RE: IronMail

2003-10-30 Thread John Matteson
We are looking at the product, the weighted spam filtering seem to be a
lot better choice than the simple filters other products use. The
selling point for us geeks here is the security functions for OWA and
the ability of a user to release their own mail from inbound holding via
a web interface.

The steep price for our configuration of choice is the sticking point
with management.

Has anyone reviewed, tested, or used the IronMail appliance from Cipher
Trust (http://www.ciphertrust.com/index.html)? We are interested in its
spam filtering and security capabilities.

It is a pricey solution. I suppose if you were to add up the cost of each
solution it provides from different vendors as well as the system itself, it
would be close. Have you looked at MXtreme solution from Borderware?

RE: IronMail

2003-10-30 Thread Walker, Heath
We are also evaluating the solution. It offers the SLS (statistical
lookup service) where messages are analyzed and then compared against an
external dbase to see if they have gone out to large numbers of users
(spam). This appears to be a very quick and efficient process. They
are of course only leveraging the information other Ironmail boxes
collect. I know of no issues where we have a false positive w/ this
functionality. Of course we had to exempt some business related list
servers.

We are using a feature where a number of criteria have to fail then
those failures are weighted and based on an aggregate value that you
define whether the mail is or is not flagged as spam. Those things you
can leverage and weigh are RBL's, Reverse DNS, SLS, and User and system
defined header analysis. We are currently blocking about 80% of mail
that is inbound to our organization.

We will be deploying the end user quarantine functionality next week
(when it is available w/ service release 5). Users can then be sent a
single e-mail on a schedule you select and let them see what has been
blocked w/ a URL to release it. Once that is available, We plan on
implementing more strict policies (once I have that safety net).
