campers looking to enjoy the outdoors are already mindful of their
eco-footprint. But the RV industry in North America has been slow to adapt
green technology, and the European electric campers that have come to market
have been plagued by limited range.

Hyundai Motorsport has completed the inaugurating track test of the Veloster
N ETCR, the company’s first electric racing car, at the Hungaroring.

Following its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this month,
the new Hyundai Veloster N ETCR will participate in the ETCR racing series
that will launch next year, where it’ll go against models like the Cupra
e-Racer.

The new Hyundai Veloster N ETCR features a mid-mounted electric powertrain
that sends its power over to the rear wheels, with the batteries mounted
within the floor. The electric race car’s chassis is radically different
than any other of the company’s previous projects.

Hyundai has gained some invaluable expertise with the championship-winning
i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR and now aims to have a strong contender ready
for the inaugural ETCR racing series.

The test in Hungary was just the start of Hyundai’s extensive development
program for the coming months. The company’s first electric race car will
lay the foundations for Hyundai’s future high-performance electric
production cars.

“We have shown with the i30 N TCR and Veloster N TCR that we can produce a
very strong Touring Car, but now we have a lot to learn about this new
package before the racing starts in 2020,” said Andrea Adamo, Hyundai
Motorsport Team Director.

“The next few months will be very busy – we essentially have two challenges;
we have to develop the chassis, but also learn to use the power from the
batteries and motors effectively. However, with the testing schedule ahead I
am confident that our engineers will be able to produce another race winning
car,” Adamo added.

It's not going to simply be a regular XC40 with an electric powertrain,
though.

Volvo promised a battery-electric vehicle in 2019, and gosh darn it, it's
going to deliver. Next month, Volvo will pen a new chapter in the company's
history as it introduces its first electric car to the world. The automaker
said in a Wednesday announcement that the Volvo XC40 will serve as the basis
of its first electric vehicle and detailed some of the structural details of
the forthcoming EV.

While Volvo wasn't ready to show what the compact SUV will look like, we do
know it's going to be a very different animal under the skin. The Swedish
luxury marque underscored that its vehicles always focus on safety, and the
electric XC40 will be no different. Volvo said it's redesigned and
reinforced the entire front structure to compensate for the fact that, well,
there's no engine there.

Meanwhile, the battery will be stuffed in the XC40 EV's floor and the images
depict two electric motors -- one for each axle, likely to create an
all-wheel drive system. The battery includes a safety cage embedded in the
middle of the body structure, too, to protect it in the event of a crash.
Essentially, the big battery gets its own crumple zone.

Moving to the rear, the electric powertrain is partially integrated with the
body structure to better distribute forces felt in a crash.

The safekeeping doesn't stop with passive engineering. The XC40 EV will
introduce a new active-safety architecture with radars, cameras and
ultrasonic sensors. The software to run the entire active safety fleet comes
from Zenuity, a joint-venture operated by Volvo and Veoneer. The Swedish
automaker promises it's scalable by nature and will lay the foundation for
self-driving car technology.

We can expect more details on the electric XC40 in the coming weeks before
Volvo lifts the curtain on its first EV on Oct. 16.

An innovative sensor strip promises a far better way to connect human
brains to machines.

The U.S. military has a growing interest in brain-computer interfaces:
sensors that pick up brain signals and electronics that convert them to
digital information that can be read by computers. But today’s most common
way to pick up the brain’s electromagnetic signals via
electroencephalography, or EEG, involves sensor-studded caps that are bulky,
look ridiculous, need to be connected via wires to other machines, and often
require conductive jelly in order to work. Moreover, they work unpredictably
depending on individual factors like hair. They’re poorly suited for regular
life, much less for soldiers.

A group of scientists from several universities has created an unobtrusive
brain-computer interface strip that could revolutionize the way humans
convert their thoughts into a machine-readable format.

A narrow strip affixes to the upper neck, performing the data collection of
a traditional EEG cap. The signals are then interpreted by software —aided
by machine learning— to produce data that could be used to steer vehicles or
operate other computers. The entire system is called SKINTRONICS.

