My CIO has asked me to attend a meeting in which IBM is going to propose
outsourcing our e-mail services, taking over for our 350 Exchange 2000
mailboxes.

I'm looking for arguments to marshal against outsourcing. So far, what
I've got is:
* security: We use Clearswift MIMEsweeper to block incoming (and
outgoing) messages containing viruses or executable files (.bat, .exe,
etc.). This being IBM, I'm sure they can protect against viruses,
though.
* disaster recovery: Our disaster site is updated in real time.
During the blackout in August e-mail was up twenty minutes after I
arrived at the DR site. Again, probably not a potent line item against
IBM.
* regulatory: we have some regulatory requirements for keeping
all records (including e-mail) on site for seven years.
* integration: Our CRM solution integrates directly into
Exchange, adding contacts directly to the users' mailboxes.
* performance: I have trouble seeing how performance would be
adequate when the mail server is off site.
*   price:  250 users.  350 mailboxes.  140GB/month (according to
the Journal folders). That can't be cheap.
* legacy: Seven years of preexisting e-mail, spread out among
mailboxes and pst files. About 200GB all told.

What else am I missing?

My answer is 200. I will have Outlook published in a Citrix farm at this
remote location. 200 people will access outlook from that site. The
Outlook application will be published on Terminal Servers (Citrix). From
the servers Outlook will need to find an exchange server 1 of which is

Hello again. Here's another question I'd like to throw out there.

In using W2K, Exchange 5.5 (SP4) OFFICE XP on the client side. Without
manually for each individual mailbox on our exchange server, is there a
system-wide rule or 3rd party utility that we can use to create a folder
inside each of our user's mailbox, have the rule then move items from
within their INBOX to this folder and have it expire/deleted after a
certain period of time?

1) OWA
2) VPN and OST file synchronization
3) RPC over HTTP (assuming you're running Exchange 2003/Outlook 2003)

You may also want to ensure that the downloaded messages weren't deleted
from

More than one domain in the same AD / Exchange.

Anyone know how this could bee done.
I.E.
First DC have AD - the second DC is Exchange.

I would like to have more than one domain in the AD so i i.e. can make
to
user with the same name
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]

on the Exchange they have ofcouse there own mailbox

When I install a AD on a Windows 2000 DC i make the domain ie.
domain01.com so far so good - and now i can make user like
[EMAIL PROTECTED],
but how do I add the second domain (domain02.com) to the AD to be able
to
make a username like [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Exchange 2003 Outlook 2003 connectivity issue

Each morning for the last 5, I have ended up rebooting my Exchange 2003
(on windows 2003 member server)because my Outlook clients (xp and 2003)
recieve messages stating that outlook is downloading data from the
exchange server, on non cached setups it just sits like this, on cached
versions a red exclamation appears in the system tray. If you right
click
and choose cancel server request, it looks like all is connected for a
minute or so, then it happens again no updates take place. If I right
click on the outlook icon in the client system tray, it shows three
connections to exchange server mail at least one of which will show
multiple errors and an extended response time. Synchronization error
log
just shows Network problems are preventing connection to the microsoft
exchange server. I have windows 2000 sp4, and Windows xp SP1(fully
updated) clients mosly running Outlook 2003 some in exchange cached mode
and some not cached, as well as a couple Outlook xp clients. All have
same issue.

The server is available (shared folders, remote desktop). The Event log
does not show any unusual errors - nothing that marks the start of this
issue. The Outlook 2003 client shows connected but with a red
exclamation
on the system tray icon. - does not shift to disconnected.

The Exchange server is a dual xeon 2.4 ghz, 2 gig ram. Processor usage
does not go above 20%, memory usage is normal, and the server has only
one
nic (gigabit) on a managed gigabit switch. The whole network is only
about 35 computers and three servers. The whole thing sits behind a
checkpoint firewall, so the lan users are not going through a router or
firewall to reach the server. All users are experiencing the same thing
at the same time.

After I reboot, all is well until the next morning sometime. I have
Virus
protection on the server but it is set to exclude the exchsrvr
directories
and subdirectories. I have GFI Mail Essentials and GFI Mail Security
running I have tried disabling GFI Mail Essentials (stopped Services),
but the problem still came back. Automated Backup has been suspended
until I resolve the issue (arcserve brightstor).

