ps be careful this user is aware that someone has access to all their
files, and make sure the script.sh is only -rws--S--- if world has rwx
they basically have the other-user account if there is a mistake in your
scripts

Not exactly a fix, but can't you upgrade from 8.1 to 8.2 instead of
doing a fresh install?
Consider also trying the floppy images, like the "other" or copying the
CD to a iso file, mounting it using loopback and installing from there.

server installed. Both ftpaccess files are identical. I can ftp from boxa
to boxb with ncftp or mc or even gftp, giving my userid and passw.

I have 1 ATAPI-DVD as reader and 1 ATAPI CD/RW as writer. Both work