“We demonstrated that this portable, flexible wearable system can control an
electric wheelchair, mini-car, and a software-presentation” Woon-Hong Yeo, a
researcher of the Georgia Institute of Technology, told Defense One over
email. Yeo and his colleagues’ paper appears in the current issue of the
journal Nature Machine Intelligence.

Yeo and his team designed the strip for people who have lost mobility, but
its advantages over the EEG cap promise to give it much wider applicability.

“Yes, obviously this system can be used for controlling other devices
including military equipment,” he said.

The U.S. military in recent years has invested heavily in research in
different types of brain and computer interfaces. In 2015, the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, revealed that a woman with a
surgically implanted chip had piloted a virtual F-35. Last September, they
showed that a person outfitted with the same chip could steer a virtual
assortment of drones.

The Chinese military is also moving ahead with similar research, according
to Elsa Kania, a fellow with the Technology and National Security Program at
the Center for a New American Security.

Beyond brain-based piloting, the military is exploring the use of
brain-computer interfaces for communication. In 2008, the U.S. Army gave $4
million to researchers at the University of California, Irvine to study what
the researchers described as “synthetic telepathy.” A person wearing an EEG
cap or in a magnetoencephalographic chamber would attempt to trick their
brain into sending out electronic signals in a form that could be read as
communication — in fact, Morse code.

Wrote Yeo, “Currently, we have limitations of differentiating brain signals
(less than 10 different types) to control external hardware or software,
which will be resolved by enhancing the machine learning algorithm and
optimizing the circuit design, while increasing the brain signal amplitude
via a better skin contact of electrodes.”

reviewed, and a value judgement passed on each. Some might be simple, 
others not so much.


For instance, if you intend on excluding production EV's. Mike's own

But wait! If only BEV's are allowed, Mike's Honda Pusher trailer

Mike's an understanding guy, he'll get over having to delete his own 
entries, right? What about other users who have both production EV's 
and conversions? Are they going to be as charitable?


What is being suggested is taking away from the album, rather than 
adding to it. In the long picture, will this help or hurt the overall 
health and popularity of the album? Unless there is an issue with 
server space, hosting costs, overall maintenance, etc, my preference 
would be to perhaps allow those who have already registered 
(production/hybrid) vehicles to maintain those album entries, while 
limiting the addition of new ones that don't particularly meet the 
"new criteria". This might mean that new entries have to pass a 
review/authorization process (again, lots of work).


I fully agree that Mike should be offered some assistance with the 
site no matter how it moves forward in the future. I would perhaps be 
interested in helping figure out how/why the feedback form isn't 
working. I do have some PHP and database experience.


In the interest of full disclosure, I wouldn't be affected by the 
proposed changes to the album:

The boss of Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations [SVO] arm has said it’s a
question of “when, not if” the firm builds an SVR version of the I-Pace
battery-electric SUV.

Michael van der Sande made the admission to Autocar, despite also
acknowledging that a timeline and official development plan for the car is
not yet in place. SVO is prioritising the roll-out of more volume-focused
models.

SVO already develops and builds the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy race cars that
support the Formula E electric race series. “Those cars all come from our
base in Oxford Road,” said van der Sande, “and they’ve taught us a lot. By
the time you fit the roll-cage and race kit, they’re only slightly lighter
than standard.

“But the battery’s duty cycle is very different in racing. We’ve already
learned plenty about battery management, heat management and software
development that could be useful for road cars. When the call comes, we’ll
be ready.”

The eTrophy race car produces no more power than the road-going I-Pace. The
bulk of changes are instead focused on the chassis. But if given the green
light, it’s likely SVO would look to uprate the existing car’s 395bhp output
to bring the 0-62mph time down significantly from 4.8sec.

Such a move would give it the sprinting pace to give Tesla’s latest crop of
Performance-badged variants a run for their money. Alongside chassis
modifications and sporty styling revisions, it would increase the
desirability among enthusiasts, who may feel they aren’t being catered for
by the current crop of electric SUVs.

A decision would hinge on the I-Pace’s sales performance – particularly the
mix of higherspec trim grades leaving showrooms. Jaguar shifted over 9000
examples globally in the first half of this year.

