Ok, you are talking about trucks. Battery electrics can be suitable for local drayage. There have been mixed results, but the technology is improving. For two port technology reviews that are relatively recent, but not completely up-to-date, look for technology reviews prepared by the California Air Resources Board, and a joint one by the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. - Mark Sent from my Fuel Cell powered iPhone > On Apr 26, 2020, at 7:34 AM, Peri Hartman via EV wrote: > > The situation is a result of how the Port of Seattle operates. The situation is a result of how the Port of Seattle operates. Here's one article that is pretty up-to-date: https://www.truckinginfo.com/278641/seattles-independent-port-drivers-get-more-time-to-buy-clean-trucks Most important, Port of Seattle uses independent truck drivers, who provide their own tractors. About 13 years ago, the city and port came up with some regulations, the "clean truck program," which were supposed to go into effect this year, but the deadline has been extended. Truckers are strongly resisting. Some have invested and complied. Others say they can't afford to invest in new technology. The truckers say they get slim margins on loads, not leaving enough to buy new equipment. Some also claim newer trucks aren't as reliable as old ones. None of the above even considers e-tractors. That's a hard sell to an independent trucker who may also want to use their tractor for long haul. In my opinion, if Port of Seattle wants to attain zero emissions, they are going to have to subsidize e-tractors or even provide them and outright ban anything else. Re: [EVDL] (no ice= clean air) % Happy Earth Day %> Consider An EV
Yes, quite a number of companies are doing buses, with mixed results. Short distance drayage are getting there (hopefully the Tesla and Nikola trucks will prove successful). But for the uses of really really heavy things, there hasn’t been much success. For airport tugs, there has been an unmet need, so if you know someone that has a product, have them contact me offline. - Mark Sent from my Fuel Cell powered iPhone > On Apr 25, 2020, at 5:47 PM, Willie via EV wrote: > > > >> On 4/25/20 6:24 PM, Mark Abramowitz via EV wrote: >> According to a colleague at the California Air Resources Board, tugs are one >> area that they have not been able to find anyone that can provide a full >> battery solution (which I assume is what you meant, because fuel cells are >> an electric technology). >> If you know any of these companies, there is funding available. That's good news. I've also heard push back from the drivers, who typically own their tractors. Many have fairly recently bought tractors for on the order of $100K and say they can't afford to switch for many years. I think the Port is going to have to subsidize this somehow or it might take 10-20 years. Peri -- Original Message -- From: "Peter C. Thompson via EV" To: ev@lists.evdl.org Cc: "Peter C.
