to get come use and No Fires Hi evtlfp20, I would be very wary of those cells! First, the seller cheated you. Send them back, and demand replacements or a refund! Second, don't expect them to ever deliver their rated capacity or current again. You might be able to recover some capacity from them, but they will almost certainly be damaged by being run dead. Third, if you were able to charge them, check their internal resistance. It cannot be the "17-22 meg" that you said. Did you mis-type, and it's really 17-22 milli-ohms (0.017 to 0.022 ohms)? How did you measure it? A 30 amphour cell good for 10C would have to deliver 300 amps. To do this, it can't have an internal resistance more than about 5 milliohms (0.005 ohms). So even if yours are 17-22 milliohms, they are bad. The danger with damaged cells is that they become resistors at high charge or discharge currents. The resistance produces heat, which starts a runaway reaction leading to a fire. The other danger is that they can spontaneously short, dumping all of the charge in them, also causing a fire. -- Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. And, frankly, it’s a remarkable moment for his dairy farm. “It’s like a beacon of hope, I suppose,” Betts, 49, tells Inverse. “In terms of a visual, I think it’s just amazing, and we’ve had no end of positive comments about it.” Betts’ family has been farming in the southeast of England for over 500 years, but the Winterdale Cheese Farm in Kent actually feels like something out of the near-future, akin to the self-reliant house concept Tesla CEO Elon Musk first demonstrated in 2016. On this cheese farm, Tesla “Powerwall” batteries store wind energy from that turbine and solar energy from the panels in the cow’s pasture. It all goes toward the production of 2 million liters of milk and 52 tons of cheese. It also charges a Tesla Model X, that’s used to deliver produce to customers. Betts is part of a growing movement toward sustainable, renewable energy as costs continue to drop. Solar installation prices in the US have declined from $6.65 per watt in 2010 to $2.89 per watt in 2018, while wind energy costs have dropped by $795 per kilowatt in eight years to $1,610 per kilowatt in 2017. This shift has been seen worldwide, with global renewables capacity jumping 8.3 percent for the past seven years. Mike O’Boyle, director of electricity policy for the San Francisco-based think tank, EnergyInnovation, says he doesn’t see this growth as a blip but the start of a widening pattern. “In the US in particular, but also globally, solar production will continue to increase at a rapid rate growing year-on-year,” O’Boyle tells Inverse. “Costs will continue to fall. It will be probably the largest addition of capacity to the US grid over the next five to 10 years.” [image] Cows graze in a field at the Winterdale Cheese Farm in Kent in the Southeast of England. Kent is known as the “Garden of England” in part due to its farmland that produces exceptional food and drink. Betts’ family has been in farming in the area since 1495. His brother owns Church Farm in Offham down the hill, land previously owned by King Harold’s brother, as recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book. Betts’ grandfather started the Winterdale dairy farm shortly after World War II, when the country “desperately needed food.” It was in 2006 that Betts’ green instincts came into play. He opted to diversify into making cheddar, avoiding the fate of smaller dairy farms that struggled in an increasingly centralized industry. “I’ve always had a passion about utilizing energy as efficiently as possible,” Betts says. The problem with cheddar is it needs to mature for between 10 months to a year at 10 to 12 degrees Celsius (50-53 degrees Fahrenheit), which Betts describes as “the real killer in terms of energy.” “We had this wacky idea, following this traditional principle: We dug out a man-made cave,” Betts says. After they press the cheese for three days, they wrap it in cloth, open the door, and lower it 10 feet to the cave floor. “People may have laughed at the beginning, but now they’re all following! An even bigger cheesemaker, down in the West Country, have done their own cave now.” Betts has taken this approach to other aspects of operations. The farm takes the ton-and-a-half of morning milk straight from the cow at a body temperature of around 32.5 degrees Celsius (90.5 degrees Fahrenheit). This is a half-degree away from perfect cheesemaking temperatures, cutting a further source of energy. [image] Robin Betts, cheese farmer. In 2011, Betts’ installed 10 kilowatts of solar panels and a ground-source heat pump. The pump would provide hot water required for the cheese dairy and offer underfloor heating. The solar panels would power the heat pump and lighting around the farm. He also converted the building lights into LEDs to save more power. The farm started using electric vehicles in 2013, initially with a Nissan Leaf that “could get around 100 kilos of cheese in the boot” — although its maximum range of 80 miles left a lot to be desired. They then switched to the BMW i3 with a 20 kilowatt-hour battery and range extender before going all-electric by trading in their gas-powered station wagon for a 100 kilowatt-hour Tesla Model X that could handle longer journeys. In March 2018, Betts installed three Tesla Powerwall systems — large residential-use battery packs — on a three-phase supply, one on each phase. At the start of this year,