Van der Sande believes making a success of electrification will be Jaguar
Land Rover’s major challenge for the next five years. He said he “absolutely
sees” a mix of propulsion technologies in use, starting with a plug-in
hybrid version of the Range Rover SVAutobiography ...

MSNBC’s climate forum at Georgetown University Thursday morning.

He told MSNBC host Ali Velshi that “we might not own our own cars” by 2050

A video posted by the GOP War Room shows Velshi asking Yang what measures he
sees the world taking to fight climate change by 2050.

“You have this ability to envision the future, right, with your proposals on
universal basic income. You’ve played the whole chess game out and you see
what it looks like on the other end. Play the chess game out on climate
change,” Velshi said. “What does the world look like to you in 2050? What
physically do you think we will do differently than we do today that will
result in us fighting climate change?”

“Well I mentioned before that we might not own our own cars. Our current car
ownership and usage model is really inefficient and bad for the
environment,” Yang said.

“You guys all probably agree with this because you’re quite young,” he told
the Georgetown University crowd, adding an anecdote about driving a 1985
Honda Accord as a young man.

Yang then proposed an alternative to individuals owning their own cars.

“What we’re really selling is not the car, it’s mobility,” he said. “So if
you have mobility that’s then tied into a much more, if you had like, for

The 2019 Tesla Roadster is a four-seater all-electric battery-powered sports
car, made by Tesla, Inc. Tesla has said Tesla Roadster 2019 model will be
able to 0 to 97 km / h (0 to 60 mph) in 1.9 seconds, faster than any
street-legal production car to date in its November 2017 announcement. The
Roadster is the successor to a production car Tesla’s 2008 Roadster. Tesla
notes that Roadster sales will start in 2020, though not before the Tesla
Model Y goes on sale. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said higher performance trim
levels will be available beyond the base specifications, including a model
with ~ 10 cold gas thrusters.

In 2011, at the end of the production run of the original Tesla Roadster,
Elon Musk suggested that a new version of the Roadster, without a Lotus
chassis, would return to production by 2014. The new Roadster was first
teased in 2014. On the time, it was also referred to as Model R. Tesla. In
2015, Elon Musk suggested a new Roadster in 2019, which could accelerate
faster. A tweet from Elon Musk in December 2016 reaffirmed that a second
Roadster was in the works, but still “some years away”. The second Roadster
was designed by Franz von Holzhausen.

The 2020 version of the Roadster was shown in an unexpected moment at the
end of a Tesla Semi event on November 16, 2017 – when the Roadster was
driven out of the back of one of the semi-truck trailers to the song
“Sabotage”. Musk explained the concept as follows: “The point of doing this
is to give gasoline cars a hardcore smackdown. Driving a gasoline sports car
is going to feel like a steam engine with a side of quiche.” The car will
retail for up to $ 200,000, test rides were given at the event to those who
paid the first $ 5,000 of an immediate $ 50,000 deposit to pre-order the
vehicle. Additional information followed after the teaser, such as the
various world record speeds that Tesla said it will break.

In June 2018, Elon Musk unveiled a potential feature called the “SpaceX
option package” for the Roadster. This would add about ten cold gas
thrusters to the car to improve portability; it would include an electric
pump to recharge an air tank used to provide compressed air flowing through
push nozzles to produce cold jet thrust. The air tanks, based on a
“composite overpressure pressure vessel” (COPV) also used in Falcon 9 and
Falcon Heavy rockets, would replace the rear seats. The thrusters would be
used to improve cornering, acceleration, maximum speed, and braking, working
pressure would be 10,000 psi (700 bar).
2019 Tesla Roadster Design

The second-generation 2019 Roadster is a 2 + 2 coupe with a removable glass
roof. It was designed by Franz von Holzhausen, who previously worked in
Mazda and Volkswagen. The 2019 Roadster has a 2 + 2 seating arrangement,
with smaller rear seats for two passengers. The Roadster has three electric
motors, one in front and two at the rear, which allow for all-wheel drive,
and torque vectoring during cornering. Tesla said the vehicle had a 200 kWh
(720 MJ) battery, twice Tesla’s Model S P100D capacity, and gave 1,000 km
(620 miles) range at a single charge at highway speeds. Tesla said the
torque at wheels was 10,000 Nmm (7,400 lbs). The rear wheels are larger than
the front wheels.
2019 Tesla Roadster Performance

