Maybe you mentioned before what version of Ubuntu you're running, but I
missed it. I'm using Ubuntu 17.04 and I have Evolution 3.22.6
installed, so it's not true that there's nothing new available in the
Ubuntu repositories.

Now, if you're using an older version of Ubuntu (for example Ubuntu
16.04 LTS), then you'll get the version of Evolution that was released
in early 2016 (plus bug fixes). The entire point of an LTS release is
that they don't install major updates--that's why people use it.

Evolution is part of the GNOME system; it's not very easy to upgrade
Evolution without also upgrading the rest of GNOME. Usually Evolution
is expected to work with the current and previous version of GNOME...
but you're multiple versions of GNOME behind, so upgrading just
Evolution and keeping the rest of GNOME at that older version will be
problematic.

You can look at the Gnome3 Staging PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/ubuntu/gnome3-staging?field.series_filter=xenial

It appears to have Evolution 3.20.5 installed, which is newer than what
you have but still not all that new. I can't say how reliable that
upgrade is.

The best way to get a newer Evolution is to upgrade to a newer release
of Ubuntu.

Re: [Evolution] Automatization Outlook Users migrations to Evolution

2017-09-25 Thread David Burleigh
When I switched from Ubuntu-based Linux Mint to Debian Testing I was
delighted to find that Evolution 3.22 was included, and since then it
was updated to 3.24 and now 3.26. It was a bit of work to get
everything installed on Debian that I was used to running on Mint, but
I learned a lot in the process and now I have a very fast and stable
system.

Hi,
I guess it's not related to the migration process, thus kind of
off-topic for this thread.

Right, these questions come semi-regularly on this list, mostly from
Ubuntu users, and the answer is mostly the same: ask Ubuntu maintainers
and/or on Ubuntu forums (this applies generally for distro-specific
questions, not only for Ubuntu). There had been also answers about some
gnome3-staging ppa or what it was, I do not recall, I do not use
Ubuntu.

Feel free to read these two Wiki pages:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Building
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Flatpak

The first describes why the dependency on evolution-data-server is so
tricky that "getting new Evolution" means much more than "getting only
new Evolution". The second makes things easier, but has its downsides
too (also described there).

That's the version in the *buntu repositories, from what I've seen,
nothing newer. It's what I'm running now.

Is the only option for a newer version to build from source? I've built
more than a few packages over the years, but Evolution's dependencies
are fairly strong. Looks like a simple 47 step process :-)

Is there a PPA somewhere of a more recent version?

Thanks.

Hi,
the 3.18.5 is truly old. There had been added some autoconfiguration
stuff, for which I've been promised by the author to write also a
documentation, but it didn't happen, as far as I know. The
corresponding bug report is (committed for 3.24.0):
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=773156

The old way is to have preconfigured .source files and change them to
your needs (the above method works similarly, but the distribution is
more automated). Here is written where evolution stores its data:
https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/data-storage.html.en
while the most important is
  ~/.config/evolution/sources/
where the accounts store their configuration. You can configure an
Exchange account (I suppose you'll use evolution-ews) on one machine
and see what .source files had been added to that folder. Then you edit
them and store there correct user name (and other information related
to respective users) and then you'll distribute those files on the
machines. I suggest to use Offline Global Address List, if possible.

Some users have even scripts which do the configuration.

You can eventually use GNOME Online Accounts to configure EWS (Exchange
Web Services) account, if you do not want too much control on the
settings.

[Please don't top-post on this list, it tends to mangle threads]

You definitely want the latest version of Evolution you can get for
your platform.

I have no experience with Outlook, nor Exchange as I've managed to
survive an entire 40-year IT career without ever using either of them.
However I'm sure plenty of people on the list can help you. In the
meantime, a quick Google search throws up several links, though beware
that some are out of date.

Best of luck.

Patrick, thank you for response. In last system image i have Evolution
3.18.5, but finally perhaps will be newer. I have more than 10k users, but
many of them don't have IT background. Perhaps they can do Evolution
configuration with instruction, but automatic migration will be better for
me in many aspects. I search posibilities how can i do it, if it possible?

I don't know if anyone has done that, but as an absolute minimum it is
*essential* to say what version of Evolution you will be using.

[Evolution] Automatization Outlook Users migrations to Evolution

2017-09-23 Thread PBB Droid
Hi everyone,

I need to migrate many of Outlook users to Evolution with Exchange plugin
due to change Win10 to Linux (Ubuntu or Debian). Main elements as Active
Directory and Exchange stay without changes.

Is it possible to build automatic porcedures based on Active Directory
information to create Evolution configuration without another user
activity? I think abount migration users to Evolution with first login to
new system.

I not found any information in Evolution documentation abount that
posibility.

Sorry, for my english.
