RE: Open Relay Issue
I believe this is an issue that would require those users to use authenticated SMTP... do they not have the option to authenticate to the smtp server (in this case your exchange server) in their client? -Original Message- From: Network Issues [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2002 3:20 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Open Relay Issue Goodafternoon All, I was informed yesterday that we were blacklisted by ORDB.ORG as they had determined our email server was an Open Relay. Well, I verified that this was the case and proceeded to research a way of closing the hole. I finally decided to heed the advice of the following article and reconfigured our Exchange box (http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7696). Unfortunately, since that change was made I have had a few ticked off users. Basically, these are internal Macintosh users using Outlook Express to access their email. To make a long story short, Outlook for Macintosh will not run on their Mac's due to conflicts with some software. Outlook Express is configured to access Exchange via POP3. Each time they attempt to send email outside of the company, they get a 550 Relaying Not Allowed error message. The same issue occurs with an AS400-based web app we are running. It sends out email replies to customers who make reservations online. It too uses POP3 to access the Exchange box and it also receives the same error message. What can I do to enable these systems to access our Exchange box via POP3 and not open the security hole that makes our system an Open Relay? Re: Open Relay Issue
Can you allow internal IP addresses to relay? Or, you can set up for smtp auth for the Macs... I am not sure about the commands that you would have to do for the web based app thingy you have though ;) ~ -K.Borndale Network Administrator Sybari Software 631.630.8569 -direct dial 631.439.0689 -fax http://www.sybari.com "One man's ceiling is another man's floor" |+---> || Network Issues | || <[EMAIL PROTECTED]| || om> | || Sent by: | || bounce-exchange-148870@ls| || .swynk.com | || | || | || 01/03/2002 04:20 PM | || Please respond to| || "Exchange Discussions" | || | |+---> >-| | | | To: "Exchange Discussions" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> | | cc: | | Subject: Open Relay Issue | >-| Goodafternoon All, I was informed yesterday that we were blacklisted by ORDB.ORG as they had determined our email server was an Open Relay. When I do the necessary steps to block relaying the POP3 feature does not work. POP3 Users complain that they cannot connect to the Exchange server. Maybe I am doing something wrong or missing a step. Here is what I am doing: 1.Internet Mail Service is set to: Reroute incoming SMTP mail (required for POP3/IMAP4 support) Routing sent to: mydomain.com (we use 5 domain names) Route to: 2.Specify the hosts and clients that can route mail when the following conditions are met - Hosts and client with these addresses is checked off but no ip address information or Mask is entered. 3.Hosts and clients connecting to these internal addresses is checked off and the ip address of our Exchange server is added. (If I uncheck this box I cannot connect via POP3). Is there a way to prohibit Relaying yet allow users to connect using the POP3 service? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
