This sounds like a problem with your SMTP server. HELO is a very basic SMTP command and initiates the SMTP transaction from the client to the server. Which SMTP server is your ISP providing? Can you use other mail clients with that server without any problems? You can turn on debugging in

Which is what I said at the end. I understand the want for it, I debate the suggestion that it should be default for IMAP users, as it is more likely to cause problems. This is a personal preference, not by any means a limitation. I think you may be looking at a catch-22 situation.