I upgraded office xp to 2003 in about three sets over the course of 5
days. It was only after the last set that I started seeing this issue,
but
all are installed off the same shared folder using the same Group
Policy.
I had two computers on the Beta 2 of Office 2003 for months did not see
this issue.

Exchange Server has been 2003 since the RTM release.

I don't know what else to look at - anybody have any advice?

he
wants to know if he can rename the domain to domain.com during this

Hi all,
Scott is correct, i'm not upgrading the NT4 box with Exchange 5.5 on it.
This will remain on the NT4 BDC as is, in a mixed mode situation. I have
the new kit as the PCD now and will upgrade it to Win2K. Then install AD
with the new domain name. I believe now the netbios domain name will be
retained so exchange should continue to function as normal on the BDC.

I have just built the scenario in my test room and made the switch and
all
seems to run fine. I will now install Exchange 2000 on the Win2k box and
migrate the users over to Exchange 2000 from 5.5.

Thanks for all your help..invaluable as always.

When I try to connect from Outook to Exchange with RPC over HTTP, my

Configuration
Made a new profile - named it OutlookRPC.
Add a new e-mail account - in server type choose Microsoft Exchange
Server.
As Microsoft Excange Server : https://webmail.test.dk (this is the same
URL i use when I connect to the OWA from home and this is working fine,
with formbased logon)
In username - my username
In more settings - Exchange Proxy settings
Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for exchange :
webmail.test.dk
Selected Connect using SSL only
Selected Mutually authenticated the session when connecting with SSL
and in the Principle name for proxy server :
msstd:testexch.corp.test.dk
In Proxy authentication selected Basic authentication

I do belive that I have made everything right - but when I try to
connect
my username and password are rejected no matter what I write. I use the
samme username/password to connect to OWA and to logon at my work PC.

Any1 have any ideas where to look for a way to find a fix for the
error
I have that the password/username are rejected.

RE: Password Changing

2003-10-28 Thread Kevinm[MVP]
You need to check the check box to inherit permissions on the sec tab.
That should make you happier.

Subject: OT: Password Changing

My company is about to implement a security policy that forces users to
change their passwords every 60 Days.
Problem some of our user accounts do not have self listed under security
permissions within the ADUC. This user gets access denied when trying to
change his/her password.

This is an upgraded Windows 2000 Domain upgraded from NT 4.0 to
Windows
2000

All Dc's Are Currently Windows 2000 SP4 and we are in Native Mode.
Note we have tried to add Self under security but once replication
occurs it
removes Self.

Has anyone ever heard of this ?

TIA,
Joshua

My advice would be to find someone who does know Linux (a student,
maybe?)
and have them assist you in setting up a Linux/SpamAssassin box. There
are
many, many guides available on the Internet to do this sort of thing.

___

If you are a pure Microsoft shop I would consider the costs of moving
from a
standardized environment for just one product.

It is not just an issue of today's installation, of course you will need
to
learn linux/unix spamassassin and sendmail, which is fun, and then learn
how
to support it. You should also consider how the company will support
non
standard NOS in the future i.e. when you leave, especially if
spamassasin
becomes the gateway, therefore becoming a critical system.

I learnt UNIX at UC Berkeley, so don't take me as a Microsoft centric
person, but I have seen the implications of this move. Network
Environments
that are mainly Microsoft standard and start adding a couple of free
Linux
boxes for a saving of a couple of grand tend to end up spending a lot
more
in the long run.

RE: RPC over HTTP - help needed

2003-10-28 Thread Kevinm[MVP]
Are you using SSL?? With a store bought Cert. I got about the same from
the cast and went back to hunting on mine. Bought a cert and it seems to
be working now.. My home grown cert would not install on the client
side.

You could try installing the cert with IE by connecting to https:// OWA
?? might help you. Have you watched it connect by holding down CTRL and
right clicking the outlook icon in the task bar by the time??

I did see the webcast and checked my configuration 2 more times - and
still same result.
I asked a question and the answer was that i should check that basic
auth.
was on - and it is - so I am still in the same boat, no luck to connect
to
the exchange server - the username/password are stil rejected.

If there was a solution in the webcast I missed it :-)