The claims made by Musk about the Roadster acceleration, 0–97 km/hr (0-60
mph) in 1.9 seconds and 0-97 km/hr (0-60 mph) in 2.1 seconds for the base
model before adding a rocket thruster option. Its alleged time of 0 to 400 m
(0 to 1⁄4 miles) will be under 9 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 400
km/hr (250 mph). If the Roadster production achieves these performance
numbers, it will outperform the 2017 supercars and set new production car
records, none of which have yet exceeded 0–100 km/hr ( 0-62 mph) in 2.0
seconds or 9.0 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Referring to the performance, Musk
noted, “this is what we are achieving in the prototype”, It’s also noted
that the performance could improve in the production model and that the
numbers stated refer to the expected “base model”.

Thanks to BHPian Reinhard and FIAT3031 for sharing this information with
other enthusiasts.

Earlier this week, a camouflaged test mule of the WagonR had been spotted
testing. After having a closer look at the spy images, it appears that this
could be an all-electric version of the car.

The test mule has a redesigned front fascia but its grille is completely
covered, while the air dam inlet has been left open. It seems that the car

When Ford took its F-150 EV prototype down to the train yard and had the
truck pull over a million pounds, it wanted to show truck fans that an EV
can tow. Since that stunt, Ford has been given little bits of detail on the
F-150 EV. Bill Ford said that the F-150 EV would be able to power tools on a
worksite and would have storage space under the hood.

Linda Zhang is the chief engineer of the Ford F-150 truck, and she talked a
bit about the F-150 EV and why Ford was doing it. Zhang says that Ford wants
to provide a choice in power plants. In addition to an F-150 EV, the
automaker will also offer a hybrid F-150 truck. She also says that Ford
research indicates that buyers want a full-size electric truck.

The engineer says that to convince those skeptical of an electric pickup,
Ford has to show them it can tow and talk up the unique performance of an
all-electric truck. Zhang plays coy on a launch date for the truck stating
that it will be there in a few years. Another Ford exec has said that the
truck will land in 2022.

Ford is also perhaps not so interested in if the everyday truck buyer wants
an electric F-150. Zhang notes that fleet buyers are very interested in the
power and capability of the electric truck. Large corporations and cities
wanting to improve their carbon footprint will likely buy the electric
truck. When asked if there will be a day when all trucks are electric, Zhang
says that she thinks customers will always want a range of power options,
including gas, diesel, hybrid, and electric options.

Behold! America’s first Class 3 electric SUV & SUT

Talk about "white space." If you're looking for a pure electric
off-road-optimized Class 3 four-door pickup or SUV with a 5,000-pound
payload and 7,500-pound towing capacity, you'll have to wait until early
2021 for the Bollinger B1 SUV or B2 pickup. (Oh, and there's no relation to
the snooty Champagne, so pronounce it BOWL-in-jer.)

What possessed Robert Bollinger, who studied industrial design at Carnegie
Mellon University but ended up running and selling a profitable organic
hair-care products business, to start an electric Class 3 truck company? He
owned a farm in the Catskills region of upstate New York and was unhappy
with the truck options available to him. Off-road capability was of high
importance, as was heavy-duty capability and silent green operation. Such a
truck was unavailable, so he looked into building one.

While most folks might struggle to fit 5,000 pounds of anything normal in a
6-foot pickup bed (72 sheets of ¾-inch plywood would do it), clearing the
10,000-pound gross-vehicle-weight rating hurdle for Class 3 greatly
simplifies the task of designing and developing a truck, as airbags and many
other safety systems are not required. Anti-lock brakes are required, and
although stability control is not, Bollinger is developing an ESC system.
The company is also conducting rigorous simulation testing of side-impact
pole crash tests, roof-crush tests, and others to ensure the trucks provide
expected levels of occupant safety.

