The event service is independent of the normal events Exchange will post to
the application event log. The event service is for server side scripting
of exchange triggered by events in certain folders. If you do not use this,
then you do not need it.

We use ViaWest, though recommending them would be a stretch.
The queuing up of SMTP email (with a low priority MX record), is a
requirement for even being considered as an ISP around here.
