Sounds like we're talking about multipart/alternative mail here (ie. the
mail item contains both an HTML version and a plain text version, and
the MUA is expected to display whichever version it prefers).
If the HTML displays badly there could be two reasons:
1. HTML is correct, but MUA's HTML