Of course, energy and budget saved on the airbag front might have been more
than consumed designing a suspension to handle Bollinger's off-road and load
requirements. A cross-linked hydropneumatic suspension shoulders the load
and provides ground clearance that can vary from 10 to 20 inches, thanks in
part to a portal-axle design similar to those used on the Hummer H1 and
G-Class 4x4-Squared, where the shafts delivering power are located above
each wheel's centerline, and they drive the wheels through a gear reduction.
Here, as in the Hummers, braking is via inboard discs at all four corners.

This suspension offers some unique benefits. By cross-linking the corners,
there is no need for an anti-roll bar, and with the flick of a switch this
hydraulic link can be disabled, providing the effect of a disconnected
anti-roll bar for maximum articulation of each wheel. Another great feature:
The self-leveling suspension also effectively alters the spring and damping
rates as the load increases, so Bollinger claims that the ride frequency
(and hence comfort) changes very little from empty to fully loaded.

Power resides in a very large battery pack (74 x 59 x 8 inches and 120
kW-hr) that resides in a structural carbon-fiber box under the floor. It
then flows to front and rear motors that are wound to Bollinger's unique
specifications, allowing them to operate at up to 12,000 rpm (about 2,000
more than most similar motors). A two-speed gearbox is used to permit both
precise torque delivery at low (off-road) speeds and reasonable highway
performance. Motor-control electronics provide a virtual center differential
lock. The motors each produce 307 hp and 334 lb-ft of torque and are said to
be capable of accelerating the trucks to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Company
simulations suggest the big battery will last for 200 miles (on the EPA's
test cycle), or for about 10 hours of off-roading.

That's pretty impressive range given the friction involved in those six
gearboxes, the big knobby tires, and the truck's, ahem, "aerodynamics." (The
drag coefficient reportedly matched a Wrangler's when tested in the same FCA
wind tunnel, but the frontal area is considerably larger.)

Like the Hummer H1, the B1 and B2 offer just four bucket seats, but here
they're separated by a load floor that's even with the rear cargo floor. In
the case of the B2 pickup, there is a Chevy Avalanche-esque "midgate" that
folds flat into the rear load floor, and the back glass can either flip up
or be removed. Removing the rear buckets is a simple matter of unlatching
and lifting them out to provide a 9.5-foot bed. Another party trick both

I totally agree with Bruce. It makes sense for the EVAlbum to be unique
conversion BEVs. All other EVs are not needed on the list or can be put in
other forums.

support from the manufacturer. However, aging production EVs, that have lost
their support or their part sourcing has died up, can become modified
production EVs. Thus, a listing of how the owner is diy supporting their
'classic' EV
would be valuable for others to know.

*Certain vehicles should be moved/off-loaded evalbum.com to other ownership,
and let evalbum.com focus on just EVs, specifically, converted/modified EVs.
Then evalbum.com site maintenance would be much more manageable.

*1st move all hybrids (plugin or not) to a popular forum of that model to
manage.
There is currently a boat-load/a-lot of non-EV prius listings
that could easily be handled by a prius forum. The same with other hybrids.
Since fcvs are essentially also a hybrid that consumes fossil fuel, they
should be blocked from listing on evalbum.com and referred to list on their
favorite fcv forum.

At some point, Tesla roadster gen1 EVs are going to lose manufacturer
support, That is when the old classic EV would become owner diy supported, and
thus
a modified production EV, whose listing of what changes the owner has made to
continue supporting it, would be good to know.+

As one who has several vehicles on there and some that are not yet, I would
definitely welcome the EV Album's ability to continue display everything
going on in non-factory standard land.
For example, I installed two complete Leaf packs into my US Electricar
truck, so it has been going strong since about 17,500 mi as daily driver
and work horse, even towing a dolly with my Leaf...
Another project is converting a 2002 RAV4 EV from NiMH to Lithium after it
did 225k mi.
Plenty material in need of a good home...
EV Album sounds ideal for that!

The Chevrolet Bolt EV first arrived for the 2017 model year, with additional
range added for the 2020 model year. As GM’s only all-electric vehicle
offering, the Bolt has a number of rivals to contend with, including the
Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. With that
in mind, the upcoming 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV will need to bring its A-game,
which is exactly what’s previewed in the following photos.

