In that case, still shooting blind (more or less) i would suggest the following:
1. Perhaps there is no Makefile b/c Jamie didn't run a configure script?
2. How to clean up from an old installation? Well you (Jamie) could do a "make clean"
etc but

Any time you install a server you should compile the packages yourself, that way
you're not
stuck with the options someone else picked for you, pick up any book on MySQL or PHP
and
those books will tell you the same thing.
