It's similar for streaming films. Maybe worse. You would think that
companies would want to make it as easy as possible to gain customers.
Well, apparently not with EV charging (and streaming films).

How is it that we can shop anywhere, and have no trouble paying with any of
half a dozen methods. Yet to charge an EV, there are all these artificial hoops
we have to jump through?

Yeah, you'd think. What a hassle you went through there, and for zilch.

Yet nearly every filling station takes credit cards, and they just plain
work. The most fuss you get from them is "key in your zip code." What's so
different about EV charging?

It's almost like the US charging chains are trying to get people to give up
on EVs.

We don't often use public charging here unless it's free. With 370-400km
range, who really needs it?

On the few occasions when we've paid, the Chargemap website has led us to a
working charging point, and their RFID card has gotten the charge started
without any trouble. Maybe we're just lucky.

[EVDL] Level 2 on road charging complications

2023-09-01 Thread Mark Hanson via EV
Hi folks
I drove to Atlanta from Roanoke Va in my Tesla Y for Robot Battles at
Dragoncon.com and tried charging at a Level 2 “Loop” charging station in the
downtown Peachtree garage. I spent an hour downloading the app, loading their
proprietary loop system with my credit card, googled a phone number, called
them, couldn’t get it going. Then a guy charging his Bolt was able to jump
through the hoops for about a half hour and get his going. Turned out the Loop
software didn’t like my iPhone version operating system. The charging station
had a card tap reader but wouldn’t read any credit cards. I’ve run into
similar situations with other proprietary level 2 40c/kwh or so in Richmond
Semaconnect etc. Seems nowadays with credit card readers this messy charging
process could be a *whole* lot simpler.
Like the Tesla superchargers I go to on the highway.
Stay Charged,
Mark