For reference, the 2021 model year introduces a new model year enhancement
(MCE) for the nameplate, also known popularly as a model refresh or
facelift. Outside, the new Chevrolet Bolt EV will feature new styling,
starting with the two-tiered lighting scheme that seems to be more and more
commonplace in Chevy’s latest design language.

We’ve seen this two-tiered lighting scheme before, most notably with the new
Chevrolet Blazer and Chevrolet Trailblazer, both of which feature thin upper
lights and rounded lower lights. Meanwhile, the current Chevrolet Bolt EV
has a different sort of two-tiered lighting setup, with prominent upper
headlamps and smaller corner lamps lower in the fascia.

To note, the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV will offer styling that differs from the
Chevrolet Bolt EUV, the brand’s up-and-coming all-electric compact “utility”
vehicle, which will help to differentiate the two models beyond the obvious
size, proportions, and segment differences.

The new Bolt EV tail lamp housings will also get a reshape. Beyond the
lighting changes, it looks as though the entirety of the front and rear
fascias will get several significant changes, offering a dramatic styling
update for the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV.

We also got an enticing look at the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV interior, which,
as we covered previously, is due for some rather substantial changes with
this latest facelift. The new interior should include new seats, as well as
a new design too.

Finally, with regard to the powertrain, the 2021 Bolt EV will likely receive
a decent bump in range-per-charge, adding on top of the model’s previous
21-mile increase applied for the 2020 model year. The Bolt currently offers
an EPA-rated 259 miles between plugs.

Look for the refreshed Bolt EV to arrive sometime in the fall of the 2020
calendar year.

One of the biggest advantages of electric vehicles is that they can
potentially have far more packaging flexibility than combustion-engine cars.
Companies have been taking advantage of this, as you can see in Tesla’s
twin-trunk designs and Volkswagen’s volume-maximising reborn electric
Microbus. A startup called Canoo is taking a similar approach as VW, with an
EV that’s a clever study in the maximisation of interior volume. You know, a
van.

Though it’s not autonomous, though the company says they’re working on that,
the room-on-wheels design is exactly what future autonomous vehicles should
be (there may be a book out that says just that) and even in its current,
human-driven form, the design looks incredibly flexible and usable.

The Canoo was designed by Richard Kim, the designer behind BMW’s very
innovative i3 and the sleek i8, and while there are clear similarities to
Kim’s earlier designs, the Canoo shows a much purer design, an unashamed,
streamlined, heavily-windowed box on a skateboard, an envelope that
surrounds a very versatile and appealing interior.

The front and rear profiles of the Canoo are just about identical; were it
not for the position of the rear-view mirrors and colours of the lights, it
would be hard to tell which end was front and which was the rear. It’s sort
of like a very modernised VW Bus, or perhaps even an enlarged and updated
Zündapp Janus.

The rear of the vehicle has a U-shaped bench seat, with what appears to be
seat belts for three passengers. There’s also some flip-down jump seats
behind the front seats as well, adding two more places to sit:

If there are seat belts provided for the side-mounted seats, you could have
five on the rear bench, plus the two jump seats, plus the front seats, for a
total of nine seats, which seems about right.

There are some cubbies under the rear seats and in the doors, but it looks
like there are no strictly-designated cargo areas, though there is certainly
room for plenty of cargo on the large, flat floor area.

It also appears that the rear bench can fold to make room for bulky cargo,
like that dude’s asphalt-coloured surfboard, and it looks like there are two
little modules in the side panel there, one containing a clock and the other
having what I think is a small planter?

It also appears that the front seats can rotate, Captian’s Chair-style,
which is always a good thing for a van. There’s also plenty of windows in
the roof as well, and the whole interior feels incredibly airy and open. It
looks like it has lots of camping potential as well, and while I haven’t
actually touched any of the interior materials, these pictures do make it
look like they could be fairly hard-wearing and hopefully easily washable.

