Check you settings - specifically
Mail Preferences - HTML Mail - Plain Text Mode - HTML Mode
Make sure that setting is set to Show HTML if present.
If that is set to one of the other settings Evolution appears to ignore
meeting requests.

There is obviously a problem with the way the Mail Send/Security dialog
maps to types of SMTP.
I have therefore opened a bug - #302432 - for this issue.

587 is for mail submission over SMTP. You should not talk SSL to it,
instead you connect, say EHLO, and then do STARTTLS to start an
encrypted session. This is generally was evolution does if you set the
SSL/Encrypted whatever to Whenever possible.

Additionally, or alternatively, since the 1.2.x build you used was from
Suse, they might have modified it to work right on their platform,
whereas the more generic Ximian builds have not been treated in that
