Check IIS settings for both the Default Website and the OWA virtual directory. May need to change the Require Secure Channel setting under Secure Communications. We had to set our Default Website to OFF and then OWA to ON to get the redirection to work.

My installation is similar to yours. Exchange 5.5 on NT 4.0 on one box OWA on NT 4.0 on another box Enable the http protocol on the Exchange server, set up OWA in IIS on the OWA box, set the default webpage. Both boxes are SP6a. I haven't seen any good whitepapers on doing this.
