Re: [EVDL] SHielded 1/0

2016-02-03 Thread Rick Beebe via EV
EVWest sells it for $9.49/foot. EVTV is $11.95/foot. I doubt you'll find
anything significantly less expensive. I elected to use unshielded to
save some money and also measured very carefully by using rope before I
ordered the cable. I still ordered a couple feet extra and I have a
single 18" piece left over. It wasn't cheap but it also wasn't the most
significant expense by far.

You don't need to stress over the connectors, though. They're all the
same whether you use shielded cable or not.

Re: [EVDL] SHielded 1/0

Ah, that is quite a different beast. I read your request as shielded
input-output cable.

Note that besides shielding, the other best way to avoid noise from high
power cables is to twist the power cables together,

so the magnetic fields generated by the two opposite flowing currents
cancel each other out as much as possible, which is not the case

in mere shielding them.

Shielding only works if the noise is *capacitive* coupled from the
cable, this requires proximity, high impedance and high freq noise.

So, know what your noise source is before you spend a lot of money and
effort for no improvement.

I rather not use because of the price.

However, because we are doing the vehicle for a SAE Design competition, if
we use shielded HV cable then we do not need to put into conduit.

We need to ground the shield to the chassis. I thought there would be some
sort of connector for that.

I buy small quantities of heavy gauge cable from auto audio stores.
Shielding? You can DIY that for cost effectiveness.

For large quantities, shopping around, you will find that non-price terms
are important, shipping time and cost, shielding specs etc. Cable is a
commodity.