The Canoo uses conventional hinged doors instead of a more van-like sliding
door, which is sort of a curious choice, but not necessarily a bad one. The
only really glaring bad choice I can see here is in the driver’s controls,
with a steering wheel that’s not a wheel at all, but a square frame:

Visibility looks great, sure, with that extra low window below the beltline,
but does anyone actually like driving with a rectangle?

The centre of the not-wheel has an airbag with a lot of text I’m pretty sure
you don’t need to have so constant and prominent, while the instrumentation
appears to be on the beltline band separating the upper and lower
windshields.

There’s a large volume of space in front of the instrument panel that I
suppose could be used for cargo, at the risk of blocking that lower window.

The fundamental design of the Canoo I think is great. It’s logical and
practical yet feels sleek and futuristic as well. This is what Tesla’s Model
X should have been, really, instead of a chubby SUV with fancy

Both the Fiat 500 hatchback and convertible are disappearing for the 2020
model year. This includes the 500e electric and 500 Abarth, so if you are
thinking of picking up a Fiat 500, your options are about to be severely
limited.

Although the Fiat 500 is ending production for 2020, don’t expect it to
disappear overnight. The current inventory will see them hanging out on
dealer lots into 2020, it’s just a question of how long into the new year
they’ll stick around.

Launched back in 2011, the Fiat 500 sold 46,999 units at its peak back in
2012 and then sales slowed. A lot. Through June of this year, all of 1,692
units were sold in the U.S. making it anything but a hot seller.

Slow sales likely played a factor in deciding to discontinue the model that
relaunched the brand stateside. It is, however, Fiat’s most recognizable
model and it’s not even the brand’s worst seller.

The slowest seller so far this year is the 500L, which sold only 399 units
through June. Second worst goes to the 500X crossover with 500 units
followed by the 124 Spider with 1,484 units. The entire Fiat lineup is
selling less than what the 500 once managed all on its own.

Fiat hasn’t said anything about a possible replacement for the 500, though
the rumor mill is hot for the idea of an EV taking its place at some point.
There’s also just as strong a chance that a replacement isn’t coming at all.

that, on average, Americans spend about $397 per year on vehicle maintenance
and repairs. The poll also found that the amount spent was age-related and
that younger vehicle owners spent more than older. Millennials and those who
fall into Generation Z (ages 18-34) paid an average of $466 per year on
vehicle maintenance and repairs (M). By contrast, those polled over 55
years of age averaged less than a dollar a day, just $330 per year in such
costs. One could conclude that younger vehicle owners drive more, though the
poll did not examine the link between miles driven and maintenance and
repair costs.

Would you give up your car and share someone else’s? What about letting
others borrow yours to help pay for it?

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been told over the years about
car sharing schemes set to revolutionise how we drive.

It barely needs saying, but despite the bold claims none has quite pulled
off an Airbnb or Uber quite yet.

The idea found itself back on the agenda this week, with Labour’s pledge to
put 30,000 electric cars on Britain’s roads that could be used by members of
publicly-owned community car clubs.

Serendipitously, that was just a few days after I met up with Andre Haddad,
the CEO of the major US car-sharing player Turo, which is making a big push
into the UK.

Tapping into the Airbnb ethos, Turo connects those happy to rent out their
car and those who wish to pay to use it.

Most people’s cars sit for hours or days on end unused, the argument goes,
so why not let other people pay to use them when they would otherwise be
languishing on the drive or road, or parked at the station? This can either
help cover the cost of owning a car – or even turn you a profit.

Similarly, car hire is a fairly joyless experience dominated by big faceless
global corporations, so why not save some money – avoid the rip-offs at the
desk – and rent a car from a fellow citizen instead?

Befitting a start-up CEO, Andre is an enthusiastic ambassador for Turo - the
world’s biggest car-sharing platform apparently – and also it turns out a
bit of a car nut.

Before we got down to discussing Turo, we spent a good 20 minutes talking
cars and the conversation frequently veered off in that direction.

He uses Turo to rent out his cars at home, including a Porsche 911 Carrera
S, full suite of Teslas, Models S, X and 3, Audi R8, and another 911
convertible.

