What about a *drop-down* list with icons? Similar to the New button in 1.4.x versions, just without the drop-down being a separate button. We can have any number of components then -- it won't need to be taller in either direction. A quick mockup based on tigerts screenshot:

Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason to confining these component buttons to the left pane? What about placing them outside the left and right panes? While it's not as pretty or appealing, has anyone considered using a tabbed control for this? Each view (mail, calendar, contacts, etc)