That chimes with his desire to make Turo a car sharing platform designed to
be cheaper than and as convenient as car hire, and also one where people can
go for an experience and enthusiasts can help cover the cost of owning
interesting cars.

Keep your car on the road for less with online MOT and tax reminders and
help finding servicing

As convincing as he sounds, however, I did have to ask why if car sharing is
such a great idea it doesn’t feel like it’s really taken off?

Andre is keen to point out growth in the US is rapid and that in Britain
Turo has more than 147,000 people signed up and 7,000 vehicles listed.

It says that its average British owner - most of whom are based in London -
makes £50 per day from letting their car and does so for five to seven days
a month, although that is for the most popular and cheaper economy models.

Nonetheless, compared to overall car usage that’s a drop in the ocean.

The problem for car sharing firms says Andre is twofold: firstly, you need
to make sure the experience is seamless, trusted and convenient; and,
secondly, unlike Airbnb (renting houses), or Uber (driving minicabs), which
facilitate something private individuals have been doing for years, Turo and
its rivals are effectively creating a whole new business model for
individuals.

Turo has tackled this with Airbnb-style host and guest ratings, solid
insurance, and trying to get to ‘critical mass’ in terms of cars on offer.
Meanwhile, its new Turo Go system enables people to make near-instant
bookings and owners to give them access via smartphone.

Rather than meeting renters to hand over keys, owners can remotely approve
their rental request and they can then gain access to a key stored in the
car with a smartphone app - similar to how short-term car rental firm ZipCar
works. 

Some owners may still prefer to meet those borrowing their car, however, as
Andre says he does.

Turo's insurance covers problems and damage, cars are meant to be rented out
and returned clean and full of fuel and it recently started offering a
popular add-on cleaning fee.

Those who bust the rules - either as hosts or guests - get poor ratings and
get kicked off the platform.

So, back to the original question, would I do this?

I’m too into cars to give up ownership, but I can see how those who are far
less interested in how, what and where they are driving could do so, if a
system was cheap and convenient enough.

In its beginnings, as Mike said, 20 years ago, circa yr 2000, the internet
was still
new. Mike's efforts brought a connection of all the EV owners together. In
2000,
there really weren't production EVs to be had. Being able to compare
conversion
EVs (how fast, far, what components, etc.) was right at one's finger tips on
evalbum.com .

Now circa yr 2020, evalbum's purpose, focus, and use, should be the same.
People get complacent thinking why convert when you can buy a production
EV. There are still people, world-wide, converting EVs. With so many new
(noobie) production EV drivers, there is a need for EValbum.com to stay
focused on EV-conversions and modified production EVs.

Having said that, and realizing both Mike and I are aging, it would be wise
to
consider what today's use of EValbum.com is and what it is not.
Reducing/paring-down evalbum.com 's duties would make it easier to maintain.

My following statements will step on some toes which will raise their ire,
but to keep Mike from being inundated with the avalanche of new production
EV drivers everyone can see IS coming, changes should be made to let Mike
handle the work load, and make passing evalbum.com on to the next/younger
caretaker, not an albatross/cross to bear that it currently is.

IMO, evalbum.com should be for EVs-only (ones that plug into a grid for
electric
power). Not hevs, pih, fcvs, etc. An EV-conversion is essentially a modified
vehicle.
Most production EVs aren't allowed to be modified, else they lose warranty
or
support from the manufacturer. However, aging production EVs, that have lost
their support or their part sourcing has died up, can become modified
production
EVs. Thus, a listing of how the owner is diy supporting their 'classic' EV
would be
valuable for others to know.

*1st move all hybrids (plugin or not) to a popular forum of that model to
manage.

Since fcvs are essentially also a hybrid that consumes fossil fuel, they

be blocked from listing on evalbum.com and referred to list on their
favorite fcv forum.

So what of the unmodified production EVs listed on evalbum.com ?
That begs the question, why are they there? Is it for owners' bragging
rights?

Definitely useful.  I talk to a LOT of people at car shows (I show my EV F250 a 
lot) who are considering converting some vehicle they really like.  I always 
suggest they search the EV Album to see if/how other people have converted that 
vehicle.
